Burlington area, served as a high school and elementary school band
director for 25 years in Waterford, Burlington and Kenosha. She is
currently the Assistant Conductor of the Burlington Kiwanis Civic

the UW-Whitewater annual Summer Flute Camp. She has also judged
flute events at a number of state and district solo and ensemble
festivals. Ms. Stevens has been active as a flute clinician and guest conductor and has
conducted the National High School Flute Choir at the National Flute Association
Convention and conducted a flute choir reading session in Florida. Ms. Stevens has
performed as a flutist with the Kenosha, Racine and Beloit/Janesville Symphony
Orchestras, as well as the Kenosha Pops Concert Band and Holton-Elkhorn Band. She has
also performed twice at the National Flute Association Annual Conference.

M ARGARET KOPREK , FLUTE
2015 Flute Chorale Concerto Competition Winner Margaret Koprek is
the first musician in her family and has been playing flute for 3 ½
years. She is an eighth grader at Kennedy Middle School in
Germantown, where she is a member of the concert band. Margaret
greatly enjoyed participating in the 2014 UW-Milwaukee Middle
School Honors Band, earning first chair; she has also been nominated
to audition for the State Middle School Honors Band. She had the
opportunity to learn about a different style of music as a member of the New Orleans
Jazz Stompers at MYSO this past summer, which she really enjoyed. Margaret attributes
much of her musical growth to her private lesson teacher, Carol Meves. She has recently
begun taking piano lessons and is trying her hand at writing music. Outside of music,
Margaret enjoys playing soccer and skiing – and she values time spent with her family.

Nicolas Quero, 14, has been playing the flute for three years. He
started taking flute lessons in his school band program in fifth grade,
but took a year off to explore other instruments. He pursued the flute
once again a year later and began lessons with Lauren Moldenhauer.
In 2014, Nick was accepted to the Interlochen Arts Camp
Intermediate Wind Ensemble. The music camp was an extremely
rewarding experience which solidified his decision to continue
playing the flute. Nicolas has been accepted into the Interlochen Arts Academy boarding
high school as a freshman for the fall of 2015. Nicolas joined MYSO in the fall of 2014, and
is a member of the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Flute Ensemble. He is looking forward
to returning to the Interlochen Arts Camp this summer as a participant in the
Intermediate Wind Ensemble and Intermediate Symphony Orchestra.

Carter Simmons is the first artistic director appointed by Milwaukee
Youth Symphony Orchestra during its long and successful history.
Named Distinguished Citizen-Professional in the Arts by the Civic
Music Association, Mr. Simmons was honored by the Milwaukee
Symphony Orchestra for “distinguished contributions to music
education in Wisconsin.” During his association with Milwaukee Youth
Symphony Orchestra (MYSO), the organization has grown to serve
more than 1,000 young musicians, rising to national prominence and
receiving numerous awards for excellence.
Mr. Simmons is Music Director of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and Chamber
Orchestra. His programming for both is guided by the confidence that MYSO musicians
rise to challenges and that each musician should experience the finest composers’ work
and the highest form of music making. With MYSO, he has conducted concerts regionally,
across China, in Beijing’s Forbidden City and in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall. He has
accompanied the orchestra for its performances in New York’s Carnegie Hall, Valencia’s
Palau de la Musica and Vienna’s Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic, where
the orchestra will return this summer.
Mr. Simmons’ training includes participation at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, the
Eastern Music Festival, and lessons at the Tanglewood Music Center. A finalist of the
National Conducting Institute of the National Symphony Orchestra under then Music
Director Leonard Slatkin, he also participated in seminars of the League of American
Orchestras conducting the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and masterclasses conducting
Eastman’s Wind Ensemble. His degrees are in horn and vocal performance from the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro and conducting from the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was the first undergraduate to conduct the renowned UNCG
Wind Ensemble before moving to Milwaukee where he was Assistant Conductor of the
UWM Youth Wind Ensemble. He is indebted to his teachers Dr. John Locke, Robert Gutter,
Larry Rachleff, and Thomas L. Dvorak while attending classes of Elizabeth A. H. Green,
John Downey, Leon Fleischer, Gustav Meier and Frederick Fennell, among others.
An active conductor, Mr. Simmons has been invited to work with many of the region’s
orchestras including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Starry Nights Orchestra
featuring artists of Milwaukee’s Florentine Opera, and most recently, the Wisconsin
Philharmonic.

