follows those affected by a racially charged trial after the home-invasion

60-SECOND INTERVIEW
Ten seasons into playing forensic
anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan
on Bones (returning to FOX March 26),
Emily Deschanel, 38, will once again be
pregnant in both her real life and her
reel life.
How do you juggle the demands of working and
raising a 4-year-old son? You constantly feel pulled
in both directions, so it’s very difficult. I don’t have
a good answer for it. I don’t balance it very well.
It gets better as Henry, my son, gets older, but I
struggle with it every day.
And now you have a second one on the way. It must
be a relief that your character is also pregnant. I’m
so glad. I don’t want to be worried about hiding a
baby bump. We didn’t try to hide it last time, thank
God. It’s just easier this way.
Bones sent Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan
out of the lab for some fun episodes. What would
you want to do next if
you could pick? Now
that I’m pregnant,
I don’t want to do
them, but I like any
kind of acrobatics.
I liked the circus
episode, and we did

Season 11, we will go and be acrobats.
Putting a couple together often signals the decline
of a show. Why do you think that didn’t happen on
Bones when Booth and Brennan got together?
I think we have really clever writers who didn’t
make it about dating. All of a sudden, we were
raising a family together. Also, they have always
been great about changing the dynamic between
the characters, and that keeps the show interesting.

Eat breakfast to start your metabolism soaring, and keep it going all
day with these four foods.
Bean booster. Highly versatile
in the kitchen, beans are also
full of fiber and resistant starch,
which has been associated with
increased fat metabolism and
decreased fat storage. Also, the
fiber in beans is tough to digest, so
the body has to work harder to get
the job done.
Now that your seeds are sprouting and breaking through the soil, you can’t tell the difference
between the cucumber plants and squash plants. These ideas for five creative plant markers
from some of our favorite bloggers will help you keep things straight—at little cost.
➊ CORK IT. Write the plant name in permanent ink on a bottle cork. Drill a hole in the center of the cork. Stick a wooden
skewer into hole. Then poke the skewer into the soil.—Rachel Hollis, thechicsite.com
➋ CLIP IT. Use a permanent marker to write the plant name on the flat side of a wooden clothespin. Clip the pin to a dowel
or straight stick.—Becky Striepe, glueandglitter.com
➌ ROCK IT. With acrylic paint and a small paint brush, write the plant name on a smooth river rock.—Kristin Sellars,
lubirdbaby.com
➍ STICK IT. Spray a wooden paint stir stick with a
solid color. Then using a broad-tipped permanent marker,
print the plant name on the stick. Spray lightly with
varnish.—Susan Whetzel, doughmesstic.com
➎ FLAG IT. Fold a 4-inch strip of patterned duct tape
or washi tape (similar to masking tape) around the top
of a wooden skewer or thin dowel so that the sticky sides
meet. Cut a small V shape into the end of the tape to make
a pennant. Use a permanent marker to write the plant
name on the tape.—Jamey Ekins, dabblesandbabbles.com

Pepper power. Have you ever
started sweating while eating
something really spicy? That’s
the temporary metabolism boost
produced by capsaicin, a chemical
found in foods such as peppers.
Capsaicin has been shown to
increase heat production, which
boosts metabolism immediately
after you eat.
Shellfish’s strength. Muscle burns
more calories at rest than fat, and
for muscles to work their best they
need oxygen. Iron carries oxygen
to your cells, and shellfish is a fabulous source of that nutrient.

STAYCATION IDEAS FOR
SPRING BREAK
So a week at Disneyland just isn’t in the cards? You don’t have to hop a plane
(or spend a bundle) to have a fun-filled spring break with your family. Here
are simple ways to give the kids an invigorating week off—even when you
have to clock in at the office.
TRY A MINICAMP. Many museums, art
studios, parks and sports programs arrange
minicamps during breaks. Check with your
local YMCA, too. Bonus: These camps often
include an after-care option for parents
working full time.
ARRANGE A NANNY SHARE. It’s the playdate
win for everyone. Several parents split the cost
of a sitter (or two) who watches all the kids
at once. “This works really well during spring
break because there are high school students
who are also out of school and can bring a
‘bestie’ along to play with the kids,” says Jen
Wallwork-Dominguez, who blogs about life
with her five kids at lifeinthecircus.com.
TAKE A DAY TRIP.
A destination that’s two
hours or less away and
has plenty of kid-friendly
activities is perfect, says
Wallwork-Dominguez.
Check your state tourism
website for ideas. Make a
full day of it, and “by the
time you get home, your
kids are sleeping in the
car and can be transferred
right to bed.”
DO A CHILDCARE SWAP. You stay home with
your kids and a friends’ kids one day; the
friend reciprocates the next day. A whole
week can be covered this way, with each
parent losing only one day of work. When it’s
your turn to watch the kids, take them to a museum or other learning center
to keep them active. Check local listings for free activities, such as library
puppet shows, or hit the park.
HAVE A SLUMBER PARTY DAY. “Stay in your jammies all day, build living-room
forts and watch favorite movies,” suggests Jessica Turner, author of The Fringe
Hours: Making Time for You and founder of themomcreative.com.

