1 2 Fishers Island Fog Horn april 2015 News and Information about Fishers Island, NY H. L. F. Museum osprey Update It must be spring! The Ferguson Museum has reinstalled the osprey camera at Middle Farms and the ospreys are on the move north - though taking very different routes. Edwin the Osprey After wintering in Brazil, among the Amazon Rainforest of South America, Edwin’s tracking data was picked up intermittently in mid February - further north along rivers in Colombia and Venezuela. By March 11 he had begun his migration north across the Caribbean, through Haiti and Cuba and returned to the U.S. by way of the Florida Keys. As of March 28 he had reached North Carolina. Follow Edwin's travels by visiting this link: http://fergusonmuseum.org/osprey-cam/track-edwin/ Osprey Cam Awaiting the arrival of an osprey pair, the camera is now live and can be viewed often to see if any activity is happening. http://fergusonmuseum.org/osprey-cam/. Charlie the Osprey Charlie spent his winter among lakes in northwestern Colombia and instead of returning north by way of the Caribbean, he chose a Central American route through Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico. After reaching the Yucatan peninsula, he returned to the U.S. via the Gulf of Mexico to northwestern Florida. It is unknown why he chose this route, but appears to be back on track towards Fishers Island. As of March 28, he had reached Georgia. “What it does tell us in no uncertain terms is that just like humans, all animals are individuals. There is no generic Osprey that migrates the same way every fall or spring. What particular combination of stimuli that led him to go south to go north will remain inscrutable…Normally, I try to get transmitters back from returning birds because we normally won’t learn anything new by having a bird carry a PTT south a second time. Charlie is the exception to this rule. It will be fascinating to follow him through another migration cycle.” ~ Rob Bierregaard, Osprey Expert To get updates on Charlie's travel plans visit this link: http://fergusonmuseum.org/osprey-cam/trackingcharlie/ Lorem Ipsum Fishers Island Fog horn NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING, PROPOSED PROPOSITION, BUDGET VOTE AND ELECTION FISHERS ISLAND UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT TOWN OF SOUTHOLD, SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that a public hearing of the qualified voters of the Fishers Island Union Free School District, Suffolk County, Fishers Island, New York, will be held in the school building in said District on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 6:00 pm. It may still feel cold, but there are tons of chores to do when it is warm enough to work outside. First of all, clean up gardens by removing dead foliage and weeds that are sprouting. And take off any winter mulch, like Christmas tree branches or salt hay, so the soil warms up. In the vegetable garden, I put down black plastic or EPDM Fabric to heat up the soil before planting. Soil needs to be above 60 degrees for seeds to germinate and the black plastic will speed up the process, according to Tom Stearns at High Mowing Organic Seeds. He top dresses his beds with organic fertilizer or compost and then puts down the plastic. Plant cool weather crops first like Peas, Spinach, Lettuce, Beets, Swiss Chard and Sweet Peas. Once the soil is above 60 degrees and there is no more threat of frost you can plant seeds and seedlings. Tomato plants can be started indoors on Tax Day, April 15th and should be transplanted outside after the last frost. I put my plants in “Tomato Teepees” filled with water for the first month in the garden. This protects the young tomato plants from the wind on Fishers Island. The “teepees” can be removed in mid June. You can buy them from Park Seed. In April, I spray a copper fungicide like Bonide on my emerging peonies to prevent Botrytis and then put peony cages around the plants before they get too big. I try to give a second spray of fungicide in mid May. Once the Forsythia blooms, I prune my rose bushes back to green wood and fertilize each plant with one tablespoon of Epsom salts and a cup of organic fertilizer. And do the same in May. Acid loving plants, like Hydrangea, Holly, Rhododendrons, Andromeda and Boxwood can be top dressed with Hollytone, so it can sink in during spring rain. Aluminum Sulfate can also be put down around Hydrangeas to encourage bluer blooms. April is also a good time to prune Boxwood, but prune flowering shrubs like Forsythia, Viburnum, Azalea and Lilac two weeks after they bloom later in the spring. And finally, April is a good time to test your soil to see if it is the