Jeremy Reutebuch, 15, began his musical journey at age two with the
violin and then moved from the violin to the trumpet and cello. He
discovered his true love, percussion, at age 8, when he met his first
drum set. Jeremy is celebrating his sixth year of studies with Professor
Tobie Wilkinson from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and his
fourth year with MYSO. Jeremy enjoys and performs in jazz/orchestral
percussion. As of late, he has been studying composition and spends
much of his free time composing. He was honored to be selected for the John Downey
Creation Project, which has continued to feed his composition interests. Jeremy has
performed for university organizations, senior centers, civic groups, banquets, and has
recorded with American folk artist Kaia Fowler. He will be traveling to Europe (Vienna and
Budapest) this summer to perform with MYSO’s Senior Symphony. At home on the stage,
Jeremy’s greatest joy comes from performing for friends and family.
“Mountain Winds” was inspired by the chilling yet beautiful starry nights in the Rocky
Mountains. The initial idea for the piece came to Jeremy while backpacking in Colorado
with his father. It uses pure orchestral sounds to paint for the listener a picture of the
shooting stars in the freezing night breeze. This fragile and gorgeous piece layered with
brass, woodwind, and percussion also features piano and harp. Please enjoy “Mountain
Winds.”

Daniel Kim is a sophomore at Homestead High School, and has been
a member of MYSO since 2012. He has participated in MYSO’s
Davidson Chamber Ensemble Program for the last two years. Daniel
began his violin studies at age four with Young-Ok Choi, Jin-Won Lee,
and Darcy Drexler. Now he studies violin with Prof. Jun Kim of the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In addition to violin, Daniel
studied clarinet with Sungil Jang while an elementary school student.
Daniel’s musical inspiration comes from his father, who enjoys singing as a tenor and a
leader in a choir at the family’s Catholic church. From his early childhood, Daniel often
traveled to famous composer’s birth places in Europe with his parents. One of the most
unforgettable trips was a music festival at Salzburg, Austria, when he was eleven years
old.
Before becoming a member of MYSO, Daniel was a concertmaster of the Nowon Youth
Chamber Orchestra in South Korea. He played a Haydn violin concerto as a soloist with
this orchestra at age eleven. After becoming a MYSO member, he demonstrated great
musical achievement. He was a winner of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s “Bach
Double” Violin Competition in 2013, and performed the first movement of the Bach
Double Violin Concerto with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He was a runner-up in
Philharmonia’s 2014 Concerto Competition, and, in 2014, received an Honorable Mention
in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Auditions. Daniel was selected for
and participated in the WSMA High School State Honors Orchestra in 2014 and has been
named a WSMA Exemplary Violin Soloist since the eighth grade.
In his free time, Daniel loves to listen to classical music as well as play tennis. He attends
Taekwondo class twice a week, and his current goal is to take the test for Black Belt this
summer.

Lucas Sem, a junior at New Berlin Eisenhower High School, has been
playing the drums for three years, studying with Mike Hernke, and
briefly with Dean Borghesani. He is also a self-taught guitarist. He
started with the violin at age five with Colleen Fitzgerald and for a
short time, played the trombone and trumpet. Lucas is a member of
Senior Symphony, and also participates in MYSO’s Jazz Studies
program and UJAY at UW-Milwaukee. He is actively involved in his
school jazz, concert, and marching band programs. Lucas has only recently started
composing, this being his first large work, composed with the help of Christian
Ellenwood. He finds soundtrack music to be an interesting genre of music, being a
combination of classical, electronic, and rock music, and has taken many of the ideas
used by prominent composers of that genre, such as Thomas Bergersen, in his piece.

