Swan Harbor Farm
M
ajestically overlooking the Chesapeake Bay in Havre
de Grace sits Swan Harbor Farm, keeping a silent
vigil over the passing of ships and time since the late
1600's. The farm acquired its name when the 500 acre property
was granted to William Palmer in 1675. There is evidence that the
earliest part of the house dates back to the 1740's and was only
one of the buildings on this working farm. The property changed
hands several times and each new family nurtured and grew the
farm. A notice of property for sale in The Aegis is a wonderful
description of how much the farm had grown over 150 years later:
Public Auction on Tuesday Feb. 18, 1879. Valuable Farm - 550 acres more
or less. Railroad passes through farm at Oakington Station. 450 acres under high
cultivation and very fertile producing wheat, corn, oats & hay. The rest of the farm is
timber - oak, chestnut & locust. Well fenced and well adapted for grazing, tracking
or dairy purposes or peach farm. Brick and frame house is divided into 14 rooms.
New frame building used for servants quarters. A large Swilzer barn, stable, carriage
house, wagon shed, 2 granaries, corn house, milk house, barracks, poultry house &
yard, ice house. Flour and grist mill powered by a bold stream. Cottage for miller.
Assortment of fruit trees - pears, peaches, apples, grapes & family garden. 1 mile of
waterfront - landing for vessels. Shad and herring fisheries. One of the most desirable
farms in the county!
The property was sold, and life went on at the farm, until its
final owner, John Kenney gifted the estate to Johns Hopkins
University in 1986. Harford County Parks & Recreation
bought the property from the University in 1994, and Swan
Harbor Farm was re-born.
Open to the public from dawn to dusk, Swan Harbor Farm
is a nature lover's paradise and a favorite for brides who want
to incorporate natural beauty into their wedding day. The long
driveway leading to the main building is flanked on both sides
by fields of crops and is a haven for birds. Photographers are
commonly seen dotting the side of the lane, capturing the geese
and other birds that are feeding there. Parking is a breeze in a
large grassy lot adjacent to a rustic barn. As you head for the
main house, crossing through a line of trees... the landscape
unfurls in all its glory. The main house is to your right,
overlooking the expansive lawn, the path leading to the dock
and the breathtaking view of the water.
Swan Harbor Farm specializes in outdoor weddings. From the
front lawn where ceremonies are held, you follow the walkway
5

where you discover a formal garden, complete with fountain and a secluded area for
seating. Continuing through the gardens privacy hedge, you come upon the huge
reception tent complete with chandeliers and stamped concrete floor. The open sides of
the tent provide 360 degree views of the grounds and the Chesapeake Bay. A winding
paved walkway leads down to the 300 foot fishing pier and the gazebo perched along
the edge of the water. A charming brick patio is ideal for guests and bridal party during
cocktail hour.
Not to be outdone by the natural beauty of the landscape, the farmhouse exudes a quiet
elegance reflecting the grandeur of a bygone era. Completely refinished with modern
amenities, the beautiful interior gives a nod to the home's historic past. The first floor
of the house offers three restrooms, a large commercial kitchen for the caterer's use and
many uniquely decorated rooms. The second floor offers dressing rooms for the bridal
party, two additional restrooms, a children's playroom and a screened porch with a
magnificent water view. Seating in the house is limited to 70 guests, but the outdoor
tent boasts seating for 250 people.
"This is just a good for your soul kind of place. We've had generations of women from
the same family who come here to get married. The place is just so alive," said Karen
Tegges, Event Coordinator for Swan Harbor Farm. "Brides who are attracted to Swan
Harbor, tend to be down to earth, and really appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds
us here," she added. Karen is dedicated to making brides' dreams come true on their big
day. "I encourage our brides to create an experience that is all about them. Just because
something is commonly done... doesn't mean they have to do it that way. It's those
quirky little things that people remember and creates lasting memories," said Karen.
You don't have to be a bride to enjoy Swan Harbor Farm. Business meetings and
retreats, anniversary parties and more are hosted here. If you're not in the mood for a
party ...but are attracted to the natural beauty, Swan Harbor Farm is part of our park
system and is open almost every day to visitors. "This place is always accessible to our
brides... it's always their special place and couples come back with their children and
dogs in tow to take a walk through the gardens and enjoy the day," Karen said. "I don't
think it gets more romantic than that."