correct balance, this is especially important for vegetable gardens. The University of Connecticut has prepaid soil testing collection kits at the New London County Extension Center you can contact them at 860 887-1608, but do it ASAP because if you need to add to your soil, it should be done well before planting time. FI School Brings Home Science Honors The Connecticut Science Fair and Engineering Fair is held at Quinnipiac University in March. A highly competitive and prestigious event, these students have been selected from thousands throughout Connecticut and several bordering New York towns. The young scientists and engineers have participated in school and local fairs and have achieved at a very high level to come to CSEF. Source: CT State Science Fair press release. Each year Fishers Island School’s science department encourages the 11th and 12th grade science students to participate in the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair. These students work on their projects starting at the beginning of school each year – or before if they are ambitious – and submit their projects before Christmas break. Mentored by Fishers Island School science teacher Mrs. Giles and technology teacher Mr. Kaplan, the students have unlimited boundaries as long as the project is in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) field. Most of them are pretty amazing and intriguing! The projects that contain materials such as hazardous chemicals or devices and human subjects have to be preapproved for safety by a SRC scientific review committee that was composed of Dr. Ingram, Dr. Dollar, Mrs. Goodwin, and Mr. Matzdorff. Mrs. Giles, Mr. Kaplan and the students themselves then select the top 8 projects to represent the Fishers Island School at CSEF. These included Shelby Lusker, Eli Kane, Aaron Kane, Mackenzie Switz, Connor Beverly, Gabrielle Krysiewicz, Elizabeth McCarthy and Sophie Streimer. This year, 50% of the participating Fishers Island School students – Shelby Lusker, Eli Kane, Aaron Kane and Mackenzie Switz – received Second Honors ranking them in the top 40-80 percentile of the fair participants. Looking at the season’s stats, it is easy to recognize the players reliance on each other. In every game, at least seven girls added to the score; and whether considering rebounds, assists or any other statistic, every girl was credited with some contribution in every game. Out of 23 girls in the Fishers Island high school, 19 are part of the team. With Fishers Island School’s no cut policy for 7th-12th grade student athletes, we relied on determination and contributions from the whole team in order to defeat varsity teams from many schools with populations ranging from 300 students to 600 students. Our successful season is a clear reflection of the comradery and sportsmanship of these girls. In our 2 defeats, we lost an average of only 3 points. After our first lost to O’Brien Tech by one point we kept our heads high, and when the time came to play our rivals once again, we annihilated them 40-27. This year’s flu epidemic took its toll and brought us our second lost to Wheeler. A notable contributing factor of the team was the five senior girls. Captain Shelby Lusker led the team offensively with a season total of 143 points and captain Elizabeth McCarthy pulled down a total of 130 rebounds for the season. The unstoppable center, Hannah Peabody, gave the team valuable points, rebounds, and defense at the high post. Grace Timmons developed a great baseline drive that earned her many trips to the free throw line. Olivia Cyr was quick to bank the corner shot when her team most needed her. Team manager and book keeper, Sophia Streimer, worked behind the scenes to make this whole season possible. Also factoring into the team’s success, was the aggressive defense of starting junior Arrianna Reyes Suarez , and sophomores Molly Cypherd and Emma Cypherd, and eighth grader Bria Fielding who all stepped up as dominant players in many of the games. Caroline Toldo, Lexi Switz, Brooklyn Redo, Ellanora Lerner, Margot Hutchins, Betsy Conger, and Meg Allen continued to develop as players throughout the season and offered some exciting minutes off the bench. Gabby Krysiewicz tallied all of our stats and Julia Helal kept the book for our JV games. As the senior class of 2015 says goodbye to Fishers Island School, they leave behind a legacy as successful student athletes and successful team leaders. They have been positive role models and team mentors, and now pass the torch to the next year’s high school players. The girls will continue to perfect their game skills and grow with dedicated head coach Mrs. Giles and assistant coach Mrs. Eastman.
