April 2015 Homemaker Newsletter Message from the Environment, Housing and Energy Chairman: It’s that time of year when we as homemakers think of spring cleaning. I would like to share with you some thoughts on household mold. There is always some mold everywhere – in the air and on many surfaces. Mold grows where there is moisture. Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects or none at all. People with mold allergies may have anywhere from mild to severe reactions. It can cause upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing and wheezing in otherwise healthy people. You can control mold growth in your home by keeping humidity levels between 40% and 60%; promptly fixing leaky roofs, windows and pipes; thoroughly clean and dry after flooding; and ventilate shower, laundry and cooking areas. Mold can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water or a bleach solution of no more than one (1) cup of bleach to a gallon of water. The surface should remain wet for 15 minutes for it to be effective. If you choose to use bleach remember to never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners. It will produce toxic fumes. Open windows to provide fresh air, wear nonporous gloves and protective eye wear. Always follow the manufacturer’s instruction when using any cleaning product. Remember that April is clean up month and we should always recycle. Watch your newspapers for the dates for pickup of extra trash to take advantage of the service.
