ALPHA/BETA MAX
RECLAIMED SAND ADDITIVE ABM-602
ALPHA/BETA MAX 602 (patent applied for) is a liquid/solid additive used with the
ALpHASET Systems and the BETASET Process to increase rebonding strengths on
reclaimed sands obtained from the ALpHASET/BETASET cores or molds.
ABM-602 will allow the consistent use of high addition rates of reclaimed sand.
ABM-602 helps the ALpHASET System or BETASET Process to rebond reclaimed sands. The
performance value increases as the level of reclaimed sand mixed with new sand increases.
Operational levels are from approximately 60% to 90% reclaimed sand.
Reclaimed Sand
Successful reclamation of ALpHASET or BETASET bonded sands is possible with existing
reclamation processes. Dry attrition, pneumatic scrubbing or thermal units, either individually or
in combination, can provide adequate treatment to allow for consistently high levels of sand
reuse. Control of the reclamation process must be monitored by testing the reclaimed sand.
Screen analysis, LOI and tensile strength tests should be used to monitor the reclaimed sand
system.
New Sand Addition
New sand should be added to the system in a manner to maintain a constant reclaimed/new sand
blend.
ABM-602 Use Levels
ABM-602 is typically used at 0.2% t o 0.6% on the weight of the sand. The determining factors
are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Quality of reclaimed sand
Reclaimed levels used
Rebond strengths desired
Quality of the sand mixers
Each foundry may require different levels, determined after the foundry is reclaiming
ALpHASET or BETASET and has accomplished several cycles of reclamation.

Mixer Addition of the ALpHA/BETA MAX
There are several techniques for the addition of ABM-602 into continuous mixers. The
techniques are detailed in order of preference.
1. Precoating the Sand: Introduce the material to the sand stream prior to resin/hardener
sequence. For closed tube, high-speed mixers, air assist may be necessary to insure good
mixing.
2. Twin Screw Mixers: We recommended that the ALpHA/BETA MAX is introduced to both
sides of the mixer prior to the addition of the ALpHASET and ALpHACURE components or
the BETASET resin.
3. Muller or Batch Mixers: The preferential technique is to add the ALpHA/BETA MAX first
and employ a short mixing time, followed by resin.
Pumps and Hoses
ALpHA/BETA MAX 602 is an aqueous suspension; therefore most existing pumping systems
currently approved for foundry use can be utilized. It is recommended that the pump is sufficient
in accuracy to insure adequate metering of the material.
Storage and Handling
ALpHA/BETA MAX 602 is non flammable. The product should be handled properly utilizing
approved chemical safety equipment. The product is supplied in open head steel drums. Consult
the product Material Safety Data Sheet for specific information as well as the Technical Data
Sheet for information. Avoid freezing conditions.

Application Theory
The ALpHA/BETA MAX is a rebond strength echancer for reclaimed ALpHASET System and
BETASET Process sand. As such, its performance value increases as the level of reclaimed sand
increases. In order to optimize its use, it should be added at approximately 0.6% on sand weight
while maximizing the amount of reclaimed sand used. Once the highest level of reclaimed sand
is achieved, a programmed reduction in the additive amount should be undertaken until the
minimum tensile for any particular operation. In summation, maximize the reclaimed sand level
first, and then minimize the additive level to achieve desired rebond strengths while keeping the
resin/hardener levels constant.
NOTE: It is important to premix the ALpHA/BETA MAX 602 prior to use and during
use. Without mixing, settling of the solids will occur.
Thermal Reclamation
ALpHA/BETA MAX 602 has been successfully tested in most thermal reclamation units
resulting in excellent rebonding strengths. It is recommended to add the ALpHA/BETA MAX
602 prior to the sand entering the reclamation unit starting at 0.6% B.O.S.
The use of ALpHA/BETA MAX 602 is non-hazardous and non-corrosive making it very
user/equipment friendly. There are no acids or alkalies in the product.
It is important to work with HA International’s technical department when considering thermal
reclamation in order to maximize the benefits.
