If you feel that you have been a victim of either, start by calling the Floyd Memorial abuse hotline at (812) 948-6742. A nurse can answer your questions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1 or come to the Emergency Department at Floyd Memorial Hospital. About the exam When to contact us When you come to the Emergency Department at Floyd Memorial, you will be seen by one of our emergency doctors. We see girls, boys and adults of all ages at no cost. A trained nurse will then do an exam in a safe and private exam room. Evidence may be collected at this time. If the crime is of a sexual nature and it has occurred within the last 96 hours (or four days), a sexual assault evidence collection kit will be used. If the child has not reached puberty, we do a visual, non-invasive exam. Please call immediately if: •You have been physically or sexually abused, particularly if the sexual abuse has happened within the last four days (or 96 hours) •You notice bleeding, bruising, vaginal discharge or have pain in your private area During the medical/sexual assault exam, the nurse will look for: •Possible injury •Evidence collection •Signs of sexually transmitted diseases •Information to give to police Where do you turn? Adults and children of all races, ethnicities and languages can turn to us for help with physical or sexual abuse. We will do a free and private exam in a safe and comfortable exam room. Everything is private, and no one will know that you are here. Who will help you? Our team is made up of specially trained doctors, nurses, police, support people within the hospital and other outside community agencies and counseling services. If the assault happened within more than 96 hours, information is collected and photos are taken only if you allow it. Many times, the exam may not show that you are injured if the abuse has been happening for a while. Even though there may be no sign of abuse or injury, we can still help. Also, it is important to understand that an exam cannot tell if a girl is sexually active after puberty or how many times sexual contact was made. Following the exam, there are many people available to help you including crisis relief, law enforcement and someone from the prosecuter’s office. Adults 18 and over are not required to report abuse to law enforcement. If you have been sexually abused, do not shower, douche, eat, drink, change your clothes or brush your teeth before coming to the Emergency Department. Sexual abuse isn’t just rape or penetration, it can also be touching or fondling. Appointments can be scheduled for: •Children who told a parent or support person that sexual abuse has occurred more than 96 hours prior, regardless of symptoms •Child Protective Service consults •Pediatrician consults No one deserves to be physically or sexually abused.