3Harford STYLE Winter 20154
G
lyph in Havre de Grace, isn't your grandmother's stationary store. Owners, Don Starr and Joe Smith
have a clear style and particular point of view. The brightly lit shop invites customers to browse, and
the quirky selection of cards, gifts, exotic papers, stationary and accessories keeps them coming back
for more. Don and Joe's concept was simple... everything needed to have a graphic type element, bold
fonts - hence the name "glyph". The compilation of products reflects a style that I can only describe
as uniquely their own. "We find things that we appreciate, and hope that others will appreciate it too. We are always
looking for something new that can't be found anywhere else," said Don.
So where did their passion for type come from? Don, a graphic designer, is the Graphic Design Coordinator in the
School of Art at George Mason University. While working on his Integrated Design MFA thesis at the University of
Baltimore he came upon the long-held practice of letterpress printing. This method of printing involves a relief process,
which utilizes raised metal type and engravings to imprint words and designs on a page. Letterpress originated in the
1400s and was the primary form of printing and communication for more than 500 years. Over time letterpress has
been replaced as the industrial favorite and has evolved into more of an art form. Letterpress has been rising in popularity
in recent years due to it's appealing tactile quality in comparison to current offset and digital printing methods.
Don and Joe own two refurbished presses and several drawers of
type, although they don't do any printing in house. "Late this spring,
we will have the presses up and running in the new studio behind
the retail store where we will be doing custom letterpress printing. In
fact, we will be offering a package where the happy couple can have
a hands-on experience, printing their own invitations, with our help
and guidance," smiled Don. Not all of their products are produced
by letterpress... but that style is strongly carried out through their
whole shop. Their collection of greeting cards is one-of-a-kind.
They have as many sympathy cards for pets as they do for people...
and if you are looking for a card for a friend, you are bound to find
one that will make you both laugh out loud.
Glyph owners, Don Starr (standing)
& Joe Smith
Their handcrafted paper is one of the things that keeps me going
back. Italian art prints and rich fabric like sheets from a women's
cooperative in Nepal sport vivid colors and can be used for so much
more than wrapping. I use them for crafting, but the possibilities are
endless "A lot of people frame them and use them as art," said Don.
A wide variety of gifts, all fitting into their stationary theme, are displayed in the modern feeling shop. Scrabble mugs,
field journals, Italian stationary, tobacco jars, locally made candles (that smell amazing), cocoa and teas (with letterpress
labels) and a really cool line of retro writing instruments are among Glyph's gift selection. They even have gifts for
children... like postcards with cool designs to color, or a pad of placemats to doodle on - one of their most popular
sellers. They also carry some rather obscure stationary supplies, like Blackwing pencils. These pencils have a long history,
and are popular today with professionals like engineers. I had to know what was so special about this pencil... so Joe
pulled one out and I gave it a try. I was surprised to find that it was the nicest pencil I had ever written with. It's hard
to describe why... all I can say is if you are someone who commonly uses a pencil, try it and you won't be disappointed
Off to the right is Joe's domain. This room is dedicated to custom invitations. Glyph offers invitations for any occasion,
but weddings are their most common request. Joe deftly grabs a few albums and spreads them on the table before us.
"There is a huge amount of creativity out there when it comes to wedding invitations," said Joe. "Many brides have a
vague idea, but browsing through all the examples, really helps them determine what they want," he added. One of
his favorite invitation vendors right now is Kleinfelds (from Say Yes to the Dress). I can see why... each example is more
beautiful than the next. Armed with albums of invitations, Joe also has the know-how to help his brides customize
their invitations to suit their style and budget. "We have so many paper and color options to choose from, and really
interesting packaging options, it's not hard to create a custom look," explained Joe. If you really want to go completely
custom, Don is on hand to create something that's just for you.

