After record-breaking temperatures, we wonder if we will thaw out. I’ve lost track to how many days schools have been cancelled. As I look out at a snow-covered terrain, I wonder when it will warm. Our Deep Roots Community Gardens were scheduled to open March 1, but that has been a challenge. Don’t get me wrong; I love the four seasons and just about the time I get “tired” of a season, it changes. On March 8 we will change to Daylight Savings time or I would rather say, “Spring” forward. I just checked my calendar and you will be relieved to know, Spring is scheduled to begin on March 20. As we progress through March, we will also journey through Lent – forty days of spiritual renewal and preparation for the events of Holy Week. My messages will focus on some of the events of the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life. On Sunday, March 8 we will have Girl Scout Recognition Sunday at 8:45am and celebrate the growing and excellent work being done by and for our three Girl Scout groups. Our Confirmation class continues to meet during Sunday school and prepare for joining our church in May. Please keep this group in your prayers. We are excited about this group and other youth and their families going to Temple Emmanuel in Winston-Salem on the afternoon of March 8 to learn more about the Jewish faith. On Sunday, March 15, our new Yadkin Valley District Superintendent, Dr. Jeff Patterson, will be our guest speaker giving our members an opportunity to get to know him and giving him the privilege of meeting you. That evening area churches will join together for a community Lenten worship service at First Baptist church and I will be the preacher. Please keep us in your prayers as we prepare for these services. A special liturgical dance will enhance our worship services on Sunday, March 22 under the leadership of Terri Butcher. March 29 is Palm Sunday. There will not be a Connection Brunch this day. Our Easter Egg Hunt will be that afternoon at Rich Park. I hope you will continue to be actively involved in service and spiritual growth as our church continues to seek to fulfill the mission and vision set before us. We invite you to join us as we continue to grow the arts in our community by submitting your favorite recipes to be used in keepsake cookbook to be offered for sale later this year. Please email your recipes to our Executive Director, Sidniee Suggs at: [email protected] Your name will be highlighted with each of your recipes and shown in the cookbook's index. Please include a telephone number in case a question needs to be asked about the recipe(s) you send to us. The number of books we produce will also determine the price (which we hope will not be over $15 each.) To help us make that decision we are keeping a list of those who would support this fundraiser by purchasing a copy. If you think you would want one and would like to be contacted once a price is established please include that information within your email to Sidniee. It goes without saying this will be a quality book that can be used for years to come and would make a great Christmas gift. After two days of travel, we held clinics in several small towns--Limon, Plan de Flores, Icoteas and Chipaqua. With 5 doctors, 6 nurses and 2 extremely efficient pharmacy workers, we were blessed to see over 1305 patients and dispense over 4000 prescriptions. We were the first medical team to serve these communities since the last Carolina Honduras Health Foundation team in October last year. In addition we had very fruitful conversations with the doctor and staff at the government clinic in Limon. With one doctor, that clinic serves a population of over 11,700 people. Our goal is to work closely with the government clinic in the future. Also, we shared ideas and information with a PhD student from American University in Washington, D.C. Her work focuses on the impact of short term mission teams in the communities that we serve. All of the members of our team want to thank FUMC Mocksville for the opportunity to be of service in Honduras. We thank you for your support and prayers. In particular, we want to thank Jeff Clarke and Taylor and Kathy Slye for providing the transportation to and from the airport. Also, we want to thank the Missions Committee for its continued support of the medical mission in Honduras including the fundraising fellowship meal in January. Also, we want to thank those who stayed after the fellowship meal to help count pills in preparation for the trip. Our July 2015 team is currently filled. However, we are planning teams for early February and late July 2016. Please contact me ([email protected]) or the church office if you are interested in joining one of our 2016 teams. Whenever you are called, God will equip you to be of service in His name. Check the bookcase in the hall of the Family Life Center for The Dressmaker of Khair Khana by Gayle Lemon. During the Taliban rule in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, the nine “Sidiqi daughters, as all Afghani women, were forced to stay home, not allowed to work and had to wear the full length chadri or burka out of doors. No woman could be seen outside the home without a male, family member as escort. Sad and difficult for women, and bad timing for Kamila Sidiqi who had just received her teaching certificate, one she could not use. Mr. Sidiqi and an elder brother had to flee Kabul for their safety, leaving Kamila and five siblings at home to manage day to day life. Kamila’s older, married sister taught her the basics of sewing, loaned her a machine, and a home business was begun. Not only did it help support the family, it leads Kamila to train other women and become a community activist for women’s causes. This fascinating true story in large print is suitable for teen readers as well as adults. Mary Circle will meet Monday, March 16th at 2 pm in the conference room of the FLC. The guest speaker will be Krystal Dumas, founder of Just Hope Inc which was voted Davie County’s best charity of 2014 by the Davie County Chamber of Commerce.
