How do you juggle the demands of working and raising a 4-year-old son? You constantly feel pulled in both directions, so it’s very difficult. I don’t have a good answer for it. I don’t balance it very well. It gets better as Henry, my son, gets older, but I struggle with it every day. And now you have a second one on the way. It must be a relief that your character is also pregnant. I’m so glad. I don’t want to be worried about hiding a baby bump. We didn’t try to hide it last time, thank God. It’s just easier this way. Bones sent Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan out of the lab for some fun episodes. What would you want to do next if you could pick? Now that I’m pregnant, I don’t want to do them, but I like any kind of acrobatics. I liked the circus episode, and we did an episode where I got to be weightless and we were in a Booth (David Boreanaz) and harness and flipping Brennan (Emily Deschanel) marry in Season 9 of Bones. around. If we do Season 11, we will go and be acrobats. Putting a couple together often signals the decline of a show. Why do you think that didn’t happen on Bones when Booth and Brennan got together? I think we have really clever writers who didn’t make it about dating. All of a sudden, we were raising a family together. Also, they have always been great about changing the dynamic between the characters, and that keeps the show interesting. Eat breakfast to start your metabolism soaring, and keep it going all day with these four foods. Bean booster. Highly versatile in the kitchen, beans are also full of fiber and resistant starch, which has been associated with increased fat metabolism and decreased fat storage. Also, the fiber in beans is tough to digest, so the body has to work harder to get the job done. Now that your seeds are sprouting and breaking through the soil, you can’t tell the difference between the cucumber plants and squash plants. These ideas for five creative plant markers from some of our favorite bloggers will help you keep things straight—at little cost. ➊ CORK IT. Write the plant name in permanent ink on a bottle cork. Drill a hole in the center of the cork. Stick a wooden skewer into hole. Then poke the skewer into the soil.—Rachel Hollis, thechicsite.com ➋ CLIP IT. Use a permanent marker to write the plant name on the flat side of a wooden clothespin. Clip the pin to a dowel or straight stick.—Becky Striepe, glueandglitter.com ➌ ROCK IT. With acrylic paint and a small paint brush, write the plant name on a smooth river rock.—Kristin Sellars, lubirdbaby.com ➍ STICK IT. Spray a wooden paint stir stick with a solid color. Then using a broad-tipped permanent marker, print the plant name on the stick. Spray lightly with varnish.—Susan Whetzel, doughmesstic.com ➎ FLAG IT. Fold a 4-inch strip of patterned duct tape or washi tape (similar to masking tape) around the top of a wooden skewer or thin dowel so that the sticky sides meet. Cut a small V shape into the end of the tape to make a pennant. BRE309R0 October 2014 STAYCATION IDEAS FOR SPRING BREAK So a week at Disneyland just isn’t in the cards? You don’t have to hop a plane (or spend a bundle) to have a fun-filled spring break with your family. Here are simple ways to give the kids an invigorating week off—even when you have to clock in at the office. TRY A MINICAMP. Many museums, art studios, parks and sports programs arrange minicamps during breaks. Check with your local YMCA, too. Bonus: These camps often include an after-care option for parents working full time. ARRANGE A NANNY SHARE. It’s the playdate win for everyone. Several parents split the cost of a sitter (or two) who watches all the kids at once. “This works really well during spring break because there are high school students who are also out of school and can bring a ‘bestie’ along to play with the kids,” says Jen Wallwork-Dominguez, who blogs about life with her five kids at lifeinthecircus.com. TAKE A DAY TRIP. A destination that’s two hours or less away and has plenty of kid-friendly activities is perfect, says Wallwork-Dominguez. Check your state tourism website for ideas. Make a full day of it, and “by the time you get home, your kids are sleeping in the car and can be transferred right to bed.” DO A CHILDCARE SWAP. You stay home with your kids and a friends’ kids one day; the friend reciprocates the next day. A whole week can be covered this way, with each parent losing only one day of work. When it’s your turn to watch the kids, take them to a museum or other learning center to keep them active. Check local listings for free activities, such as library puppet shows, or hit the park. HAVE A SLUMBER PARTY DAY. “Stay in your jammies all day, build living-room forts and watch favorite movies,” suggests Jessica Turner, author of The Fringe Hours: Making Time for You and founder of themomcreative.com. Chop it and use it in our easy stromboli—an Italian favorite that’s like a pizza folded in half. Plus, our Green Olive and Egg Salad is an easy way to use leftover boiled eggs that you’ve dyed with the kids. It’s a new take on a traditional recipe—using green olives instead of celery to add a salty bit of tanginess. GREEN OLIVE AND EGG SALAD 4 hard-cooked eggs, chopped 6 large unstuffed green olives 2 to 3 Tbsp mayonnaise ½ tsp Dijon mustard 1. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Stir gently. Serve as a sandwich filling or in lettuce cups. Serves 2. Recipe from Patricia Hogan, Rochester, N.Y. HAM STROMBOLI 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 medium onion, sliced into thin strips 1 green bell pepper, sliced into thin strips 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 Tbsp dried Italian seasoning 1 lb frozen pizza dough, thawed 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese 1½ cups chopped cooked ham 1 egg, beaten with 1 Tbsp water Italian pizza sauce 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. 2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper and cook until beginning to soften, 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic, salt, pepper and Italian seasoning. Cook 1 minute, then transfer to a plate to cool. 4. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese down the middle of dough. Place ham on top of cheese. Spread onion and pepper over ham, then add remaining mozzarella. 5. Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut 1½-inch-wide strips into the dough on either side of the filling. Be sure to not cut all the way to the filling, leaving a little dough so the filling won’t drip out. Pull strips from each side, crisscrossing them decoratively over the filling and leaving small slits for air vents between them. When you get to the ends, fold up the end flaps, then cross the last strips over to seal. If you don’t want to do a “braid,” you can just fold the sides over tightly, seal them together, then cut smalls slits across the top, about 1½ inches apart. 6. Brush the egg and water mixture over the top and sides of the bread. 7. Bake 40 to 45 minutes, tenting with foil if the top gets too brown. Serve with pizza sauce for dipping. Serves 6.
