Upcoming Assessments
Sunday, April 19
The Georgia Milestone End of Grade Assessments (grades 3-8) will be April 20 to May 1, 2015.
Residential students return
Students who are prepared, calm, and rested perform better on tests. Here are some of the
many ways to help your student approach Georgia Milestones in a relaxed, positive way:
•• Encourage your student to employ good study and test-taking skills. These skills include
following directions carefully, avoiding careless errors, and reviewing work.
•• Explain the purpose of the tests. The assessments give students an opportunity to show what
they have learned in school. They also give teachers information that helps them plan
instruction.
•• Point out that some items may be more difficult than others.
•• Be certain your student gets plenty of sleep and has a healthy breakfast and lunch. Taking
tests is hard work for many students and can require a lot of energy.
•• Be certain your student is at school on time. Rushing and worrying about being late could
affect performance on the tests.
•• Remember to ask your student about the testing at the end of each day.
Georgia Milestone End of Course assessments (for highschool students) will be
May 7 –May 18, 2015. More information to come!

What can I do to help my student?
GSD Students Attend Woodcraft Workshop
Over twenty GSD students participated in an afternoon
wood craft project over a period of several afternoons. John
Johnston of Cave Spring taught the class to both Middle
School and High School students. The students built, painted
and decorated three legged stools using basic hand tools. The
workshop occurs yearly and is paid for by the Alton Holman
Heritage Arts organization. The students had a great
experience and are proud of their creations.
GSD FACES
Did you Know?
Sign language is a visual language.
You probably did!
This one is pretty obvious, but it’s important
to mention. Sign language is just like spoken
language in many ways, but it’s also different.
Sign can be very straightforward and formal,
but it can also take full advantage of its
visual nature for expressive or artistic effect,
as shown in the story in this video.
Which, when you think
about it, doesn’t make sign
language all that different
after all. For expressive
purposes, we can take full
advantage of spoken language’s auditory
nature. We can also take advantage of facial
expressions and gestures when we speak.
Everything that would be in an artistic
spoken performance—the words, the ordering
of clauses, the pauses, the breath intake,
the intonation and melody, the stressing or
deemphasizing of sounds, the facial and vocal
emotion, the body posture and head and
hand gestures—come through together in
sign language. It looks amazing not because
it shows us what sign language can do, but
because it shows us what language does.
