The evidence for the resurrection of Jesus is compelling – the empty tomb, the appearance of Jesus to his disciples and others, the transformation against all the odds of the bewildered, downcast and utterly defeated group of disciples to those who were to go out and share Christian good news across the world. But however compelling it might be, the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus can itself lead to a “so what?”, “whatever” kind of reaction. On the first Easter Day, the turning point of understanding came for Mary Magdalene when Jesus called her by name. She thought he was the gardener. “Mary,” said Jesus, and then came the moment of recognition. Easter is about life, new life, about Jesus risen from the dead, giving us hope when things feel hopeless, courage when we want to run away, strength to be open and vulnerable, confidence in the face of death. When things are at their worst, God acts. When things are dark, when human possibilities are exhausted, God acts; new life dawns. That was Mary’s experience; that can be ours too. The school inspector was looking at children’s work in the classroom. At the back of one little girl’s book, he found a small masterpiece. “What a wonderful poem,” he said. “They’re my spelling corrections,” replied the girl. Spelling corrections or not, they spelt out words for Easter. They read: Yesterday, yesterday, yesterday Sorrow, sorrow, sorrow Today, today, today Hope, hope, hope Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow Love, love, love Yes, Christ is risen. A very happy Easter. +Richard Pause for Thought We are an Easter people and “Alleluia” is our song. I know that Steven has used it on occasions and some of the Much Cowarne Matins congregation suggested that it was shared with a wider audience after I used it there in March. So here it is….. People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centred. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. Because in the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. Thank You! As some of you may know my dear wife Sally was admitted into Hereford Hospital on January 27th for cancer surgery. The initial surgery was successful and we were advised that the cancer had not spread. However there were some further complications and a second bout of surgery was deemed necessary. Sally was in hospital for a total of 5 weeks and came home on 3rd March. Sally also faces a reconstructive surgery procedure in the next few months. On behalf of Sally and myself I would like to offer our sincere and heartfelt thanks to all those people from the village and further afield who wish her well and those who sent cards, flowers and small gifts, please be assured that I will be replying to you all over the next few weeks. There are too many to name individually but I would like to thank Angela Lewis who arranged for prayers to be said for Sally in St Mary’s, which was a great comfort to both of us. Sally is now at home and starting the first steps on what will be a long road to full recovery. I have now retired so am assuming the role of Head Cook and Bottle Washer. In our married life Sally has given so very much to me now it's my turn to return the favour. Please ring Marlene on 01432 820282 Saint of the Month St Mark (25th April) Mark, whose home in Jerusalem became a place of rest for Jesus and his 12 apostles, is considered the traditional author of the second gospel. He is also usually identified as the young man, described in Mark 14:51, who followed Christ after his arrest and then escaped capture by leaving his clothes behind. Papias, in 130, said that in later years Mark became Peter’s interpreter. If so, then this close friendship would have been how Mark gathered so much information about Jesus’ life. Peter referred to him affectionately as his ‘son’. Mark was also a companion to Paul on his journeys. When Paul was held captive at Rome, Mark was with him, helping him. Mark’s Gospel, most likely written in Italy, perhaps in Rome, is the earliest account we have of the life of Jesus. Mark died about 74 AD. Early in the 9th century Mark’s body was brought to Venice, whose patron he became, and there it has remained to this day. The symbol of Mark as an evangelist, the lion, is much in evidence at Venice. We have a lot of different services happening in and around our Frome Valley churches and so this is a short series for those of you who have never been, to explain simply what goes on at some of them. And for those of you who do attend, there may be something of interest here too! We begin the series with some background on the increasingly popular service at Bishops Frome on the third Sunday of each month – High Mass. High Mass So “what is the difference between a weekly Communion Service and High Mass?” is probably the first question people might ask. Well the truthful answer (to coin Paul Daniels’ catchphrase) is “not a lot!” The service liturgy is exactly the same, using our normal Common Worship service books, which follow the church seasons. The main differences are in the presentation and symbolism. Probably most noticeable first of all is the extension in the procession at the beginning of the service. Usually it is just the crucifer (she carries the large cross before the procession) and either Steven or Richard bringing up the rear. For High Mass we also have a thurifer (who carries the thurible containing the burning incense), boat bearer (carrying the