ill Andrews, doesn't work in Harford County, but
if you are looking for a custom gown, it's worth the
drive to Hampden. Her beautiful studio streams
with light from the huge windows surrounding
the spacious workroom. It's apparent at first glance that
this is more than a showroom... actual work is going
on here. Sewing machines, scattered with scissors and
bobbins and work tables covered with gowns in progress
sit among the racks of beautiful gowns and bolts of
exotic fabrics. Sparkly trim, pearls and sequins line the
shelves and warm wood makes the space feel welcoming.
Jill's personality is as sunny as her workroom, and her

having a singular vision as to what wedding gowns were
supposed to look like - to being exposed to a whole world
of design, cultural influences, historical influences, and it
made me a better designer," said Jill.
After she graduated she moved to London and began
her career as a wedding gown designer, eventually
finding her way to Baltimore in 1992. Jill had a second
job at Center Stage for fifteen years, as the draper. It
was her job to take a designer's 2-d sketch and turn it
into a three dimensional costume... draping the fabric,
making the patterns and overseeing the construction
and choice of materials. "Working in the theatre really
opened my eyes as a wedding designer. I went from
website that showcases each piece.
"As far as my personal style, I like to push classic. I want
to create the fantastical version of who my clients are,"
smiled Jill. She gets to know all her design clients and uses
them as her muse to create something really special. Jill's
assistant Mia pulled an example from the rack. It certainly
didn't look like any wedding dress I had seen before. The
tattered pale blue silk cascaded to the floor, the seeming
randomness, too elegant to be anything other than clever

hile driving down a very long gravel road to meet with Sarah,
I approach a peaceful and beautiful stone haven smack dab
in the middle of a breathtaking wide open area of land. The
rustic stone home's natural surroundings would obviously
inspire anyone’s creative gifts and talents. As for Sarah, her creativity flows
from her quiet place... an addition to the house where the natural sunlight
bursts through the huge picture window and warming rays illuminate her
wood writing desk, becoming part of the beautiful scenery.
I was welcomed by Sarah’s home even before I met Sarah herself and they
are a perfect fit. She is as peaceful and serene as the calligraphy artworks that
she creates. Sarah shares her two hundred year old stone farmhouse with
her busy family. Creating balance between her roles as a mother, teacher
and artist is a challenge every day. Sarah considers healthy vegetarian
eating and the practice of yoga essential to maintaining this balance.
Watercolor painting, drawing, quilting, photography, and interior design
are several of Sarah's artistic pursuits. Her passion for words and lettering
has often been part of those art forms. Calligraphy started as a hobby
and has evolved for 25 years into a growing business for Sarah. Clients
commission Sarah to design collages, menus, poems, song lyrics, baby
announcements, signs and certificates, but the majority of her business
comes from brides and grooms. Sarah adds her personal touch of creative
hand lettering to everything from custom designed invitations to place
cards to programs, but is most commonly hired to address envelopes in
one of 4 lettering styles that can be viewed on her website.
Her calligraphy journey began back in the late 80’s in Charlottesville, VA.
Early in her teaching career, she was approached by her friend who was
getting married and wanted Sarah to do her wedding invitations. Sarah's
artwork has often combined lettering and written passages with color and
images, which Sarah says stems from her passion for reading. Instead of a
brush, her calligraphy is created with a Speedball calligraphy pen that uses
interchangeable nibs and colored ink cartridges. I was dazzled and inspired
by her demonstration of lettering an envelope as part of a current project
for a soon-to-be-bride.
Sarah's career as an art teacher gives her the opportunity to share her
artistic knowledge. As one of five art teachers at Perry Hall Middle School
in Baltimore County, she encourages her 6th, 7th and 8th grade students
to discover their unique abilities to build, imagine, create and refine skills
in various art media. Sarah herself attended schools in Kingsville and Perry
Hall and graduated from James Madison University. She later obtained
her Master's of Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University
in Richmond. Ever since, she has been sharing art with students at all age
levels from preschool to adult and in various settings from public school art
rooms to private lessons. A future endeavor includes teaching calligraphy
and drawing through the Community College of Baltimore County.
In a time of advancing technology where anyone can go to a computer
and select a font, there is still a need for the eye of an artist and still the
desire for the beauty of something hand made. To connect with Sarah,
to see more samples or to arrange calligraphy services, please visit her
website at www.sarahdeacon.com. Contact her at [email protected]

Harford County Style
When it comes to weddings... Harford County has it all. Our incredible natural
landscape includes serene waterfronts, rolling hills and rustic barns. For more
cosmopolitan brides, our upscale venues have all the glitz, glam and quite
often history to make their wedding an unforgettable experience.
To fully realize a bride's vision might require the assistance of an experienced
wedding planner. Even DIY brides find their help invaluable when it comes
to advice, time management and organization. When working with a
wedding planner, the most important thing to look for is someone who
"gets you". Wedding planners are creative types and they embrace brides with a
quirky or unique sense of style. The trick is communicating what's in your head.
Try to keep it simple. We paired up three wedding
planners and 3 photographers... gave each pair a 1 phrase
description of our vision and let them work
their magic!

