Hayle Emergency
Services
Community Station
By the time the Pump is on the
streets the long awaited Fire station
will be operational.
This is a bit of a coup for Hayle as it
is uniquely the first Tri-Service in the
country.
The past year has seen nine people
training with other operational units
in Exeter and Penzance, attending
real fire situations. Five individuals
will be full time operatives on a rota
basis providing cover at all times
providing the first service.
The second service to be installed
will be the Ambulance in middle April
and following that the Hayle Police
Station will become operational.
The Tri-Services Officer will be a
1st Responder for Ambulance, on call
Firefighter and undertake some
restricted Police roles working with
the community. The Watch
Manager is W.M.O'Connell
Thanks must go to all who were
involved in bringing this much
needed project to Hayle.
Hayle Heritage
Centre
Hayle Heritage Centre will be reopening to the public for the 2015
season on Wednesday the 8th of
April.
On the 8th of April from 11-4, we
are running a FREE family activity
day: drop in any time and your
children can learn to make vintage
Easter cards, have fun model
making and take part in an Easter
egg trail (the activities are suitable
for children aged 3-15).
From the 10th of April, the Centre
will be open every Monday,
Wednesday and Friday 11-4.
Our volunteers have been working

the Harvey’s Foundry Site

Hayle in Bloom
hard over the winter, and we have
created new displays. These
displays have been made possible
by fantastic donations from Hayle
residents – recent donations include
a Victorian costume, Hayle regatta
cup, a model beam engine and tools
that were made by an engineering
apprentice at Harvey’s Foundry in
the 1860s.
Having been awarded a Heritage
Lottery fund grant, we have a busy
couple of years ahead of us: in April,
we will be recruiting for a new
Learning And Outreach Officer;
during the summer, we will be
running free print-making workshops,
guided tours and talks; and, in
September, Wave Hub are moving
out downstairs, so, we are
expanding the Centre and creating
At the very well-attended A.G.M. in
February new officials were elected
and there was a real feeling of
enthusiasm amongst the members.
The new chairman is Nigel Powell,
the vice chairman, Michael Kemp
stays in post, the new treasurer is
Lyn Reffold and the secretary will be
Jackie Mace. Flowers were
presented to Anne Marie Rance the
outgoing chairman, and to Ann
Foreman who keeps a log of the
adopt-a-plotters and which plots they
have adopted. She was also
presented with a litter-picker in
recognition of the sterling work she
does picking up litter and dog mess.
If you want to help to keep Hayle
looking lovely, and would like to have
your own plot, please give Ann a call
on 01736 754452. The plants will be

supplied by the gardeners, so there
is no cost to you.
Even if you don’t want to do be a
gardener, there is a multitude of jobs
crying out to be done, now that we
are all part of the Big Society – i.e.
no help from the Government - such
as repairing and painting the seats
around the town, some of them are
looking distinctly shabby.
Flowers were also given to Lyn
Reffold, who together with her
husband Mike organised an Auction
at the Cornish Arms at which over
£500 was raised for Hayle in Bloom
funds. Many thanks,Lyn and Mike.
The auction on 21st February at the
Cornish Arms was a successful
evening. John Broadbridge on the
microphone with his "auctioneer's
hat " on did a very good job and
raised lots of money for us, for which
we thank him. We had a wonderful
response from the business people
in Hayle and we would like to thank

Flora Merrifield
Volunteering at Hayle Archive,
days can be hectic with requests but
sometimes quiet and subdued,
involving coffee, biscuits, and
catching up with chores.
On a morning like this a few weeks
ago, the phone rang. The caller was
Joan, a lady from Pembrokeshire,
Wales, getting in touch to tell us
about her friend, Flora.
I answered the call, and heard that
Flora Merrifield was a sprightly,
energetic lady, ninety-five years old,
still inclined to go on adventurous
coach trips and have 'a bit of a jig'
dancing till late in the evening.
Flora was born and grew up in Hayle
until she left at the age of fifteen, and
recently had become very nostalgic,
longing to return, if only for a day, to
visit the town once more.
And so her good friend Joan had
said “Let's do it!”

A coach trip to Newquay was booked
for the beginning of March, with the
two adventurers intending to take
advantage of a day trip to St Ives
during that time, so that somehow
they could reach Hayle, if only for a
few hours.
Someone had suggested that Joan
phone the Archive, although she
confessed that she was unsure how
we could help.
We conferred, rang her back, and
said we'd see what we could do.
Flora was one of eleven children and
lived with her grandparents at 85 St
John's Street. In 1924, at the age of
four, she started her schooling at
Bodriggy School, and still vividly
remembers incidents from those
days.
We firstly agreed that one of us
would collect Joan and Flora from
the coach at St Ives. We visited the
two children's organisations at what
was originally Bodriggy School, and
they were interested and helpful,
saying of course she was welcome
to visit.
Lucy Frears, from the Hayle Oral
History Project agreed to interview
Flora, and also suggested that we
contact Hayle Day Care Centre.
Lesley, in charge of the Day Centre,
was incredibly helpful. She phoned
around and spoke to Hayle legend
Winnie Basset, who, at the age of
94, clearly remembered going to
school with Flora. She then invited
two of us from the Archive to lunch
with Winnie and Flora, mentioning
that maybe the Cornishman would
be interested in the reunion of two
school friends who hadn't met up for
80 years.
The Cornishman was interested,
and Flora and Winnie were so
excited at the thought of meeting up
after so many years. We found that
the events, which would obviously
include a tour of Hayle, were
spiralling, and would probably
require more time than the coach trip
allowed. With this in mind, when

