EARTH Information Evening
Wednesday, April 22 at 7:00 pm in the Grade 7 Classroom
EARTH (Education and Renewal Through the
Hands) is an experiential education program
that takes place in the farm and nature setting of
Hawthorne Valley. The rhythms and work of the
farm and the beauty of the natural world are our
co-teachers, and help to strengthen the will and
nurture the heart of the child. This can help the
child develop the capacities to succeed in the
larger classroom setting, as well as in all of life.
Our focus on individual needs within a small
group allows the children to awaken and unfold their gifts, as well as meet the challenges
they face. The 2015-2016 school year will offer a full day program for grades 1 - 6. Learn
more about the EARTH program at this informational meeting. Click here to email lead
teacher Stu Summer or phone 518-965-6548 with questions; or email Amy Flaum,
Director of Admissions.
Lower School Eurythmy Assembly
Friday, April 24 at 1:45 pm in the School Hall
Parents and friends are warmly invited to the lower school eurythmy assembly. All
students from Grade 3 through 8 will share their work in eurythmy class; some of our
faculty will perform as well. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to be seated, and plan
to stay for the entire assembly. Flash photography is prohibited so as not to distract the
performers. We look forward to seeing you there!
Grandparents and Special Friends Day
Friday, May 1 at 9:30 am
Each year we host a Grandparents and Special Friends Day. We want to make sure that
we have the contact information for all grandparents and special friends who should be
invited to this event. If you have not already provided us with addresses (email and
postal) for these important people in your lives, please do so now. This year's event will
be held on May 1, 2015 (the day before the May Day Celebration and Spring Faire) and
includes a classroom visit for the guests beginning at 9:30-10:15, followed by a tea and
treats reception in the teaching kitchen and a eurythmy performance in the school hall. This event is specifically geared to grandparents and special friends; parents who wish to
visit the classroom should make a separate arrangement with their class teachers. It is an
RSVP event as we want to have enough food (and chairs in the rooms) for all the guests.
Please click here to email Max Leiber with contact information or phone 518-672-7092,
ext 114.

News From the Branches
Paul Winter: Adventures in SoundPlay Workshop
Friday, May 22, 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School
Suggested donation levels: $25 Individual/$50 family/$10 students & farmers
We are very excited to welcome Paul Winter to
Hawthorne Valley. His Adventures in SoundPlay
workshop offers participants the experience and tools to
enable you to make your own music, grow your own
pieces, create your own “bands,” and for you to BE as
music in your life, resonant with your world, confident of
the song that is you. The process strengthens your
appetite for adventure in life and gives you confidence to
pursue your dreams. It awakens a quality of aliveness to
ourselves and our environment.
This workshop is for anyone who has an interest in selfexpression. These adventures are intended to offer
liberating experiences for the shyest person, who may have been told in the 4th grade
that they “couldn’t carry a tune in a paper bag,” as well as for the classically-trained
musician who has yearned to play freely without direction from a printed page.
Adventures in SoundPlay is based on the premise that all people have a well-spring of
music with them, and that the expression of this music can be easily brought forth through
a shared experience in music-making. THERE WILL BE NO AUDIENCE: everyone
present will be a participant; no spectators. THIS IS NOT A MASTER CLASS. The
goal is to get clues toward mastering your own unique musical offering for yourself and/or
for the world. ABOVE ALL, IT’S FUN! ALL INSTRUMENTS AND VOICES ARE
WELCOME. It is Paul's fond hope is that we will have players from all the orchestral
families – strings, double-reeds, single reeds, brass, percussion, keyboards, voices, as
well as ethnic world music instruments.
About Paul Winter: Paul Winter’s musical realm has long embraced the traditions of the
HVS Bi-Weekly 4-22-15.htm[4/23/2015 9:33:30 AM]
HVS Bi-Weekly 4-22-15
world’s cultures, as well as the extraordinary voices of what he refers to as “the greater
symphony of the Earth.” His concert tours and recording expeditions have taken him to
thirty-seven countries and to wilderness areas on six continents, into which he has
traveled on rafts, mules, dog sleds, horses, kayaks, sailboats, steamers, tug-boats and
Land Rovers. Since 1980, Paul and the Consort have been artists-in-residence at the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC, where they have presented over 100 special
events, including annual Winter and Summer Solstice Celebrations, Carnival for the
Rainforest, and their ecological mass, Missa Gaia/Earth Mass, which is performed
annually each October as part of the Feast of St. Francis.
Space is limited - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. To read more about the workshop, click
here to visit the Paul Winter website.

Alkion Center Summer Intensives 2015
Awakening to Nature’s Open Secrets: A Living Approach to Education | June 21 –
26, 2015
A collaboration of The Nature Institute and the Alkion Center for Adult Education
The aim of this intensive is to facilitate an immersion in a
phenomenological, experience-based approach to
studying and interacting with the world. The course will
take as its starting point experiential learning in the
study of nature in the mornings and continue with artistic
activities in the afternoons. The intensive will be of
special interest to educators who want to improve their
practical knowledge of phenomenological science

teaching and to practice truly experience-based learning
in which knowledge grows out of the encounter with the
world in a living way. Course instructors: Craig Holdrege, Henrike Holdrege, Martina
Angela Müller, Eric Müller, Patrick Stolfo, Andree Ward, and Channa Seidenberg
Working Together in Community: Conversation, Team work, Facilitation and
Decision-Making |
June 28 – July 3, 2015
Part two of the series Leading with Spirit: The Art of Administration and Leadership in
Waldorf Schools, that began in Summer 2014 at the Alkion Center.
These one-week professional development seminars offer teachers, administrators, board
members and parents an opportunity to reflect on and work with the challenges of
building a Waldorf School Community that is vibrant, innovative and effective, while
honoring the unique contributions of each member of the community. Each seminar can
be taken on its own but, when taken in sequence, they will build a deeper capacity for
serving the community of Waldorf education. The seminars are based on the successful
certificate and Master’s Program in Waldorf School Administration and Community
Development offered at Sunbridge College between 1993-2008. Course instructors:
Christopher Schaefer, Marti Stewart, and Mara White.
Arts and Crafts Immersions | June 28 – July 3, 2015
Though all subjects throughout the grades should be enlivened
and permeated by the artistry of the teacher, specialized arts
and crafts skills are first introduced in the Waldorf middle school
and continue through the high school. Yet many aspiring and
experienced teachers lack the practical and artistic expertise to
provide students with the called for aesthetic experiences. This
year, the Alkion Center is providing the opportunity for intense
explorations and practice in four areas: the two-dimensional
(painting and drawing); the three-dimensional (clay, wood, and
stone); fiber arts (spinning, weaving, and basketry); and
bookbinding techniques. Course instructors: Martina Angela Müller, Patrick Stolfo,
Candace Christiansen, and Lisa Damien.
