Still they are not quite sure. So,
another proof, a striking proof: “Do
you have anything here to eat?” They
do indeed; they have just broiled
some fish. And Luke says so simply,
“They offered him a piece; he took it
and ate it in front of them” (vv. 42-43).

Today’s Gospel is worth looking at
closely.
It begins with the two
disciples rushing back from Emmaus
and telling “the Eleven and their
companions what had happened on
the road, and how [Jesus] had been
made known to them in the breaking
of the bread” (Lk 24:33).
Then Jesus appears to all of these.
Notice how the appearance to the two
on the road to Emmaus and the new
appearance to the disciples gathered
together in Jerusalem are very
similar. In each case Jesus appears
and the disciples do not recognise
him; in each case he instructs them
by way of the Scriptures; in each
case there is a meal that Jesus
himself takes; and he departs from
them.
Luke’s account of Jesus’ appearance
to his followers in Jerusalem
reassures his readers that what the
Church was teaching about Jesus
was true. Well, it begins with doubt,
with fear: the people in that house
are terrified; they think they are
seeing a ghost. It may look like
Jesus, but it cannot be; they have
seen him die. And remember, there
had to be something different about
the risen Jesus, about his body that
could pass through closed doors.
So what does Jesus do, simply to
make it evident to his disciples that
he is the same person they had come
to know before Calvary?
First,
believe your senses: “Look at my
hands and my feet and see that it is
really I. Touch me and see; no ghost
has flesh and bones such as you see
that I have” (Lk 24:39).
Then, as with the disciples on the
read to Emmaus, Jesus gives them a
short course in Scripture: the Pentateuch, the Psalms, the prophets.
“He opened their minds to understand
the Scriptures,” made it clear to them
from the Word of God that he had to
die, had to rise, and that forgiveness
was to be “preached in his name to all
the
nations,
beginning
from
Jerusalem” (vv. 44-47).
And finally, a significant short
sentence: “You are witnesses of all
of this (v. 48). Not only have they
experienced all this; their task in the
Period of the Church is to testify to it.
Not only witness: bear witness! Not
only see; proclaim!
Not only
experience; let the world know what
you have experienced!
Your task and mine, our vocation in
virtue of our baptism, confirmation
and communion with Jesus is not
significantly different from that of
Jesus’ early disciples. Proclaim the
risen Jesus, bear witness to him, tell
the world what you have experienced!
At times with our lips, more frequently
by our lives.
St. William’s Parish Council has been
wrestling with what to be and think
and do as an evangelising parish.
One small project is to “sell our
product” better in the market place.
So watch for the “Catholic Tent” at
fetes and markets where our parish
groups can get a plug to display their
work and have people present to
answer questions and respond to
enquiries.
We have the best news to sell—”we
are witnesses to this!”
STOP PRESS: “There is movement at the station”, the word has come! Fr. Robert
Doohan has been asked to go as Parish Priest to Geebung, to begin there around May
23rd. All the best Robert and thanks for your ministry among us this last year and a bit.
Fr. Peter Gong, currently Upper Mt. Gravatt will come to us around the same time.
From mainland China and incardinated into Brisbane Archdiocese, he will eventually
serve the Chinese Catholic Community, but will have good experience among us of
Aussie Parish Life. We welcome him too. He will live at Mitchelton but serve all our
communities.

All welcome to a Fair
Trade Morning Cuppa,
Sunday 26 April
- after 9.30am Mass at St William's
Grovely and;
- after 8.00am Mass at Samford
We often drink tea & coffee and eat
chocolate without giving a lot of thought
to who produces it and what they get
paid for their labour. For us in Brisbane
to buy fair trade products like coffee or
chocolate means farmers in Africa, Timor
Lesté and elsewhere, receive fair prices
and are able to operate sustainably and
reinvest in their communities. We, the
tea/coffee aficionados, the chocolate
lovers, have the opportunity to help
alleviate poverty rather than perpetuate
systems that exploit and oppress
communities.
Leading up to Fair Trade Fortnight, 8–22
May, The Social Justice Group is
promoting fair trade by selling/serving
coffee, tea and selling chocolate. A gold
coin donation would be appreciated.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Try buying fair trade not
just throughout Fair Trade
Fortnight, but as often as
you can:
Where to buy fair trade? Oxfam Shop
and The Good Shepherd Trading Circle
in Paddington both sell fairtrade goods.
Local supermarkets sell fairtrade coffee
and chocolate, as do many local cafés.

to find out more locations.

You may have heard that
Pope Francis has declared
next year as a
Year of Jubilee.
The jubilee, called the Holy Year of
Mercy, will begin on this year's feast of
the Immaculate Conception (Dec. 8) and it
will close on Nov. 20, 2016, the feast of
Christ the King.
Note, once again, the Pope’s heavy
emphasis on the importance of MERCY,
both from God to us and from us to others.
Remember – it was the theme of this
year’s Lent program as we prepared for
the coming of peace, joy and hope as
Jesus rose from the dead. Alleluia! Good
News.
On the AFE website, www.stwilliamsafe.com you will find a link to an article
which is a summary of Pope Francis’
proclamation of the “Holy Year of Mercy”,
issued recently.

True, it is a long summary but is much
better than reading right through the
original document of 9500 words. So
many of the phrases here are just what we
have come to expect of Pope Francis’s
refreshing ideas since he became Pope.
He sees the concept of “mercy” as right at
the heart of what Jesus refers to so often
as “The Kingdom of God”.
Speaking of “The Kingdom of God”, Kevin
Treston will talk on this topic in May, at a
date to be finalised.
Just what does this phrase actually mean?

WE’VE STARTED: Phil Kelly and his building team have begun work on
the under presbytery gathering space. So far the space has been cleared
and removed. Some excavation will happen next and eventually lead to
10m x 10m space for our gathering.
As it is a building site, we need take watchful care as the Church and school is
approached. The toilet under the presbytery is currently in use but not for long. There
is a toilet and wash basin in the sacristy behind the sanctuary and access can be made
along the back verandah via side door of the church (near Reconciliation Chapel) and
then into the sacristy. N.B. Could sacristans ensure that the door is unlocked when
the Church is being used (and lock it after community use). Parking on site will not be
possible during construction—12 weeks is allowed for, 8 weeks is hoped for.
Thank you for your patience.