Carlos Meyers is a freshman currently attending Rufus King
International High School. He has played the French horn for four
years and is in his second year with MYSO as a member of
Philharmonia. In addition to the horn, Carlos plays the piano, trumpet
and trombone. Through the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Nancy
Cline has helped Carlos learn the intricacies of playing the horn.
Carlos is a budding composer and conductor, and hopes to pursue
those two subjects through college and as a career. He enjoys all forms of the performing
arts, including acting, and recently performed in “A Christmas Carol” with the Milwaukee
Repertory Theater for a second consecutive year, after previous performances with First
Stage. Carlos would like to thank MYSO for his second experience in the John Downey
Creation Project, and thank Mr. Dan Duffy, in particular, for helping the group learn and
perfect the piece. Carlos would like to also thank Mr. Ron Foster, who mentored him this
and last year, for his assistance throughout this amazing journey, offering honesty and
encouragement while Serenity was being written. This has been an exceptional
experience for not only Carlos, but for everyone who has helped him and shown their
support. Along with this composition, Carlos is currently in the process of writing many
other musical pieces, including his first symphony. Carlos is grateful for this experience
and hopes you enjoy the concert!
ABIGAIL HANNA , CELLO
Abigail Hanna is a sixth grader at Robinwood Elementary School in
Franklin. She began playing the cello at age six, taking lessons from
Jane Borden, her former first grade teacher. Since third grade, Abby
has been a student of Ravenna Helson, Cello Instructor for MYSO’s
Progressions program and Principal Cello of the Milwaukee Ballet
Orchestra. At the age of eight, Abby started playing at MYSO in the
Progressions Program, and now, at age twelve, she is currently CoPrincipal Cello of Philharmonia. In addition to winning this year’s Philharmonia Concerto
Competition, Abigail was winner of the String Orchestra Competition in 2013, and was
named honorable mention for the Sinfonia Competition in 2014. She has been selected
to play for several master classes and has participated in MYSO’s Chamber Ensemble
Program for three years. For the past two years, she has performed with the Bach Players
chamber ensemble as a soprano and cellist. She recently advanced to State for her cello
solo in the WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival.
Abigail is a piano student, as well, and also plays the flute in the Robinwood School band.
When she is not playing the cello, she is on stage performing at First Stage Children’s
Theater. She has also performed with the Florentine Opera and Skai Academy of the
Performing Arts. Abigail is a UPAF performer for various functions, which allows her
the opportunity to give back to the organizations that have played such major roles in
her artistic development and achievements. Abigail is also a member of the Milwaukee
Ballet.
In addition to her passion for the Arts, Abigail enjoys reading, swimming, ice skating, and
spending time with her dog Charlie. She has a fascination with sea turtles and how to
protect them from extinction. Abigail is deeply grateful for the support of her family and
the loving, patient teaching of Ms. Ravenna.

Clement Mattox, a senior at Rufus King International High School in
Milwaukee, picked up the trumpet in sixth grade and began lessons
the following year with Thomas Dvorak. He has been a MYSO
member for six years, performing with the Wind Ensemble, Jazz
Studies, Senior Symphony and Chamber Orchestra—which tonight
will perform his Morceau Zenekari—and various other ensembles.
Clement has also acted as front man/guitarist in his rock band for
three years. As an aspiring player, composer and actor, he longs to embody the passion
art has always stirred in him through his own forms of expression. He is currently CoPrincipal Trumpet in Senior Symphony and would like to attend a conservatory to study
trumpet and composition after high school.
Clement wrote his piece with guidance from Amanda Schoofs, whom he would like
to thank for introducing him to new methods and ways of thinking when composing.
Morceau combines elements of classical orchestral technique with sharply contrasting
contemporary gestures. In an attempt to marry Schoenberg’s 12-tone-row with modern
electronica, it jets out an energetic sequence of independent ideas, smashed together
in an array of melody and emotion. Clement is highly influenced by composers such as
Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Bartok and Stockhausen.

MYSO is proud to collaborate with one of America’s premier new
music ensembles, Present Music, as we bring nine world premiere
student compositions to performance this year. In memory of Dr.
John Downey, both a visionary composer and an inspiring man,
MYSO musicians are invited to have the opportunity to meet with a
professional who guides them from the early structural and
conceptual issues of composition through the final printing and
rehearsals of their work. The John Downey Creation Project provides MYSO ensembles, as
well as the composers, an important and exciting experience by undertaking the many
challenges of new music.
John Downey served as Director of Music Theory and Composition for Music For Youth/
MYSO for more than 40 years and was a very important and beloved member of the
organization’s family until his passing in 2004. Dr. Downey, a Distinguished Professor of
Music at UW-Milwaukee, was an internationally renowned composer who collaborated
with the great artists of his time and, among many honors, was knighted by the French
government. Among many pieces performed by musicians all over the world, he wrote a
number of works for Music For Youth/MYSO, as his students were an essential and joyous
part of his career. Professor Downey played a critically important role in the lives of
thousands of students, several of whom have become noted composers. He was central
to our organization and mission for many years.
The 2015 John Downey Fellows are Veronica Dobbs, Devorah Fisher, Ben Karbowski,
Clement Mattox, Carlos Meyers, Lizzy Pantoga-Montoto, George Papajohn, Jeremy
Reutebuch, and Lucas Sem. We are confident that Dr. Downey would be thrilled by
the enthusiasm, creativity and the seriousness of purpose displayed by these young
composers, to whom he would have referred as “my geniuses.”