Unplugged Weddings:
Working Together to
Create a Comfortable Experience
On the flip side, with the prevalence of social media, it is fun to go back and see the
wedding day through the guest's eyes while visiting the couple's hashtag on Instagram,
or browsing the tagged images on their Facebook pages. Wedding invitations are sent
to carefully selected friends and family members who have been a special part of the
couple's lives. They are loved ones whom the couple want to share their wedding day
with. The guests arrive with eagerness to celebrate and document the day out of the
love and excitement they share for the bride and groom. Even if they're not professional
photographers, they still deserve the opportunity to capture these special moments. If I
were a guest at a wedding, it would definitely be hard for me to not snap a quick photo
of the beautiful flower arrangements, the breathtaking bride in her gorgeous gown, and
of course- the kiss! Speaking from the heart of not just a professional photographer but
of a simple chick with a love for photography and people, I completely understand the
want to take photos during the course of the day and would feel a little disappointment
if I wasn't allowed that opportunity.

L
ike beauty, fashion, and music, weddings have trends
of their own. From pink peonies, to chalkboards and
vintage milk jars, brides get inspired by other local
brides, wedding blogs, magazines, and of course, Pinterest. One of the
latest trends in the wedding world is to have an "unplugged wedding".
This concept involves the bride and groom kindly requesting that
their guests refrain from taking photos of any kind during the course
of the wedding day. In my opinion, there are some really good reasons
to allow your guests to freely capture the day, but of course as a
professional photographer, I must admit that being the only one with
a camera is pretty sweet too. Ultimately, it's the couple's decision.
It is important for me to educate my bride and groom on the
value of creating a distraction free environment so that they feel
calm, relaxed, and natural on their wedding day. I remind them
of the option to have an "unplugged" wedding and educate
them on the ways the other guests might unintentionally hinder
the comfortable flow of different aspects of the day by taking
photographs. For example, in an echoey church with high ceilings
or even outside in a wide open field ceremony, cameras and
phones can be noisy, especially if there are many of them working
at once. A guest can also be very distracting by standing up and
leaning into the aisle to get a shot of the adorable flower girl, and
in a dark environment, flashes have a potential to off-set my own
image exposure or cause a weird color cast in my photograph. Of
course not all of these things happen at every "non-unplugged"
wedding, but my clients need to know that the potential is there,
and how my images could be affected.
As professional photographers, we need to work with our environment and go with
the flow of any given situation. I have more of a photojournalistic style, so I capture
whatever is happening before me. So, if guests are taking photos with their phones and
cameras as the couple walks down the aisle for the first time as Mr. and Mrs., I plan to
capture that right along with the newlyweds' smiling faces! If I just need to get a little
closer towards the couple, use a longer lens to blur out some of those distractions, or
if possible, simply move to get a different angle, I will. If a guest is hindering my view
of the subject or simply being too distracting while photographing over my shoulder, I
will just ask them to kindly step back while I do what I am getting paid to do. We are
artists, not magicians, and Uncle Bob along with his point and shoot and tripod can't
always just be "Photoshopped" out. There's always going to be that person who wants
to take every single group image on their point and shoot camera right alongside me. I
am very easy going but also take my job seriously and have no problem doing anything
and everything I can to make the experience for my couple comfortable and natural.
If this means making an announcement asking every single person to please go and
sample the signature drink and bacon-wrapped shrimp while I complete the portrait
portion of the day, then that's what I need to do. There's nothing that frustrates me
more than having my subjects' eyes on different lenses while I try to take group formals.
This is an important part of our job description and something we should work hard to
make flow seamlessly and in an organized fashion. As photographers, we need to make
sure we have a good relationship with our couples so they trust us to control this part
of the day, and we need to step up and take that control. Do what needs to be done to
get that perfect image.
The love I have for my couples is what drives my passion to photograph for them and
do it well. They are who I answer to and consider first and foremost. So with them as
my priority, whatever makes them happy makes me happy too. But for them to be
"photographically happy", they first need to be educated. This might be the umpteenth
wedding I have photographed, but it's a brand new process for them, so my experience
and knowledge about these things needs to be expressed and explained so they get
the over all "picture". Photographers and couples should be open with each other
during the planning process and share the expectations they have to make the wedding
day experience successful. The real focus should be on the love and celebration of the
marriage, "unplugged" wedding or not! It is the love shared between the bride and
groom, along with the brightness and blessing of their future that is most important.

