These services include home-delivered and congregate meals, caregiver support, community-based assistance, preventive health services, legal assistance, elder abuse prevention, and much more. 3rd Annual Walk to Wellness Older Americans Month 2015: “Get into the Act” adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, Older communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Get into the Act,” to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact on the lives of others. The theme also reflects on the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Older Americans Act into law in July 1965. When Older Americans Month was established, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.” By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.” People age 65 and older now make up 14 percent of the total U.S. population, compared to 12.4 percent in 2000 and 4.1 percent in 1900. Individuals 50 and older inject $4.6 trillion into the economy. By 2032, this age group will account for more than half of the US gross national product. They also contribute over $100 billion annually to a variety of causes and concerns. While Four Pointes provides whole person wellness choices and a safety net of human services to older adults year-around, Older Americans Month offers an opportunity to emphasize how older adults can access the home and community-based services they need to live independently in their communities. It is also an occasion to highlight how older adults are engaging with and making a difference in those communities. The 50+ population is a net national asset – the fastest growing contingent of active, productive people who are working longer and taking the economy in new directions. The economic activity of the 50+ population is at least $7 trillion annually and is expected to grow to $13 trillion by 2032. People in their 50s and 60s start businesses at twice the rate of those in their 20s. BAM! According to the Longevity Economy, rather than lengthening extreme old age, the 30 years added to lifespans in the 20th century have resulted in a longer middle life, or “middle living” as my friend Tom Matt of the Boomers Rock radio show has dubbed this group. This economy shows that older people will not be a ‘drain’ or ‘burdensome’ to the economy, but will infuse the economy. While being productive, 50+ers are hugely capable of generous giving; contributing over $100 billion annually to a variety of charitable causes (70% of all charitable giving!). The Longevity Economy is also driving the direction of the healthcare industry. This will translate into a large demand for services such as home health services and aging-in-place technologies. (I still think we will see drones used in acute care settings to check on vitals and not disturb the patient when they are resting!) Least surprising, 90% of the elderly want to stay in their home, with 82% of them wanting to stay in their home even if health care supports are needed. The resurgence in homeshare situations and the growth of neighborhood villages that negotiate services on behalf of a neighborhood group are finding their way into mainstream living options. What a time we live in! Let’s celebrate the power in numbers – it is influencing our communities and society in ways yet to be explored! Warmest regards, NEW! One of the keys to a happy and successful life is emotional self-care. It’s harder to control your emotions when you’re young, but as you get older you should be better able to deal with them. Emotional self-care, along with stress management, is one of the best techniques to maintain overall well-being. Promote a positive attitude with these tips to help reduce stress and control emotions: • Spend more time with family and friends • Spend some time alone in quiet and peace • Cut down on wasted time • Meet old friends and have fun together • Go out on a date with your spouse • Seek balance by prioritizing activities • Listen to your favorite music • Indulge in a long neglected hobby Ignoring your emotional self-care can slowly drain your energy, hope and positive outlook on life. Sheer willpower can help you deal with life’s gravities to a certain extent, but it’s also helpful to remember that situations and the emotions that go along with them don’t last forever. Remember, by practicing emotional self-care, you can have greater control over your emotions and your attitude. 2015 Destination Pointes Four Pointes Day Trips Planned for 2015 We invite you to enjoy our trips with us. For most people, social media is a part of daily life. So what happens to the online content you created after you die? If you are active online, you should consider creating a statement of how you would like your online identity to be handled. Approach this statement as you would a will by appointing someone you trust to be your “online executor.” This person will be responsible for the closure of your email addresses, social media profiles, and blogs after you are deceased. Take these steps to help write a social media will: • Review the privacy policies and the terms and conditions of each website where you have a presence. • State how you would like your profiles to be handled. You may want to completely cancel your profile or keep it up for friends and family to visit. Some sites allow users to create a memorial profile where other users can still see your profile but can’t post anything new. 6 Highpointes Monthly Newsletter: May 2015 • Give the social media executor a document that lists all the websites where you have a profile, along with your usernames and passwords. • Stipulate in your will that the online executor should have a copy of your death certificate. The online executor may need this as proof in order for websites to take any actions on your behalf. • Check to see if the social media platforms have account management features to let you proactively manage what happens to your accounts after you die. For example, Google’s Inactive Account Manager allows you to manage how you want your online content to be saved or deleted. This feature also lets you give permission to your family or close friends to access the content you saved on Google websites after you die.