container which holds the incense), a server (who assists at the altar) and acolytes (carrying a candle each). The incense is symbolic, representing our prayers rising to God. It is used around the altar and the book of Gospels, which is 19 processed with the thurifer and acolytes for the Gospel reading. We also have bells which are rung during the Eucharistic prayer. These are sometimes known as Sanctus bells and can be rung at three or four points but mainly as the bread is elevated by the priest and then as the same is done for the wine. Part of the reason for this is historic, when the altar faced east and the priest had his back to the congregation so the people could not see what was happening. Also, in some churches, a heavy rood screen separated the congregation from the sanctuary area, again obscuring view. So the bells told the congregation which point of the service they had reached. A few people are wary of High Mass, thinking it is a bit “mysterious”. But the extra symbolism and reverence is part of its attraction and many who do attend think it is far more meaningful because of it. If you are not keen on incense, just sit near the back because once the procession has reached the front of the church you won’t smell it much back there. So why not give it a try? However, what is far more annoying is that when he later spoke to Richard he was as nice as pie! I’m not going to be tempted into expressing my views on why that might be (something to do with me being a lowly female perhaps….) but it is times like this when I can certainly sympathise with writer Mark Twain who said, “The more I know of people, the more I love my dog!” Sadly there are those people who look down on everyone they meet and think themselves superior. They forget that the person in front of them is a human being, just the same as them, usually trying to do the best they can. Why do they think that being horrid will get them anywhere? But even we nice people (which I hope we all are) can have our moments when we are not as patient as we might be. Be honest; has your blood-pressure never risen when a bank or utility company aren’t sorting out your problem as you would wish? Or when the shop assistant keeps you waiting as she chats to the person in front of you? Or when the waitress forgets to bring you something because she is rushed off her feet and the restaurant is busy? Now I am not going to try and defend corporate companies with robotic voices in far-away places who can only function as their computer screens allow. But what about those individual people we meet in our daily life? We may be in a hurry but the chatty shop assistant may know that the person in front of us lives alone and rarely speaks to anyone except for their weekly visit to that shop. The assistant may give that lonely person some conversation that they look forward to each week. One of our customers now lives alone and so her call to us to order piano music is also a chance to talk enthusiastically about the progress of her pupils. I don’t for a minute pretend that there are times I am not thinking “I’ve got to get on!” but I have to remember that I have Richard to chat to and she has no-one. 23 Or the waitress? Now, even in the middle of a conversation, I always try to acknowledge a waitress and give them a smile because I am a people-watcher and have seen the appalling way that many people treat those who serve them at table. Not a look, not a smile, not a “thank you”. Just as if the poor girl was someone to be looked down on – a servant. But she might be studying for her degree and only be working at tables to earn some extra money. When I was training to be a librarian, one piece of advice we were given was “when you start a new job the first thing you do is make friends with the cleaner”. I’ve always tried to remember it, not just in work but in all walks of life. Sometimes when I’ve arrived to give a flower demonstration and the venue has a caretaker I have been really grateful to him for helping me in with all my stuff. He has come out in the evening, perhaps in horrid weather, to unlock the hall, put out chairs and help me in. The least I would do is offer him a big smile and a “thank you” but often I have got the impression that these simple acts are a rare occurrence for him. How awful is that?! Don’t strive only to impress those at the top because they won’t hold any loyalty to you. Look after the little people because, if you are nice to them, they will usually be nice to you and help you when you need it. After all, if you take away the almighty dollar and the material things of life, most of us are all the same – honest people working hard, wanting to make a difference and looking for a smile from someone. Why not give somebody one of yours today? The amount raised was £520 - a truly magnificent sum. Fromes Hill church would like to say a special thank you to Kath, her family and all her helpers for their time and commitment to this fund raising. It is not the first time they have done this, in fact over the last two years they have organised several for us and we are very grateful. Kath has asked that those who have supported her by providing prizes and by attending the Bingo be acknowledged in FVN, especially Kevin, the landlord of The Wheatsheaf who donated a £24 voucher for a meal at the pub. So to all of you a very big thank you - it is very much appreciated. Jill Southall & Joan Rose (churchwardens) Hymns: The Story