Join us in costume for an evening of magic and mystery!
Families are invited to follow the "Jack-O-Lantern" path to
visit Baba Yaga, answer the riddles of the Forest Wizard,
roast a marshmallow by the bonfire, visit Mother Earth's
fairy garden and enjoy a puppet show! This year, the
Magical Puppet Tree
will perform the Grimm's story of
Jorinda and Joringel - a tale of faithful love's ability to free
enchantment. Puppet Performances will be
at 6:00 and
7:00 pm in the School Hall. Admission of $4 helps to fund the evening's festivities.
Kindergarten families have (oh so kindly!) baked home made cookies for Baba Yaga to
share at our festival. Jack-O-Lantern carving for children and parents to help prepare for
the festival will happen at 1pm on Thursday, October 30th outside of the teaching kitchen
at the school. Come and join in the fun! To help create this event, please call 672-7092 x
103 and leave a message. Thank-you!

Thank you for taking the time to do this!! You and those
depending upon you will feel more relaxed as the Fair date
approaches if you understand how the Fair works and what
is expected of you.
The Yuletide Fair is one of the greatest opportunities to
express and
to experience the strength and unique beauty of
our community. It is a crescendo in the life of Hawthorne
Valley that asks us to share talents and kindle friendships. Most importantly, through our
work leading up to
the Fair–as well as during the Fair itself–our children experience the
strength, meaning and integrity of their school. The Fair is also the second most
significant fundraising event of the year.
For detailed information on all Yuletide Fair activities, assignments, and more, click here
to visit the Yuletide Fair pages in the Parent Portal.
And watch this space in the next
Bi-weekly for news about an exciting new fundraising initiative built around the
Gingerbread Contest!

Community Craft Room Workshops Are Beginning! An exciting new set of workshops
will begin on October 28th, Tuesday directly after drop-off ( 8:30-10:30).
Our first
workshop will be taught by an alum of the school, Jennie Koch
who is a potter. We will
meet in the new practical arts building and learn to make child and doll sized pottery, as
well as ornaments. Everyone welcome at all skill levels. Bring a rolling pin if you have
one.
Our second workshop will be taught by school parent Nina Kelly on November 4th,

kindergarten). She will teach us how to make sweet snowflake felt ornaments. All skill
levels welcome. Bring scissors and needle if you have them.
On November 8th, Saturday, from 1-4pm in the teaching kitchen we will have a bevy of

benefit the school. Please contact Amelia at 518-672-0040 for more information.
Dominic Wolff is organizing this year’s Gnomes.
The Gnome troupe is looking for
helpers! No experience is necessary, just your enthusiasm. We are a small group of
Gnomes who will be making toys for the upcoming Fair. We have a small workshop set
up in a secret location and primarily work with wood. We are looking for new Gnomes to
help with all facets of the toy making
experience from cutting out shapes on a band-saw
to sanding and finishing. We would also be grateful for Gnomes who might be able to
donate materials for our endeavors. You can work in a group or find your own schedule
as the space has flexible use hours. For those of you interested in being an adjunct
Gnome working from home or your own space, well, you are also welcome. Please
contact Dominic Wolff at 518-620-0950 for more details.
Hawthorne Valley Coat Exchange
In the spirit of St. Martin, Hawthorne Valley School will be hosting a coat exchange on St.
Martins Day, November 11, from 3-4pm on the porch just outside the teaching
kitchen. This will be just before the St.
Martin's pageant and Lantern Walk for grades 13. Any winter coats, capes and jackets you might spare for someone in need will be very
much appreciated and may be donated in a designated box just outside of Mrs. Schmolz'
office beginning November 3. Volunteers to
help set up and manage the event are also
welcome! For any questions, please call Susan Wendell at 672-4125. Thank you!
Ski Season Is Just Around the Corner!
Hello,
Skiers and Riders - It is that time of year when
the leaves lose their summer color and rejoice in
fall's splendor, all in preparation for the deep snow
that will blanket the hills this winter. It is also time to
sign up for Hawthorne Valley's ski program at
Catamount. The program typically consists of 6
sessions – one per week – of 4 hours duration each.
Lessons and rentals are available. Last year was
fun for beginners and more advanced riders. It was wonderful to see the children
coming
together for fun on the slopes after a long week of school. The ski program is open to
anyone 6 years and older (this includes siblings, parents and friends of students).
Everyone is welcome
to join our club! Please email Lee Jarzombek
with any questions.
Laurie Schmolz will have paper copies of the program forms in her office and will collect
the completed forms. Please turn in completed forms before November 1st.
Thank You From the Fall Festival Coordinators
Thank you to all parents and students who volunteered at and attended our 20th Annual
Hawthorne Valley Fall Festival on Columbus Day weekend! We are incredibly grateful for
your help in making the festival a reality. The festival grows every year, with more than
3,000 people in attendance and a record 29 local vendors and exhibitors participating.
We would love to hear your feedback and suggestions for future festivals. Please email
us your comments. Thank you again! -Sushannah Sorensen, Karen Preuss, & Lauren

