It now can wait. President Jeff Doshna On Friday, March 13, our congregation lost a beloved member, Pablo 1st Vice President Mitch Clarin Fraenkel. For those who don’t know, Pablo was a regular at nearly all of our nd 2 Vice President Neal Wolff Shabbat morning, Sunday, and holiday services, and a member of my adult ed 3rd Vice President Mindy Friedman Secretary Laurence Shatkin class. He even came on our all night study sessions on erev Shavuot. He was also Treasurer James Fox the last among our survivors who were in Europe during World War II, and who Immediate Past President Michael Wolf continued to reside in our area and attend our shul. While he did not endure the Elected Trustees: Lifetime Trustees: horrors of the camps, he was a “fugitive” from the Nazis for 20 months, and it was Jenn Fine Bill Blaher a combination of luck, intelligence, adaptability, and courage that enabled him to Richard Frank Jack Forman survive. Every year at the end of our Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Commemoration) Zel Gerstein Dan Gross service would end with his doing a reading, recited with passion in his Dutch Judy Gold Ed Mehrlust Steven Greenstein Howard Nifoussi accent. It was for me and, I believe for many others in attendance, our last living Alan Hylton Phil Stern link to the events, to the history of the Holocaust. Marvin Jacobson Larry Wissner I know that I have written similar messages before, but this one is different in Stuart Kippelman Michael Wolf that he was, as I mentioned, the last of our survivors. We in Flemington have now Melissa Kleiman Ruth Wolf Marta Klepner reached that point in post Holocaust history where everyone connected to the Bruce Moskovitz Sisterhood President: tragedy will be second or third generation. We will not have the sense of Jonathan Nemeth Reena Gold Kamins immediacy that others and I have felt through the years. I can tell you that our Sharon Rednor group of survivors were remarkable people who influenced other members and Sandy Siegel Bulletin Editor: me in many ways. They had stories to tell that are far beyond what most of us Jonathan Weitz Flo Newrock growing up here could imagine. On April 19 th, at 10:00 AM, the FJCC will hold its annual Yom HaShoah service. Professor Valerie Thaler will be our speaker, and her topic is “How Americans Remember the Holocaust.” I urge you to attend. The voices of our survivors have been stilled, but they and the Holocaust must not be forgotten. Executive Board: April 2015 / Nissan 5775 A few years ago, in an effort to save on printing and postage, as well being a bit more ‘green’, the Board decided that we would no longer send a physical copy of this bulletin to the entire membership. We’d print a few copies for folks to pick up at the FJCC, and mail out to those who requested it. We all assumed that having a digital version of the bulletin, along with weekly emails, would be sufficient to keep the congregation informed as to what was going on in our synagogue. It turns out that we were wrong. So starting this month, we are resuming mailing out the bulletin. We hope that you will appreciate some of the design changes that have been made. More importantly, we hope that people will take the time to read it, see all of the events and programs at the FJCC, and increase your participation in our synagogue. The beloved classic was last staged several years ago and audiences had eagerly anticipated its reappearance on the Hunterdon scene. The new adaptation commenced at the synagogue with a magnificent cocktail hour from producers Gil Rosen, Kim Muller, and Kimi Mittler. Upon arrival, guests were treated to a succulent display of appetizers and the trio received universal accolades for their delicious hors d’oeuvres and innovative set design. Complementing the festive mood, Andrea Maranca, proprietor of Tewksbury Wine & Spirits, made a very generous donation of kosher wines to the event. The addition of a wonderful multi-sensory Havdalah service — choreographed by Rabbi Evan Jaffe and featuring guitar accompaniment by Mitch Clarin — made this new production especially delightful. The second act began dramatically with the distribution of host home assignments. Marsha Gerstein, who has cochaired the event in the past, beautifully organized this segment of the production, and her stylish attention to detail was evident. Participants were given colorful envelopes with the assignments and directions, and joyfully scurried off to their awaiting hosts. Lively conversation ensued throughout the entrée course, which was hosted by a hugely talented culinary ensemble: Robin & Jeff Alexander, Donna & Ricky Braff, Andrea Goldstein & Scott