Should You Consider
Weight Loss Surgery?
How
do you
know if
weight
Many people have heard about weight loss (bariatric) surgery and how it can help those who struggle
with obesity to see faster results and often, improve some weight related health conditions such as
diabetes, high blood pressure, severe arthritis and more. It’s important to remember that weight loss
surgery is a big decision and requires lifestyle changes in order the maintain the weight loss successfully
for a life time. If you follow the expected behavior modifications involving healthy meal plans and
exercise, you can have extremely satisfying results.
loss
Upper Chesapeake Bariatric Surgery is a patient-focused and compassionate center for people considering
weight loss surgery. Since 2006 this personalized program has been accredited by the American College of
Surgeons as a comprehensive Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence for meeting identified
national standards of care and having excellent short- and long-term results. The multidisciplinary team
approach ensures care from the perspective of the “whole patient” involving nutrition, mental health
and activity. Our professional team focuses on ways to succeed with permanent weight loss over time.
1.Talk with your doctor about the
benefits versus the risks for you.
2.The weight loss from the surgery also
helps improve other conditions
including Type 2 diabetes, severe
arthritis, sleep apnea, high blood
pressure and more.
3.Weight loss surgery, like all surgery,
carries some risk and it’s a big
decision. Do your homework.
Make sure the programs you are
considering offer a support program
that can help you prepare for the
lifestyle changes you will need to
make to be successful.
4.Information sessions are very
informative and help you meet the
people that manage the program.
Go to one and ask lots of questions.
People who have had to deal with the realities of the chronic disease of morbid obesity know all too well
the many challenges of day to day life. While these challenges, such as simply walking, buying clothes or
looking for a place to sit are important, our focus is on helping to save you from this truly life threatening
illness. Significant weight loss can positively impact all aspects of obesity. The goal is to live better and
healthier. You may be told by some that you are trying to take the easy way out. Don't be fooled for a
second, for you are beginning a difficult, lifelong journey that is not for everyone!
The Upper Chesapeake Bariatric Program is offered through the University of Maryland Harford
Memorial Hospital and is committed to providing patients with the most current and accurate
information possible to ensure that their decision to undergo a weight loss procedure is an informed
one. A considerable amount of counseling, evaluation and consultation takes place with an experienced
bariatric surgeon and multi-disciplinary support team who will be involved in your care both before
surgery and in the years afterwards. Questions will be answered clearly and with exact details of the
procedure options available, the extent of the recovery period and the reality of the follow-up care that
will be required.
It is important to remember that there are no ironclad guarantees in any kind of medicine or surgery.
There can be unexpected outcomes in even the simplest procedures. It can be said, however, that weight
loss surgery will only succeed with a lifelong commitment from the patient. With surgery, risks are
taken initially in hopes of long term benefit and improved quality of life. Doing nothing about obesity
is associated with an increasing number of medical disabilities and a shortened lifespan. If you have
struggled for a long time with your weight, ask your doctor if weight loss surgery should be considered
for you. You won’t just change your life, you may very well save it.

ngela Mangione, owner of
Rusty Love Vintage Rentals,
has made dealing in antiques
chic and fashionable once
again. At a time when the younger generation
is embracing minimalism, Angela went in
the opposite direction and has amassed a
huge selection of eclectic vintage furniture.
Angela herself is as stylish as her furniture.
Creative and friendly she immediately
makes an impression.
Angela's original career plans had nothing
to do with antiques. Due to a series of
tragic losses among her friends and family,
Angela became interested in bereavement
counseling. From there her goal expanded to
owning her own funeral home. Her vision
was quite unique, wanting to create a space
where people could celebrate life, complete
with French furniture and a beautiful, airy
feeling. She studied Mortuary Science and
began working towards owning her own
new-age funeral home. Angela's dreams were
interrupted when she had trouble finding a

