April was a great month with a lot of wonderful activities and events for our students. We have really great students and it has been fun and inspiring to see them with all they are involved in. The month of May will go extremely quick and is just about as busy. We have several concerts with great singers and musicians that will take place to end the year which are excellent if you haven’t had the opportunity to attend one. Our choir, bands, and orchestra received steller ratings at Colorado West! In addition, we have our Fruita Graduation ceremony on May 12 th, at 7:00 pm. It is definitely exciting to see our former freshmen walk across the stage to receive their diplomas and continue on their path to success. The following day, May 13 th, there is no school for both FMHS and Fruita 8/9 students as in past years. On May 15th, we have our annual Grill-n-Chill where we get to hang out with our students in the afternoon and participate in various planned fun activities. In the last week of school, we have finals on the 19th and 20th. It will be the same schedule that we had at the end of first semester. Students will be dismissed on Wednesday, May 20 th at 10:50 after their last final. The last ten minutes of time will be spent cleaning out lockers. Students will show teachers their lockers before they leave to ensure that it is checked off as cleaned out. Those students who do not clean out lockers or who damage a locker will be assessed a $10 fee. Busses will run the normal time that day for those students who stay until the end of the day. For those of you wanting to get a jump on dates for next year, we will be doing check-in on July 22nd and July 23rd. Those students who have last names A-K will check in on July 22nd, and those students who have last names L-Z will check in on July 23rd. Check in times for both days are from 10:30-3:30. The first day of school starts August 3rd. Please see the school web-site for specifics on all activities and events remaining for the year. I would like to thank you for all the hard work that you put in with your students. It has been a pleasure to work with them throughout the year. I look forward to another wonderful year next year. Have a great summer! Sincerely, Jason Plantiko Principal Fruita 8/9 School Go Wildcats! Fruita 8/9 Staff and Administration May highlights from your Image from Calgary Public Library Preventing the “Summer Slide” According to the National Summer Learning Association, all students who do not participate in educational activities over the summer will experience learning loss. Lack of access to reading materials is one of the biggest contributors to what is dubbed the “Summer Slide.” Here are some tips to help reduce summertime lapse: Expect your kids to read every single day this summer. You could start a family book club, turn amount of reading into a friendly competition between siblings, or participate in the public library’s summer reading program. Plan to visit local educational places (such as museums and libraries) or attend local events that would have educational benefits. WCCC has summer camps available for youth. If you’re going on a vacation, ask your child to plan a part of the trip using maps, brochures, budgeting, etc. Use online games or apps to practice math and foreign language skills. Require a daily balance between fun outdoors, screen time, and reading time. Everything in moderation will help kids to make the most of their summer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May App of the Month Overdrive Free; available on iOs & Android Download the Overdrive app to get digital access to thousands of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMusic, and eVideos using your public library card. Use it to play an eAudiobook in the car while on a summer road trip with the family or to help your teen borrow free reading materials while they’re out on break.
