AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES
Non-credit courses offered by:
Deaf-Hearing Communication Centre
ABOUT OUR CLASSES
Due to the unique visual nature of American Sign Language (ASL), all lessons are presented without the use of voice. This effective teaching method is
applied in most credit and non-credit ASL classes to enable students to develop strong receptive and expressive ASL skills. Students at each level will be
introduced to ASL vocabulary, as well as proper ASL grammar. Interaction with teachers, who are native ASL users, in a relaxed setting with peers,
provides students with both structured and spontaneous dialogue practice. This gives students the opportunity to develop appropriate conversational
strategies that are unique to American Deaf Culture.
Age Requirement: 18 years or older
Placement Evaluation: Required for any students transferring from other programs, or if it has been more than one year since you enrolled in a class.
Evaluations only needed for students enrolling in ASL 1.2 or higher. Contact Janine Nolan to discuss details and set up an evaluation if needed.
Cancellation/Refund Policy: DHCC reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to insufficient enrollment on the date of the deadline.
DHCC will run a class only if they receive the minimum amount of paid registrations. No refunds will be given after the first night of class.
Book Information: All classes use the Signing Naturally Units 1-6 book. Purchase of the book is highly recommended as the teachers regularly use it for
class instruction and homework. Cost of the book is $75, and can be ordered at time of registration via the registration form, or purchased on the first
night of any ASL 1.1 class. This book is used for all levels, Beginner 1.1-1.4.