location for her new building. Fortunately,
her sisters came through with the inspiration
for a new business.
Her twin sisters are in the antique 'biz,
and own the Shabby Button in Kingsville.
Angela would reluctantly tag along with
her sisters to auctions and estate sales, but
it didn't take long before she was bitten by
the antiquing bug - specifically furniture
and cool accessories. At first there was no
business plan... Angela was collecting for
the joy of it. "Everything I bought was
something I loved... something I would
want to put in my home," smiled Angela.
Of course, before you know it, Angela had
way too much furniture for her own home
in Street, and began filling the garage and
outbuildings on her property. "It was like
organized hoarding," she said.
About this time, vintage furniture rental
was just starting to become popular on the
west coast, and Pinterest was in full swing.

Angela's is quite handy with tools, and has

to fixing up her purchases. "I will paint or

but when it comes to a more complicated piece
of furniture I would rather pay a professional,
and know that it was done right," she said.
"It's amazing how many pieces I find that are
perfect just the way they are... like the pink
sofa," Angela added.
Angela gravitates towards pieces that have
a story to tell. Her collection includes
Hollywood Regency, French, Industrial,
Shabby Chic, Mid Century, curvy antiques,
and pieces with modern appeal. One of her
most sought after pieces is the huge pink

Gone Girl
By: Gillian Flynn
Amy and Nick
Dunne are
celebrating
their fifth
wedding
anniversary
in rural
Missouri,
where they
recently
moved
to from Manhattan.
Amy is “Amazing Amy”; the main character in a series of
children’s books that her parents penned through her growing
up years. No expectations there!
It begins as a typical day -- breakfast of crepes for the happy
couple. But when Nick returns home later, the front door is
wide open and the living room is askew. In a panic, he runs
through the house to find his wife, but she is not there. She is
gone. The iron is on with a dress in mid-press and there is an
effort to clean up obvious blood on the kitchen floor.
The author chooses to alternate chapters with both Amy and
Nick narrating. Amy in diary form and Nick in a count from
the day she is discovered missing. A few suspects crop up but the
husband is always the most likely -- did he kill her? As the police
begin to investigate, they discover that things are not quite right
with the story Nick has given them. Things just don’t add up.
Their façade of the perfect marriage was very superficial.
her mind and decides she really isn’t willing to go that far. This
change in plan did not take into consideration how vulnerable
and dependent on others Amy has been forced to become. She
is an easy target for some street-savvy criminals, and in order
to escape them, she mistakenly turns to an old admirer. She
becomes the prisoner of an obsessed man and must once again
plan her escape. This scenario works in her favor as she can now
feign abduction and blame her gone-missing status on him. No
fact checking is necessary since she had to kill him to get away.
With no money and nowhere to go, Amy simply goes home.
There are many twists and turns to the story that reinforce how
one lie requires you to build on that lie over and over again.
There are also other life-lessons related to personal values,
morals, and ethics. In the end, Nick and Amy turn out to be
very well suited to one another and the reader will find that
they really do deserve each other. Sometimes when you burn
your bridges, you run out of choices. Then again, maybe Amy
just has a good imagination.
Recommendations: See the 2014 movie of the same name
starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. The screenplay was
also written by the author of the novel, Gillian Flynn, so they
run fairly true to each another. There are a few deviations
from the novel but reading and seeing it provide an interesting
perspective.
After our discussion, we gave Gone Girl 4 stars.
So, until next time ….
As the case against the husband builds, the reader discovers
what has actually happened to his wife, Amy. The poor little
rich girl has crafted an elaborate scheme to get away from her
life and frame her unfaithful husband at the same time. This
is revenge to the Nth degree as she is willing to even consider
suicide as the final act to complete the ruse. But, she changes

