“Fostering action through education, innovation & networking to promote
the priorities of Philadelphia-area Energy Professionals”
May 2015
NEW APPLICATIONS FOR SOLAR & ENERGY STORAGE
There are many developing technologies and new applications in the always
evolving solar and energy storage fields. Come learn about the following applications:
 EV Charging
 Home Area Networks & Demand Response
 Ancillary Services from Electric Storage
 Distribution Automation (conservation voltage reduction/fault isolation)
 Solar power and inverter integration
While at Solar Grid Storage, one of our speaker's milestone projects was the
building of The GridStar Center in cooperation with Penn State University at
The Philadelphia Navy Yard. GridStar a DOE sponsored full scale Micro
Grid Facility was built to accelerate the commercialization of renewable energy, Advanced Inverter and Advanced Energy Storage technologies through
Education, Workforce Development, Demonstration and Certification Programs. The meeting will conclude with a tour of the Gridstar facility and the
technology and applications that are in place today. more information on the
GridStar facility can be found here.

About Our Speaker:
Donald C. Bradley, Jr.
Before Joining Alstom Grid, Don was Founder of an innovative company
Registration Info! (Solar Grid Storage) that dramatically increased the understanding, marketability and value of deploying Renewable Energy MicroGrids with advanced
inverter and energy storage systems with commercial / military / industrial /
utility solar projects by identifying and monetizing new and untapped revenue
streams that reduced installed coasts and enabled energy surety and security.
The challenge that drive’s Don now is to identify that additional “Stack of
Benefits” and bring those additional values to our customers and development partners.

EDUCATION INITIATIVE: VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
STUDENT - ENERGY PROFESSIONAL MEETING LIAISON
In our effort to attract and grow our student participation and membership, we are launching an Education
Initiative to connect students interested in attending GPAEE meetings with a Member Liaison. The Member
Liaison initiative was created to help these students have a positive first experience with our group and offer
an opportunity to connect one on one with energy professionals. Member Liaisons would be responsible for:
1. Contacting the student in advance of the meeting to introduce themselves & get some understanding of what the student would like to accomplish by attending a GPAEE meeting
2. Meeting with the student at the designated meeting site and helping the student get accustomed to
the meeting environment
3. Introducing student to at least 2 other members; preference to members that meet student's interests or goals for attending the meeting (if known)
4. Get any feedback from student on his/her meeting experience & on whether goals were met.
We need your help! GPAEE is looking for
volunteers to be Member Liaisons.
If you are interested in helping the next generation of professionals into
the energy industry, please contact Helen Silvis at 215-668-1065 or email
[email protected] to learn more and participate.

ENERGY NEWS
WOLF’S PICK TO HEAD PUC WILL PROMOTE ENERGY-SAVING POLICIES, GREEN
GROUPS SAY
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s pick as the new head of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is a sign that the new administration is serious about choosing key officials who can make a difference on energy efficiency and climate change, environmental campaigners said on Thursday. The
Democratic governor named Gladys Brown, a current member of the utilities regulator, as its new
chair, replacing Robert Powelson, who remains on the panel as a commissioner. (more)
ENERGY DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE $75 MILLION FOR ‘FUELS FROM SUNLIGHT’ HUB
The Energy Department on April 28 announced $75 million in funding to renew the Joint Center for
Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP), an Office of Science Energy Innovation Hub originally established
in 2010 with the goal of harnessing solar energy for the production of fuel. JCAP researchers are focused on achieving the major scientific breakthroughs needed to produce liquid transportation fuels
from a combination of sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, using artificial photosynthesis. Under the
renewal plan, the five-year-old center would receive funding for an additional five years of research,
subject to congressional appropriations. (more)
ENERGY DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES $10.5 MILLION FOR NEXT-GENERATION MARINE
ENERGY SYSTEMS
The Energy Department on April 28 announced $10.5 million in available funding to support the design and operation of innovative marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) systems. Advances in survivability
and reliability-related testing of these systems will help these devices harness more energy from
oceans and rivers. (more)
EIA ANNUAL ENERGY OUTLOOK 2015
Projections in the Annual Energy Outlook 2015 (AEO2015) focus on the factors expected to shape U.S.
energy markets through 2040. The projections provide a basis for examination and discussion of energy market trends and serve as a starting point for analysis of potential changes in U.S. energy policies,
rules, and regulations, as well as the potential role of advanced technologies. (more)
AMENDMENT TO STOP FUNDING FOR DOE’S FURNACE RULE PASSES HOUSE
On April 30, the House of Representatives passed an amendment offered by Representative Blackburn (R-Tenn.) to the fiscal year 2016 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill that would eliminate
funding for the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NOPR) that the Department of Energy (DOE) released in March, which proposes to establish a nationwide 92 percent standard for natural gas furnaces. APGA is very concerned that this NOPR will deter consumers from purchasing natural gas furnaces given that the furnaces that would meet these new efficiency standards are condensing furnaces,
which require additional venting. APGA believes that the additional venting costs that consumers will
incur will result in fuel switching to less efficient electric heaters/furnaces in the retrofit market as the
initial cost to install condensing furnaces will be much higher. Congresswoman Blackburn’s amendment would prohibit DOE, starting October 1, from using any resources on the furnace rule for a
period of one year, which is the 2016 fiscal year. (more)
GRANT GO-GETTERS EMBRACE THE 'GREEN SIDE' IN PENNSYLVANIA
When Tony Bandiero signed on to become a board member of the Greater Philadelphia Clean Cities
(GPCC) coalition seven years ago, it seemed an unlikely match. This was because Bandiero came from
“the dark side” — the petroleum industry — as he likes to joke. Bandiero learned about Clean Cities
when he attended a GPCC board meeting on behalf of his employer, who was trying to gain support
to build an E-85 station. Shortly after, he was asked to serve on the coalition’s board of directors. His
move to the “green side” became complete when he took the helm as executive director about five
years ago. (more)