Behind… “Jesu, lover of my soul” Usually sung to the great Welsh tune Aberystwyth, this hymn sprung out of quite a dramatic event. Hymn writer, Charles Wesley was preaching in the fields of Killyleagh, Co. Down, when he was set upon by a group of men opposed to his beliefs. Wesley made a run for it and found himself at the farm of Jane Lowrie Moore. Jane hid him in the milk shed and when the attackers arrived, demanding to know where Wesley had gone, she calmed them down and gave them refreshments. While they ate and drank she returned to the milk shed and let Wesley out through a rear window to hide under a hedge. A little brook ran past his hiding place and it is said that, “with the cries of his pursuers all about him” he wrote the words to “Jesu, lover of my soul”. That’s how the story goes anyway! It was published in 1739 in “Hymns and Sacred Poems” The famous tune Aberystwyth was written Joseph Parry. He was born in Merthyr Tydfil but emigrated to Pennsylvania in the USA with his family when he was just twelve. He worked in the furnaces but his first love was music and, after returning to Britain he studied music, eventually becoming Professor of Music at the University of Wales. Two personal memories from Birmingham; firstly a neighbour had a very strong childhood memory of living in Wales and hearing the men returning from the mines each evening, singing this hymn in their great Welsh harmonies. But a little more light-heartedly, oone of our organists was previously at a church which sat beside the local pub. When the choir sang the line “safe into the haven guide” knowing smiles would circulate through the tenors and basses – the pub next door was called “The Haven”! 25 DO YOU HAVE A FEW HOURS TO SPARE? Shakespeare died on 23rd April 1616. It is known that he was born in April 1564. He was baptised on April 26th 1564 so, due to customs of the time, it is suggested that he was born on April 23rd. 2. Shakespeare had seven siblings: Joan, Margaret, Gilbert, another Joan, Anne, Richard and Edmund. 3. Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway when she was already pregnant. Their first child was born six months after the wedding! Shakespeare was 18 when they married and Anne was the grand old age of 26. 4. Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway had three children; Hamnet, Susanna and Judith. The only grandchild was Elizabeth, daughter of Susanna, but she died childless in 1670 so Shakespeare has no descendants. 5. Shakespeare was buried in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford upon Avon. Because of the customary practice of the time to dig up bones to make room for others, Shakespeare is believed to have put a curse on anyone daring to move his remains. It appears on his tomb: Good friend for Jesus’ sake forbear To dig the dust enclosed here: Blest be the man that spares these stones, And curst be he that moves my bones. To this day, Shakespeare’s grave remains undisturbed. 6. Shakespeare is always thought of as an Elizabethan playwright but most of his popular works were written after Elizabeth I’s death, making him more of a Jacobean author. Scholars say that his later plays show characteristics of Jacobean drama. 7. His shortest play is Comedy of Errors and his longest play is Hamlet – four hours if uncut! 8. Shakespeare died a wealthy man as he was a very good businessman with a large property portfolio. 9. Some scholars think that Shakespeare did not actually write his plays with over forty other writers being suggested as the true author. However, there is strong evidence that Shakespeare is indeed the author. 10. All the satellites of Uranus are named after Shakespearean characters. And finally, your editor and your Associate Minister spent their honeymoon at the Shakespeare Hotel in Stratford on 23rd April 1994, where all the rooms were named after Shakespearean characters. Fortunately for us ours was not “Lady Macbeth” but “Robin Goodfellow” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Anything with lemon on a menu always gets my choice so here is a nice lemon cake to welcome the summer months ahead. It went down well recently at “Cake & Contemplation” so give it a try for a nice afternoon tea. Lemon Sponge 225g soft butter 225g caster sugar 225g self-raising flour 2 tsp baking powder Finely grated zest of one or two lemons (depending on how lemony you like it!) 4 eggs Pre-heat the oven to Gas 4 / 180. Grease and line the base of two 8 inch sandwich tins with baking parchment. Measure all the ingredients into a large bowl or mixer and beat well until thoroughly blended. Divide the mixture between the tins and level the tops. Bake in the oven for about 25 minutes or until well risen and the tops spring back when lightly pressed with your finger. Leave to cool in the tins for a while, then turn out and remove the baking parchment. Leave to finish cooling on a rack. Lemon Butter Icing 200g icing sugar (sifted) 65g softened butter 2 rounded tbsp. good quality lemon curd for the icing, plus extra (see recipe below) Put the softened butter into a bowl and beat until pale and creamy. An electric mixer is the quickest way to do this. Sift the icing sugar into the butter and add the lemon curd. Beat (using the lowest speed at first if you are still using the electric mixer and you don’t want to get covered!) until very smooth. When the cakes are completely cold spread half the icing on one half of the cake. Spread a layer of