insufficiency can get worse and may cause death.
Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency include:
• feeling tired (fatigue) • nausea and vomiting
• lack of energy
• low blood pressure
• weakness
• changes in laboratory blood values (sugar, potassium)
• weakened immune system and increased chance of getting infections
(immunosuppression)
• bone thinning or weakness (osteoporosis)
• eye problems including glaucoma and cataracts. You should have regular eye
exams while using BREO ELLIPTA.
Common side effects of BREO ELLIPTA include:
• runny nose and sore throat
• upper respiratory tract infection
• headache
• thrush in the mouth and/or throat. Rinse your mouth without swallowing after use
to help prevent this.
Tell your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or that does not
go away.
These are not all the side effects with BREO ELLIPTA. Ask your healthcare provider

Sweet treats. Shop your local dollar store for practical items you already plan to
buy for your kids in the next few months. Books, sidewalk chalk, hair accessories,
fun toothbrushes, colorful socks and crafting supplies all can be tucked into a basket.
DIY coupon books. Type (or handwrite), cut and staple together a stack of colorful
papers or cards offering perks such as “Free pass on taking out the trash” or “One
night of staying up past bedtime.” Holly Cressall, a blogger on bitsofeverything.com
says, “My kids love getting to use these extra privileges instead of more candy.”
Candy alternative. Make your child’s favorite cookies or brownies and package
them in small plastic containers or cellophane treat bags with ribbons. Kids can take
the treats in their school lunch bag each day of the upcoming week.
Reuse. Invest in a nice basket for your child’s first Easter, then recycle it year after
year. Bonus: There’s no confusion (or sibling conflict) over whose basket is whose,
says Tina Pearson, mom of four, who blogs at mamaslikeme.com. Shop thrift stores
or garage sales for inexpensive baskets.

on’t let your Easter ham go to waste. Chop it and use it in
our easy stromboli—an Italian favorite that’s like a pizza
folded in half. Plus, our Green Olive and Egg Salad is an
easy way to use leftover boiled eggs that you’ve dyed with
the kids. It’s a new take on a traditional recipe—using green olives
instead of celery to add a salty bit of tanginess.
GREEN OLIVE
AND EGG SALAD
4 hard-cooked eggs,
chopped
6 large unstuffed green
olives
2 to 3 Tbsp mayonnaise
½ tsp Dijon mustard
1. Combine all ingredients in
a small bowl. Stir gently. Serve as a sandwich filling or in lettuce cups.
Serves 2.
Recipe from Patricia Hogan, Rochester, N.Y.
HAM STROMBOLI
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, sliced into
thin strips
1 green bell pepper, sliced into
thin strips
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 Tbsp dried Italian seasoning
1 lb frozen pizza dough, thawed
1½ cups shredded mozzarella
cheese
1½ cups chopped cooked ham
1 egg, beaten with 1 Tbsp water
Italian pizza sauce
1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell
pepper and cook until beginning to soften, 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic,
salt, pepper and Italian seasoning. Cook 1 minute, then transfer to a
plate to cool.
4. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese down the middle of dough.
Place ham on top of cheese. Spread onion and pepper over ham, then
add remaining mozzarella.
5. Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut 1½-inch-wide strips into the
dough on either side of the filling. Be sure to not cut all the way to
the filling, leaving a little dough so the filling won’t drip out. Pull strips
from each side, crisscrossing them decoratively over the filling and
leaving small slits for air vents between them. When you get to the
ends, fold up the end flaps, then cross the last strips over to seal. If you
don’t want to do a “braid,” you can just fold the sides over tightly, seal
them together, then cut smalls slits across the top, about 1½ inches
apart.
6. Brush the egg and water mixture over the top and sides of the bread.
7. Bake 40 to 45 minutes, tenting with foil if the top gets too brown.
Serve with pizza sauce for dipping. Serves 6.

EASTER BUCKETS
Who says an Easter basket should be filled only with eggs and candy? Or that a
basket needs to be a basket? We love this metal paint can decorated in festive stripes. To make it, start with a clean, unused paint can from the home
improvement store. Using masking tape or painter’s tape, cover the portions of
the can you want to remain silver. Then spray the rest with an enamel paint of
your choice. Let dry completely, then remove the tape.
Since paint cans are deep, we filled our first with crushed tissue
paper, then piled in paper Easter grass. We loaded in mini baked
snack crackers (in carrot bags), pinwheels, watercolor paints,
artist brushes and small toys along with traditional chocolate cream eggs.

Place white chocolate in a microwave-safe

melt. Stir until completely melted. Pour onto a
parchment-lined baking sheet. Scatter pastel
M&M’s and colorful candy sprinkles on top. Let
cool until firm, then break into pieces.

7 RABBITS, BUNNIES SIGNS
Chances are your egg-hunting crew includes kids
of all ages. Give little ones a fair shake by directing them to an area where eggs are in plain sight.
Send older kids to hunt for eggs you’ve hidden
more cleverly. Make signs with painted yardsticks
and foam board to point the way.

KOOL COLORS
Kool-Aid makes a vibrant dye for eggs. Hard
boil eggs and let dry completely. In plastic
cups, combine 2 packages of Kool-Aid
with 1½ cups water. Stir to dissolve
the powder. Place the eggs in the
cups and let stand until the
shells are as dark as you like.
9 EGGS OF A
DIFFERENT COLOR
Skip the dye for these bold eggs.
Cut dots and stripes from colorful paper napkins, using a large
hole punch and scissors. Mix
equal parts white glue (such as
Elmer’s) and water. Use a paint
brush to spread it on one side
of the paper cut-outs and press
them onto hard-boiled eggs.
