A WORD FROM PASTOR TIM
As many of you read this, I’ll be either on my way to or
wandering around Istanbul, Turkey (May 1-5) or Antalya,
Turkey (May 6-11). I am due to arrive back at LAX on
Tuesday, May 12 . . . and back “in the pulpit” on Sunday,
May 17.
Many of you know that I go to Turkey twice a year. I go,
because I spent a chunk of my life there. I go, because the
place and people hold a special place in my heart. And I
go, because I want to be a good steward.
When I say “steward” I mean someone who takes care of
what has been given to them. God gave me a ministry in
Turkey, many relationships, and then lots of spiritual fruit
born out of those years. While I no longer live there, I
remain invested in what has and continues to transpire in
the lives of young men and women who belong to that
country and belong to Jesus Christ. Stewardship means
giving of myself, my time and my money to those many
relationships. Being a steward is part of my discipleship as
I follow Jesus Christ in my life. Being a steward is being an
adult, being a grown up! Stewardship is to take on a
lifestyle posture of being informed, engaged and giving.
Many of you already know this. You are stewards of all
kinds of relationships and things God has given to you.
What is parenting, if not one of the supreme examples of
being a steward?
Let’s talk money. As this issue of the PRESS is being sent
out you all have been doing very well, so far, meeting the
obligations FPC has taken on for 2015 as your elected
elders have determined. We are a wee bit in the red, but
nothing we can’t make up easily. And we are in
remarkably better shape than we were a year ago. Good
for you! Don’t stop doing what you are doing!

Yes, let’s keep this momentum of giving going. We have
yet to hire a part-time director of youth. We have not
found the right person. Thus, we are making other
provisions for now and summer. We want to leave this in
the hands of the new pastor to pick the person he/she
desires. That will require increased giving once that
person is located and hired for our youth.
As you will recall from the congregational meeting in
February, the salary for the new pastor will also require
greater giving on your part. The elders and PNC will be
talking to you in the coming weeks about increased costs,
their own commitment to give, and what they will call
upon you to do. Let’s start praying about this coming
discussion and ask God for open hearts and hands on the
part of us all. Let’s ask God to grow us into greater and
greater stewardship of what we’ve been given. That’s
been our story in Downey since 1886!

PROGRESS REPORTS


WE ARE CLOSE! THE PASTOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE is in the
process of discerning between finalists for our pastor position. This final
process involves in-person interviews and hearing the candidate preach
at a neutral pulpit. We hope and pray to bring before the
congregation our recommended candidate in the very near future.
I want to thank the PNC members for their time, hard work and their
wisdom as we have moved through this rigorous process. I also want to
thank our Los Ranchos Presbytery, particularly Jack Clement, Moderator
of the Committee on Ministry, for their guidance and encouragement.

THE ROAD TO CITIZENSHIP
I was born in the Republic of Cameroon in Central Africa. I did my secondary, high school, and university education in Cameroon. After
graduation from the university I was employed by the government of Cameroon as a Mathematics teacher. I taught Mathematics for Fourteen
(14 ) years before migrating to the United States in 2009.
The United States has a program called “Diversity Immigration Lottery” which gives qualified applicants a chance to move to the United States.
By the grace of God, I was one of those selected from the Cameroon to move to the United States with a GREEN CARD. Green Card holders
are Legal Permanent Residents of the United States. They can apply to become United States citizens after FIVE YEARS of continuous stay in the
United States. The path to citizenship is not that smooth. Here is how to apply;







Fill out an application of twenty-one (21 ) pages and include an application fee ($680)
Mail application and fee to the Department of Homeland Security
Application is reviewed and I was scheduled for a Biometric (finger printing) appointment. This was used to check my criminal record
in the United States and abroad.
No criminal record found, I was scheduled for an initial interview. On the day of the interview I was tested on United States history and
civics, written and spoken English, and also my family life. The interview was two hours long.
I answered every single question that was asked. At the end of the interview I was told that I had passed.
I took the Oath of citizenship on March 18, 2015 as a United State citizen at Los Angeles 3rd District Court.
Presently, John is a phase ll Credential student at Cal State Dominguez Hill and a substitute Mathematics teacher at Perris Union High School
District (PUHSD). I am also involved in observation and practice at Carson High School in LAUSD.
I want to seize this opportunity to thank the congregation of First Presbyterian Church, Downey for their prayers and support to me and my