Byne, Lois & Dan Gross, Sari & Michael Kawas, Adah & Alan Radzin, and Sharon Zimmerman & Jeff Doshna. Kosher, kosher-vegetarian and kosher-style meals were enjoyed by all. In the concluding scene, guests arrived to a show stopping presentation of cakes, tarts, cookies and beverages, and the welcoming atmosphere was enhanced by the piano melodies of Richard Rubin. Satisfied hums of “Mmmm, yummy…” were overheard at the beautiful home of Anneliese and Howard Nifoussi, aka The Dessert House. “The original objective of creating a social event that would bring the congregation together has been met, but this is way beyond our wildest dreams,” said one Sisterhood executive board member who declined to be identified for this article. Co-chairs Leah Greenstein and Barbara Clarin agreed that the event had exceeded their expectations given a worryingly slow start at the box office. Along with Sisterhood’s president, Reena Kamins, they expressed their gratitude to all those who attended the event and praised a talented troupe of volunteers, hosts, advisors, and helpers. Judging by the positive reviews, the event will surely spawn a sequel. Look for “Son of the Return of the Progressive Dinner” in mid-5776 or early 2016, whichever comes first. 4 5 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Fellow Congregants: In November and December, the congregation voted on whether the Board of Trustees should enter into contract negotiations with Rabbi Evan Jaffe on a new contract. The vote was overwhelming (156-1), and so the Executive Board began work with the Rabbi in January. We agreed to terms quickly, and the Board approved the contract at our February meeting. I am happy to report that Rabbi Evan Jaffe will be at the Flemington Jewish Community Center through August 2019. This will, however, be the last contract between Rabbi Jaffe and the FJCC. He has announced his intention to retire at that time. In our congregation’s 90+ year history, most of the rabbis haven’t lasted very long. When he retires, Rabbi Jaffe will have been the FJCC’s spiritual leader for one third of its existence. As someone who has had the honor and privilege to know Evan Jaffe for these past 19 years, I can’t imagine our synagogue without him at the helm. From births to Tot Shabbat, from Nursery School to Hebrew School, from Bar Mitzvah to visiting collegian, from weddings to funerals, and everything in between, there is no aspect of our synagogue that has not been fundamentally transformed by his leadership. To say that he will be missed is perhaps the understatement of the century. It may seem that August 2019 is way off in the future. But our congregation will have to start, in the months ahead, to begin to envision what we want our synagogue to look like in the years to come. Some of these conversations will happen around the Kiddush table, or while waiting on Sunday morning to pick up kids from Hebrew School. A more formal process will get under way in 2016, where everyone in our congregation will need to come together and articulate our vision for the future. Well before we can form a rabbinic search committee, the congregation has to know what we’re searching for. Because we know that no one will ever be like Evan Jaffe. In the months ahead, I will use my column to explore some of these big ideas – about where we are as a synagogue, and where we’d like to go. My goal will be to kick start the conversation, and let the congregation figure out the answers together. From my family to yours, Chag v’Kasher Sameach. I hope that everyone enjoys a zissen Pesach. Jeffrey Doshna ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ HEBREW SCHOOL NEWS It seemed like we had Hebrew School in March! Less snow and more class time gave us the opportunity to celebrate Purim and plan for Passover. This year we offered a Purim dinner before the Megillah reading. The program was well attended and I have already added it to next year’s calendar. The last few weeks of the month I heard the children reciting The Four Questions and other Passover songs. The Gimel – Bar/Bat Mitzvah Class Model Seder and the Gan –Bet Family Model Seder is just around the corner. By the time you read this the Hay Class will have lead service, while the Gimel and Dalet classes prepare for their service on April 24 th. Hebrew School families are invited to a Shabbat dinner. Please rsvp to reserve your spot. Karen Walsh Gift Shop Our Gift Shop is all ready for your Passover needs. We have beautiful Seder plates, matzah plates, afikomen covers, Elijah’s cups, haggadot, Lucite Seder Plate liners, and lots of afikomen gifts for children. New sports t-shirts are in from Jerusalem.