Around the School
The Sixth and Seventh Grade classes traveled together to the Cloisters Museum in New
York City on Friday, October 10th. The classes were mixed together and split into two
tour groups. One group toured the museum, focusing on the religious and secular
aspects of medieval life, while the other group heard about courtly life of the time. After
lunch in Fort Tryon Park, students and chaperones returned to the museum, broke into
small groups, and drew pictures for their main lesson books.

drawing kits. They design, custom cut and sew each item. All of their materials are made
in the USA. Brenda said "when they were taking handwork classes, they had no idea that
this would be their future. They have used their HVS education in so many ways. Seth is
a well known singer and artist in the northwest and California. Casey also had a great
career as a professional snowboarder. Our oldest son Cory is now a civil engineer in
Rochester and Dustin is a nurse manager with a group of hospitals in Bakersfield, CA. I
just wanted to thank you for the education and skills they received at Hawthorne Valley."

Girls Volleyball -
What a wonderful
season experienced by the modified and
varsity teams under the coaching and
guidance of Head Coach Amy Flaum
and Assistant Coach Liz Yorck. We're
especially proud of the commitment,
improvement, and effort of of our 7
graduating seniors! The HVS modified
volleyball team gained tremendous
experience in its first ever season; this important addition to the program will help build
future success. There are much more important successes than just those measured by
the win-loss column (although we improved in that regard as well); thank you
to all those
who brought great work and support to a truly successful season!
Cross Country -
the season races towards
its finish line; the Varsity teams go to
Sectionals on October 31 at Saratoga State
Park, while the Modified teams ran their last
race of the season at the Patroon
Conference championships on October 21.
The Boys Modified Team has had an
especially amazing season; they were
undefeated, winning every single meet and
invitational they raced in. Congratulations
boys modified! And a
big thank you to all parents, runners, and coaches; your effort and
support helped build a great season for possibly the single largest cross country team (35
runners) HVS has ever had. Let's keep the support
going for the Varsity teams through
their sectional run! Remember that all runners must attend and bring all uniform pieces to
practice tomorrow 10/23 for team photos.
Uniform Returns - Remember the goal is 100% return of all uniforms!
Girls Volleyball - return all uniforms to Coach Amy, Coach Liz, or Laurie Schmolz by this
Friday, October 24.

Cross Country - all players are to attend XC practice tomorrow, Thursday, October 23
with any and all uniform pieces; runners who are not running in sectionals will turn in their
uniforms after team photos. Remember, all school sports uniforms must be returned
(yes, even those old cross country shorts; yes, even your "souvenir" jersey).
Sports Calendars - game schedules for our upcoming Winter sports season are available
on the school website. Click here to view.
These schedules are still in process and are
always subject to change. Practice schedules are still in development. If your child/ward
is a student athlete be sure to check this calendar and your email frequently.
Parent Involvement in Sports -
As we approach the Winter season, the Athletics
Department seeks volunteers to help operate a concession stand, help with events, work
on
fundraising efforts and more. If you are interested in volunteering or if you have a sport
specific question please contact Athletic Director Max Leiber phone # 518-672-7092