Natural Cleaning Solutions
n our quest for a healthy lifestyle, we often overlook the mundane
things like cleaning products, and the potentially harmful chemicals
they bring into our homes. While there are plenty of natural commercial
cleaning products on the market, effective natural cleaning solutions
are easy to whip up in your own kitchen using simple ingredients, many of
which you might already have on hand.
My first child often broke out in rashes. Our pediatrician diagnosed it as
contact dermatitis, a fancy way of saying she was having a reaction to things
that were touching her skin. This made me examine what was in our laundry
soap, the floor cleaner, the all-purpose spray I used around the house, and
many other chemicals I used for daily cleaning. It was a real eye opener that
led me to start exploring recipes for making my own natural home products.
As it turns out, homemade cleaning products are easy to mix and store, work just as well or better than the commercial brands, and cost pennies on the dollar. More
importantly, they give me the satisfaction that I am lessening the toxic load for my family and the environment. Many of the ingredients listed here are easy to find at
local supermarkets and box stores. For specialty items such as essential oils, you can find them at Karen’s Naturals in Havre de Grace or David’s Market in Forest Hill.
Please make sure to label all of your bottles. You might want to add a little food coloring as well for easy identification.

wine in style
Greetings
Wine Lovers
by Joe Lertch
This month we’re going to spend a little time talking about Dessert Wines…
those sweet, after dinner, wines that are typically served with dessert, or simply
by themselves as “liquid dessert”.
Here, in the USA, dessert wines are usually drunk after a main meal, with
dessert, or “as” dessert, and “dessert wines” are usually lumped together to
include anything that is “very” sweet… to include Late Harvest wines, Ice
wines, and Fortified (Port) wines. Winemakers of dessert wines are tasked with
producing wines containing high levels of both sugar and alcohol. Now there
are numerous ways to increase the level of sugar in the final wine: One way
is to grow grapes and leave them on the vine late in the growing season so
that their sugar levels rise high and they naturally have sugar to spare for both
sweetness and alcohol. Another way is to add sugar either before fermentation
or after fermentation. Yet another way is to add alcohol (usually grape brandy)
to kill the yeast and stop fermentation before all the sugar is fermented, leaving
abundant sugar and alcohol. (This is known as fortification, or “the fortifying
of a wine”.)
Another way is to remove water and concentrate the sugar in the grape:
1.In warm climates this is done by air drying the grapes to turn them
into raisins before pressing.
2.In frost climates this is done by freezing out some of the water to make
“Ice Wine”. Most “Ice Wine” laws require temperatures below 19 °F
before the grapes for ice wine can be picked. At such temperatures, some
of the water in the grapes freezes out, but the sugars remain dissolved in
the remaining juice. If the grapes are pressed while frozen, a very
concentrated “grape must” can result, which needs special yeast and a long
time to ferment. The resulting wines are very sweet, but with balanced
acidity. The very low grape yields mean they tend to be very expensive. The
most famous ice wines are German “Eiswein” and Canadian “Icewine”.
3.In damp climates removing water is done by using a fungal infection,
(Botrytis Cinerea), or what is referred to as “Noble Rot” to penetrate the
grape skins so internal water can evaporate. Some of the most famous “Noble
Rot” dessert wines, such as Château d'Yquem from the Sauternes region of
France are made from grapes that are moldy with the fungus “Botrytis
Cinerea”, which attacks the grape skin and sucks water out of the grape.
Making Sauternes wine is a risky waiting game. Not only must the grapes ripen
fully until near bursting with sugar, but farmers must also hope the weather
attains just the right balance of humidity and autumn breezes to produce
“Botrytis Cinerea”, whose spores attack the grapes, absorbing water, shriveling
skins and reducing healthy bunches to ghastly, desiccated masses. Out of this
ugliness comes rare beauty, gorgeously extravagant, honeyed wines in which
sweetness is balanced with acidity. At their best, they can age for many decades.
Fortified wine is wine to which a distilled spirit, usually grape brandy, is
added. There are many different styles of fortified wine including Port, Sherry,
Madeira, and Marsala. The original reason for fortifying wine was to preserve
it. Even though other preservation methods now exist, fortification continues
to be used because the process can add distinct flavors to the finished product.
Although grape brandy is most commonly added to produce fortified wines,
the additional alcohol may also be neutral spirit that has been distilled from
grapes, grain, sugar beets, or sugarcane.
When grape brandy is added to wine before the fermentation process is
complete, the alcohol in the distilled beverage kills the yeast and leaves residual
sugar behind. The end result is a wine that is both sweet and stronger in alcohol,
normally containing about 20% alcohol.
Serving:
A general rule is that sweet wine should be served with sweet desserts, although
a perfectly ripe peach has been described as an ideal partner for many dessert
wines. Crème Brulee and custard based dishes also work well with “white grape”
based dessert wines such as Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon wines, Late
Harvest Gewurztraminers, and Ice Wines.
Red dessert wines like Late Harvest Zinfandel and Late Harvest Monastrell
work well with some chocolates, and Port and Port-like wines like being
matched with blue cheeses and walnuts. Quite often, the wine itself can be a
dessert, but bakery sweets can make a good match also.
White dessert wines are generally served somewhat chilled, but can be easily
served cold, while Red dessert wines are served at room temperature or
slightly chilled.
So grab your favorite dessert, and/or a glass
of dessert wine, and have a big time!
Salute!