lemon curd on the other half and sandwich together. Spread the remainder of the butter icing onto the top of the cake. You can finish off with a little grated lemon zest if you wish. N.B. The icing will keep in the fridge until you are ready to use it but give it time to re-soften at room temperature before trying to spread it. And don’t forget, I’d love to receive your favourite recipes so do send them in! 33 PRIVATE LANGUAGE TUITION Country Buds For children and adults Creative flowers for all occasions, local delivery French, Spanish, English, Romanian Qualified teacher Yvonne Berry NAFAS Area Demonstrator Contact Anca Higgins BA(Hons) on Home 01885490775 mob 07795575547 34 01885 489411 or 07704 504278 . Just for a Laugh…. A small boy wanted a baby brother, so his father suggested he pray every night for one. The boy began to pray earnestly, night after night. When nothing happened, he gave up. After a few months his dad said they were going to see mum in the hospital and he was going to get a big surprise. When they got to the room, the little boy saw his mother holding two babies. “Well, what do you think about having twin brothers?” his dad asked. The little boy thought for a moment and replied: “It is a good thing I stopped praying when I did.” 39 01432 261791 Frome valley news 90mm x 55mm Pest Control Fast, friendly, professional Council approved Contact: James Ostler 0800 9788 934 Mobile: 07530 843336 www.Positive-Environmental.co.uk 40 The Friends of St. Mary’s Church Building Bishop’s Frome. FASTER BROADBAND Our turn for Fastershire at last Hopefully you will remember hearing about the Borders Broadband project, which is using Government money, matched by Hereford Council, to bring superfast broadband to Herefordshire. By the end of 2016 in Herefordshire around 90% of homes and businesses will have access to fibre broadband and everyone in the project area will have access to a minimum of 2Mbps. The ultimate aim is that by the end of 2018 there will be access to broadband speeds to 24Mbps and above for all who need it. This project has been branded Fastershire. We are in Area 9 and work is due to start here around now –surveying is already under way in the Bosbury exchange area. It’s important to realise that this work will not automatically improve everyone’s speed – to get the fast broadband you will have to sign up for BT’s Infinity. Visit www.fastershire.com to register your interest in the superfast broadband service (Infinity) which will become available to those of us near enough to a fibre enabled exchange or cabinet. On the homepage at www.fastershire.com the What’s Happening feed gives daily updates on the project. This covers everything from the latest cabinets to go live, interesting developments across the campaign, details of where BT are working this week or changes to forecast dates. The new Exchange information page at www.fastershire.com/exchanges is updated on a regular basis and lists the most recent developments at each individual exchange. As always, users of the website can find out about their line, including the exchange to which they are connected and the project’s schedule in their area, by using the postcode and phone line checker at www.fastershire.com. Residents with specific queries should go to [email protected], and the Facebook page and Twitter feed also provide regular updates of which area the project has reached and can address enquiries: www.facebook.com/fastershire and @Fastershire. You may or may not be aware that the Government has announced the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme for domestic properties. This scheme is a world first and rewards people for generating their own 'Green Heat' using Renewable Heating Systems in their homes. Renewable Heating Systems such as Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP's), Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP's) and Solar Thermal Panels can either provide you with the same amount of heat that you are currently using but at a significantly cheaper cost or alternatively can provide you with 3 to 4 times more heat for the same amount you are currently paying on your fuel bills. For example: Heating requirement for average 4 bedroom detached property = 25,000kWh/year (1) x average cost of oil/kWh of 7.1p = £1,775/year oil bill Vs (2) (3) x average cost of GSHP/kWh of 3p (average cost of electric/kWh of 13p ÷ Seasonal Performance Factor of GSHP of 4.3 ) = £750/year electric bill ALTERNATIVELY £1,775 buys 25,000kWh of heat from oil @ 7.1p/kWh Or £1,775 buys 59,167kWh of heat from a GSHP @ 3p/kWh Previously, the above benefits were compromised due to Renewable Heating Systems being significantly more expensive to buy than fossil fuel systems. The RHI scheme aims to break down this barrier by paying customers a yearly Tax Free Income for going 'Green' which will cover the additional capital cost of the renewable system. For example: Average cost of oil heating system for average 4 bedroom detached property = £5,000 Average cost of GSHP heating system for average 4 bedroom detached property = £15,000 Therefore, additional cost of renewable system = £10,000 (4) (3) (4) Tax Free Income under the RHI scheme = 25,000kWh x (1-1/4.3 x 18.8p /kWh = £3,606.98/year x 7 year tariff lifetime = £25,248.86 Profit = £15,246.86 So can we finally say goodbye to the current woolly jumpers and frugal use of our heating systems in order to try and keep our fuel bills down?!
