We need to change Australia’s drinking culture More than 3000 Queensland Catholic students were involved 5.5 in GOKA in 2014. Our results show that after participation in GOKA: 37% of Australians have experienced alcohol related violence (FARE, 2014). 79% of Australians believe that more needs to be done (FARE, 2014). Early alcohol misuse is a major contributor to alcohol-related harm (Unicef, 2011). Teenagers start drinking alcohol at 15.6 years (AIHW, 2014). One in four 12–17 year-olds reported drinking alcohol in the last week. One in four adolescent deaths are alcohol-related (Toumbourou et al., 2009). In a survey of more than 12 000 people, 85% of Queenslanders supported compulsory alcohol education for Year 7–12 students.