Essential Money
Topics to Discuss
Before Marriage
SMART MONEY
By Bronwyn L. Martin
Financial Advisor
Chartered Financial Consultant®
with Ameriprise Financial Services
When couples tie the knot, they make a commitment to stand by one another, for richer or poorer.
Despite this earnest vow, money is a common source of marital strife at all economic levels. Money
is so central to our daily lives that conflicting financial beliefs and behaviors can spill into all areas
of married life.
Communication is key to avoiding surprises, promoting cooperation and creating harmony in your
new financial life together. Before reciting your marriage vows, take time to understand the state of
your pending economic union. A joint household will fare better when both of you are open and
honest about all of your money matters. As you learn more about yourself and one another, you’ll be
better able to manage your own expectations and respect the choices of your new spouse.
Here are three money topics that deserve discussion before you walk down the aisle:
1. What does money mean to you?
This is a big, broad question, but it can uncover what’s at the heart of many financial disagreements.
Examining closely held beliefs about money is a healthy part of personal development. You can assess
your financial values by answering smaller questions like these: Do you equate money with success?
Is your bank account a measure of your mood or self-worth? Do you prefer to spend or save? Is it
ever okay to borrow money? What’s your philosophy about giving?
Explore where your thinking differs and try to find common ground. The value you each attach
to money will affect how much time you dedicate to earning, how much you set aside for the
future and how you approach spending. In a similar way, what you believe about gender roles and
responsibilities can influence your financial behavior and what you expect from your partner.
Different personal beliefs about money can cause rifts between couples because they are so deeply
ingrained and personal. It may help to realize how your earliest experiences shaped your money
mindset. For example, if you grew up poor, you may be anxious about even small expenditures.
Acknowledging this concern can diminish its power to overtake common sense. Likewise, if you
grew up in a wealthy home, you may spend without a care in the world, even when your bank
account does not match your lifestyle. Recognizing this trait in yourself might compel you to adopt
a more disciplined approach to spending. Try to be more self-aware of how your attitudes and beliefs
affect your actions and remain open to fresh perspectives that foster rewarding financial behaviors.
2. What’s your financial history: Income, savings,
debt and credit rating?
It’s important to know what the other person will bring to the marriage. Both parties should fully disclose
any obligations that will affect your household’s creditworthiness or interfere with your financial goals. Even
modest debt or a substandard credit rating can affect your ability to purchase a house or obtain a car loan.
The revelation of adverse credit or a ballooning college loan can be a deal breaker for some, but more
commonly it provides the opportunity for couples to work together to correct past mistakes and move
forward. By rolling up your sleeves and tackling debt together,
you can start your married life with a renewed commitment to
financial responsibility.
3. What are your financial hopes
& dreams?
Entering into a lifelong relationship is exciting, but also a little
frightening. Soon you will be accountable not only to yourself, but
also to your spouse. Do you both want the same kind of future?
Big questions such as whether to have a family, where to live
and the type of work you pursue will affect your financial goals.
Smaller questions about things such as how much you spend on
your hobbies or what kinds of vacations you take can reveal gaps.
Again, ongoing conversations about your financial aspirations will
go a long way toward helping you achieve your goals. While it’s
important to have small and large goals, it’s equally important to
be flexible. Strong relationships endure when people are able to
compromise and adapt to changing circumstances.
Remain committed to financial honesty.
Keep the lines of communication open to prevent financial
matters from derailing your marriage. Sit down often to review
income, savings and spending, and make time to talk about
your financial hopes and dreams. Meet with a financial advisor
who can help you create a plan for your financial future.
Annual or more frequent meetings with your advisor can help
you stay on track over the years as your needs and goals evolve.
The more collaborative and mindful you can be about your
money, the stronger your relationship will be.
