We need to change Australia’s drinking culture
More than 3000 Queensland Catholic students were involved
5.5 in GOKA in 2014.
Our results show that after participation in GOKA:
37% of Australians have experienced alcohol related violence (FARE, 2014).
79% of Australians believe that more needs to be done (FARE, 2014).
Early alcohol misuse is a major contributor to alcohol-related harm (Unicef, 2011).
Teenagers start drinking alcohol at 15.6 years (AIHW, 2014).
One in four 12–17 year-olds reported drinking alcohol in the last week.
One in four adolescent deaths are alcohol-related (Toumbourou et al., 2009).
In a survey of more than 12 000 people, 85% of Queenslanders supported compulsory alcohol
education for Year 7–12 students.
In 2014 the Queensland government mandated Year 7–12 students receive 10 hours per year of
alcohol, illicit drug use and drug-related violence education (Queensland Government, 2014).

We know that students don’t always want to sit quietly and listen. Game On: Know Alcohol (GOKA), a social
marketing program, has been designed to allow students to participate in a range of online games, quizzes
and practical activities such as wearing beer goggles and experiencing what it means to lose control. Together
these activities effectively deliver key messages about alcohol.
