4th Sunday of Easter
26th April 2015
This Sunday of Easter—
Good Shepherd Sunday,
people like myself can be
decidedly uncomfortable
reading the gospel; for
who is the hired hand of
today’s gospel; just whom
does Jesus have in mind?

Quite
obviously,
the
religious leaders of his
own day. Jesus seems to be saying
that the religious leadership of his day
cares very little for the people. They
are not likely to defend the people
against danger. Most certainly they
will not sacrifice their lives for the
people. But before we start pointing
the finger at the Jewish leadership in
first century Palestine, we need to
reflect on what this image of the
Good Shepherd is saying to us today.
Leaders in today’s world, and also in
the church, can become so immersed
in administration and auxiliary stuff
that they lose touch with the very
people they are called to serve. An
old Talmudic riddle asks, ‘Why did the
Tower of Babel crumble?’ And the
answer is, ‘Because the leaders of
the project were more interested in
the work than they were in the
workers.’ God destroyed the Tower,
not because they were trying to reach
heaven, but because they were more
interested in bricks than bricklayers.
Leadership needs a human
face, sensitive, not hasty to
judgment, respectful of every
human in every encounter.
Isn’t this the provocative
leadership style of Francis of
Rome “who am I to judge”
was his reply to the
searching question of sexual
identity.
His presence
intrigues the world.
This Sunday challenges us to
evaluate our leadership—in the
family, our workplace and social
organisations, be it Local, State or
Federal Governments—and in our
Church. Francis is having a fair crack
at the centuries old and moribund
organisations of the Church—the
Roman Curia.
We have new
leadership in State Government too.
So it is a day too to evaluate effective
leadership—secular and religious.
It’s Good Shepherd Sunday. Pray for
leaders—Premiers, Prime Ministers,
Lord Mayors, bosses and all the rest.
Pray for pastors and pastoral workers
and all Church workers—that Christ
be our way—no short cuts! Pray for
vocations in the church for good and
many pastoral leaders, ordained and
lay—for our current and future needs.
Pray for one another that we all
pastor, lead and serve in the only way
that gives life—care for each and
every one.
We have 180 youngsters who have been preparing in parish and home by the Parish
Sacramental Team and parents. Now is the appropriate time post Easter for the
completion of their Sacramental Initiation in Confirmation & First Communion.
Bishop Joe Oudeman will be out on Friday evening to Confirm in two sessions, our
youngsters. Bishop Joe normally pastors the Southern Region parishes, so we
welcome him here for the first time. Originally a Capuchin friar, he was involved in
teaching, formation and spirituality with his Order as well as Provincial Leader for
Australia. He was ordained for assistant bishop, Brisbane, a dozen years ago.
In the following two weekends at eleven Masses, our 180 will complete their initiation
with First Communion.
Older parishioners have offered prayer support and
encouraging words to our youngsters as Prayer Partners.
So let’s all pray for our young. We will invoke the empowering Spirit to be their Helper
and Guide, to give them Wisdom and Understanding, the spirit of Right Judgment and
Courage, the spirit of Knowledge and Reverence, the spirit of Wonder and Awe in the
presence of God. Lord feed them again and again with your Body and Blood—that
they may grow more intensely into the life you offer them and that they and all of us will
be your World Wide Witnesses.

We often drink tea & coffee and eat
chocolate without giving a lot of thought
to who produces it and what they get
paid for their labour. Fairtrade is about
better prices, decent working conditions,
local sustainability, and fair terms of
trade for farmers and workers in the
developing world. So, by supporting
Fairtrade, we support the people who
deserve to benefit.
Leading up to Fair Trade Fortnight, 8–
22 May, The Social Justice Group is
promoting fair trade by serving coffee &
tea and selling chocolate. A gold coin
donation would be appreciated and as
we will be serving coffee from Timor
Leste you may care to make a donation
for our Sister Parish in Liquica at the
same time!
But don’t just buy fair trade during Fair
Trade Fortnight, but as often as you can.
Where to buy fair trade? The Oxfam
Shop and The Good Shepherd Trading
Circle in Paddington both sell Fairtrade
goods. Most local supermarkets sell
Fairtrade coffee and chocolate, as do
many local cafés. Check out http://

locations.

God has no past or present.
Hence the best type of spirituality, since
we are all part of the “Kingdom of God”,
is to live in the present. That is the place
where we will always find God.
We don’t have to go looking for him –
just be aware of him in you, in others and
in all creation. This is contemplation and
it is so simple.
Coming event – “The Kingdom of
God” will be the title of a presentation
given by Dr. Kevin Treston in the
Daley Centre on Tuesday May 19 at
7.30 pm.
This concept is at the core of the
message Jesus brought to us from his
loving and merciful Father but what does
it really mean?
The term "Kingdom of God" occurs four
times in Matthew, fourteen times in
Mark, thirty-two times in Luke, twice in
the Gospel of John, six times in Acts,
eight times in Paul, and once in
Revelation (12:10). Matthew actually
prefers the term "Kingdom of Heaven"
which he uses over 20 times in his
gospel.
Kevin is a gifted exponent of the
Scriptures, having studied it and
explained it to thousands of people over
many years, both here and overseas. A
night not to be missed.
