 First 5 Association of California Job Announcement Policy Director (full-­‐time) About the Organization: The First 5 Association of California is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Policy Director, supporting the policy and advocacy efforts of the Association, coordinating with related efforts of the 58 county commissions, and inspiring key partners to work with the Association on matters of shared purpose. Position Overview: The Policy Director supports the Association and its members in public policy education and advocacy, legislative analysis and outreach, and strategic communications. The position requires the employee to be present in Sacramento approximately half-­‐time. The Policy Director works with the Association leadership on policy priorities and manages the day-­‐to-­‐day implementation of the Association’s policy agenda including reaching out to policymakers and advocacy partners on an on-­‐going basis as well as ensuring that the policy agenda draws from and extends the work of the First 5 commissions. The Policy Director will: § Work with the Executive Director and Association leadership to develop legislative and policy strategies that support the goals of the First 5 Association; § Coordinate and collaborate with policy staff from First 5 commissions, children’s advocacy organizations, foundations, and other strategic partners. This includes working with partner organizations, business champions, public agencies, the media, government officials, and members of the general public; § Monitor and assess the impact of federal and state legislative developments and proposals that affect children 0-­‐5 in California; § Write comment letters, talking points, policy briefs, fact sheets and other documents related to public policy issues; § Staff the Association’s Advocacy Committee, working closely with policy and advocacy staff at the county commissions to ensure collaboration and synergistic efforts; and § Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience, including early education, children’s health and/or family support • Demonstrated experience advocating for public policy change or legislation § Excellent verbal and written communication skills § Exceptional planning and organizational skills, resourcefulness, and creativity § Self-­‐motivation and personal accountability Salary: $65,000 -­‐ $85,000 annually, depending on experience, plus excellent benefits.
