"The drawings are so delicate and detailed in the rendering that the photographic image appears to be a
slightly tinted fine transparent film placed over the drawing. The effect is of ambiguity. It is hard to
tell whether the photograph overlays the drawing or replaces the drawing. The edge of the photographic
image also acts as an aperture through which we see a more distant, vaster landscape that softens and
disappears into the expanse of the white paper, allowing our imagination to travel further."

Biography
Genevieve Swifte is an award winning artist, photographer and PhD candidate at The Australian National
University School of Art, Photography and Media Arts Workshop.
Swifte has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards and her works are held in public collections,
including the Queensland State Library, Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt and the Upernavik Museum in
Greenland. Swifte also collaborates with a number of artists including composer Cheryl E. Leonard with
whom she has presented Sila, 2012, in Argentina, Mexico, Australia and the United States, and is a founding
member of the artist collective Relative Constructions. Recent exhibitions include The Poetic Lens at M16 in
Canberra, Australia; Quotidean, Elements of the Everyday: Water, CelerySpace, Berkeley, California; Sur Polar: Arte
en Antarctida, Galeria de Arte Contemporaneo de Xalapa, Mexico and the Museo de Arte Tigre, Buenos Aries,
Argentina. Research interests include the photography of Francesca Woodman, the performative earth art of Ana
Medietta, photographic histories and philosophies, sound art, feminist theory, affect and the aesthetics of light.
