The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Launching Global Web-Based Continuing Education Seen & Heard NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION U.S. POSTAGE PAID the Official Publication of the Alumni Association of NYEE PERMIT No. 1235 BROOKLYN, NY The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary 310 East 14th Street, New York, NY 10003 Further development and refinement to the curriculum will occur, but each topic will ultimately be illustrated by one or more video segments and conventional lectures. The expectation is that participants in this program will have improved their ability to: ■ Perform a proper history on ocular trauma patients. ■ Outline the proper work-up of ocular trauma patients, based on the nature and severity of the injury. ■ List imaging options available for evaluating ocular trauma patients. ■ Discuss the medical and surgical options for optimal treatment of complex ocular trauma patients. ■ Properly care for the ocular trauma patient either directly or through referral to appropriate subspecialists. The inaugural program is planned for the third quarter of 2014, recorded at NYEE for on-demand webcast. The course will be accredited by The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Institute for Continuing Medical Education for a maximum of 4 AMA PRA CATEGORY 1 Credits. It is our expectation that this initiative will serve as the foray to further advance the imprimatur of NYEE as a global leader in physician education and training, and that we will continue to identify other areas within Ophthalmology and our other core specialties to develop additional programs. These programs will be promoted through web-based announcements as well as advertisements in professional journals. We welcome your participation and interest and should you have questions or comments about this or other initiatives at NYEE, please contact me at 212-979-4666 or [email protected] the Official Publication of the Alumni Association of NYEE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF THE NEW YORK EYE AND EAR INFIRMARY 2013 Officers: RICHARD DELUCA, MD President JOHN ALJIAN, MD SHARON GIESE, MD MICHAEL PITMAN, MD Executive Board By Allan Fine, Senior Vice President, Chief Strategy and Operations Officer A major objective for increasing the global visibility of NYEE is to demonstrate the clinical, research and educational expertise that exists within our medical staff. Advances in technology now enable NYEE to impart knowledge, surgical expertise and clinical diagnostic skill throughout the world to Residents, Fellows and practicing Ophthalmologists all at different stages of their careers. One means of promoting the NYEE brand is through an educational initiative expected to evolve into an annual event at a minimum and, likely, more frequent offerings. Through a grant from Carl Zeiss Meditec, NYEE will develop a webcast seminar, having sole discretion in the design of content and selection of instructors for the program. In conjunction with faculty and voluntary clinical leadership of our Ophthalmology department, an interdisciplinary team of Administration, Information Systems, Institute for Continuing Medical Education, Public Affairs and Marketing and Development considered various topics that would generate interest in the target audiences (i.e., ophthalmologists, residents, and emergency room staff treating eye injuries). The topic “Management of Ocular Trauma” was selected based on the fact that knowledge and experience is often limited among community ophthalmologists, residents, physician assistants, and/or emergency room personnel who are the initial contact point for such injured patients. Many find managing eye trauma challenging because these cases are varied and complex. Ocular trauma is a serious problem for the health system and for the economy overall as an estimated 2.4 million eye injuries annually result in more than a billion dollars a year in total costs to society. Many of these types of injuries are preventable and, in general, the more serious types of ocular trauma, such as ruptured globes and corneal lacerations requiring surgical reconstruction, are infrequently seen by most ophthalmologists. The online symposium will consist of a combination of brief lectures and edited video presentations with voice overs illustrating various topics, as well as panel discussions from various ophthalmic subspecialists in the evaluation and management of traumatic eye injuries. The program as outlined will include sections on eyelid and orbital trauma, trauma to the globe (anterior and posterior segments) and pediatric trauma.Video clips will include examples of ruptured globe, primary closure, sclera buckle repair, and secondary repair vitrectomy and rehabilitation muscle surgery. He explained that given the merger with Mount Sinai Health System, the board would be moving forward toward an advisory position. He thanked members for their years of stewardship citing NYEE’s strong financial and clinical position, and the benefits of partnership with the Icahn School of Medicine. NYEE president Mc Kessler also cited the superlative work of the board, and the time frame for separation from New York Medical School as June 30, 2014.
