A major objective for increasing the global visibility of NYEE is
to demonstrate the clinical, research and educational expertise
that exists within our medical staff. Advances in technology now
enable NYEE to impart knowledge, surgical expertise and clinical
diagnostic skill throughout the world to Residents, Fellows and
practicing Ophthalmologists all at different stages of their careers.
One means of promoting the NYEE brand is through an educational
initiative expected to evolve into an annual event at a minimum
and, likely, more frequent offerings.
Through a grant from Carl Zeiss Meditec, NYEE will develop a
webcast seminar, having sole discretion in the design of content
and selection of instructors for the program. In conjunction with
faculty and voluntary clinical leadership of our Ophthalmology
department, an interdisciplinary team of Administration, Information
Systems, Institute for Continuing Medical Education, Public
Affairs and Marketing and Development considered various topics
that would generate interest in the target audiences (i.e.,
ophthalmologists, residents, and emergency room staff treating
eye injuries).
The topic “Management of Ocular Trauma” was selected based
on the fact that knowledge and experience is often limited among
community ophthalmologists, residents, physician assistants,
and/or emergency room personnel who are the initial contact
point for such injured patients. Many find managing eye trauma
challenging because these cases are varied and complex.
Ocular trauma is a serious problem for the health system and for
the economy overall as an estimated 2.4 million eye injuries
annually result in more than a billion dollars a year in total costs
to society. Many of these types of injuries are preventable and, in
general, the more serious types of ocular trauma, such as
ruptured globes and corneal lacerations requiring surgical
reconstruction, are infrequently seen by most ophthalmologists.
The online symposium will consist of a combination of brief lectures
and edited video presentations with voice overs illustrating various
topics, as well as panel discussions from various ophthalmic
subspecialists in the evaluation and management of traumatic eye
injuries. The program as outlined will include sections on eyelid
and orbital trauma, trauma to the globe (anterior and posterior
segments) and pediatric trauma.Video clips will include examples
of ruptured globe, primary closure, sclera buckle repair, and
secondary repair vitrectomy and rehabilitation muscle surgery.

Dear Fellow Alumni,
On this cover you will find photos taken on September 19,
when NYEE’s board of directors met for the last time. Chairman
Sorrell Mathes presided as host of this dinner, which took
place at Aretsky’s Patroon restaurant, as the last formal meeting
of the NYEE board. He explained that given the merger with
Mount Sinai Health System, the board would be moving
forward toward an advisory position. He thanked members
for their years of stewardship citing NYEE’s strong financial
and clinical position, and the benefits of partnership with the
Icahn School of Medicine. NYEE president Mc Kessler also
cited the superlative work of the board, and the time frame
for separation from New York Medical School as June 30, 2014.
He also reported that Sinai’s president and CEO Dr. Kenneth
Davis is supportive of NYEE’s continuing growth and expansion.
In his address to the audience at our October 3 gala, Dr. Davis
noted: “Collaborating under the auspices of a single medical
school–the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai –and
building on New York Eye and Ear Infirmary’s outstanding
reputation, we will develop research and clinical programs in
ophthalmology and otolaryngology that are nothing short of the
best in the country.”
In the News
Michael J. Pitman, MD, Director of NYEE’s Voice and Swallowing Institute, has been appointed to
the advisory board of The Voice Foundation, the world’s oldest and leading organization dedicated to
vocal medicine, science and education…Under the guidance of Stimson Schantz, MD, NYEE’s chief
of head & neck surgery, and Nelson Co, CRNA, a team from International Surgical Mission Support
traveled to Kenya to provide medical and surgical care in a remote village clinic for two weeks in October.
The volunteer team of 24 providers –including surgeons, internists, nursing staff, and operating support –
treated hundreds of patients for conditions such as head & neck cancer, thyroid goiter and myriad
diseases endemic to the area.

for their years of stewardship citing NYEE’s strong financial
and clinical position, and the benefits of partnership with the
Icahn School of Medicine.