Joan phoned to finalise things a few
days before the trip, we offered to
drive to Newquay to collect them,
and return them at the end of the
day.
Sadly, this story does not have a
happy ending. The very next day,
lovely Joan rang to tell me that Flora
had had a stroke and was very ill in
hospital.Since then she has kept us
up to date, and on the 2nd March,
the day they would have been
travelling to Newquay, instead she
visited Flora in hospital. She walked
into the room, to find Flora lying with
closed eyes. At once her eyes
opened, and looking at Joan, she
said “Why aren't you in Cornwall?”
We so hope that with the aid of her
good friend Joan, Flora's indomitable
spirit will win through.

Girls from the 3rd Hayle
Brownies are looking for
more adult volunteers to
help run their pack, which
meets every Tuesday
evening at Phillack Church Hall.
They have their own ideas about the
type of person, but they are all
agreed that anyone kind, caring, fun
and adventurous would fit the bill.
The Brownies currently enjoy lots of
exciting activities, including crafts,
cooking, swimming, cycling,
sleepovers and pack holidays, but do
need more adults to be involved. If

On Saturday, 11 April, at 7.30pm
Hayle Film Club will present the
popular drama THE IMITATION
GAME starring the multi-nominated
Benedict Cumberbatch as
cryptanalyst Alan Turing during his
World War II code-breaking stint at
Bletchley Park.
The next day's matinee, at 2.30pm
on Sunday, 12 April, is another biopic
of guitar virtuoso Jimi Hendrix, in

JIMI: ALL IS BY MY SIDE, which
focuses on the early stages of his
career, when in 1966 he leaves New
York for London and begins to make
his mark in rock-and-roll. Both films
have been lauded as fine dramas yet
controversial in their alternative
takes on history. Come see for
yourself.
Film titles for May and June are
still being decided. Under
consideration are THE THEORY OF
EVERYTHING, BIRDMAN, STILL
LIFE, TESTAMENT OF YOUTH and

SOS - SAVE OUR SAND
''We are a local pressure group
committed to the welfare of the
beach. We have campaigned for 15
years to stop the sale of sand
dredged and dug from the beach and
channel.
We have been calling for the return
of sluicing and are delighted to see
the work on the system at Carnsew,
behind Asda, coming to fruition. We
are determined to see the new gates
fully automated.
We also undertake beach cleans in
the summer in partnership with the
holiday parks which front the
Towans.
We welcome supporters new and old
to our meetings held upstairs at the

award-winning presenter Tim
Hubbard, a keen gardener himself

Linden Homes Application
The Town Council considered the
Linden Homes Application,
PA14/09315, for 222 homes on the
land SSE of St Georges Road.
On the last Thursday of each month,
Rosewarne Manor has Tasting
Nights – seven fantastic courses of
superb food for £45. Advance
booking is essential, and a private
dining room is available for groups of
10 – 14 people at no extra charge.
The next Tasting Night is on April
30th and the one after that will be
May 28th

Approximately 55 members of the
public attended the meeting, which
took place in Penpol School.
It was resolved unanimously that
Hayle Town Council objects strongly
to planning application PA14/09315
on the following grounds:
• the National Planning Policy
Framework presumption in favour of
development of brownfield land and
the emerging Neighbourhood Plan’s
prioritisation of other sites over this
one;
• loss of agricultural land;
• harm to the setting of listed
buildings and the Conservation
Area;
• harm to the setting of the World
Heritage Site (including the objection
of English Heritage);
• failure to meet the 40% affordable
housing requirement and the risible
15% offered (even though another
development at the other end of the
town had complied with 40%);
• in the spirit of localism weight
should be given to local opinion,
which was overwhelmingly against
this application;
• Hayle Town Council’s disagreement
with Cornwall Highways’ traffic
impact assessment, especially at
Foundry Square;
• although land was being given for
school development no education
contribution was being paid and the
land offered would not be sufficient
for future expansion;
• it appeared that it was not a
coincidence that this and other
developments were coming forward
before the Community Infrastructure
Levy, which would provide the town
with £2,000 per dwelling, was in

place;
• light pollution would be a significant
issue;
• drainage was unsatisfactory, does
not take account of the poor state of
very old drains, sewage is already
leaking into the harbour and flooding
is likely.
The next stage is for the application
to go before Cornwall Council's
Strategic Planning Committee and
there is still time to send your views
to Cornwall Council and its
Members.
Transfer of Amenity Sites
The Town Council is still in
negotiation with Cornwall Council
regarding the transfer of the town’s
open spaces: - King George V
Memorial Walk, The Plantation,
Hayle Recreation Ground, the
Millponds and Station Hill Gardens.
It was initially anticipated that the
facilities would have been
transferred by 1st April 2015.
However, the discussions have been
more protracted and complex than
expected. On a positive note, we
have recently received confirmation
from Cornwall Council that money
has been secured for the repair and
upgrade of these facilities, which
includes full repair to The Plantation
Wall which runs alongside the
B3301, and the work has been
programmed into the schedules. The
works will be completed prior to the
transfer. In the meantime, we have
been looking at what will be
necessary in terms of staff, contracts
and equipment for when we take
responsibility for these sites back.

The negotiations are still ongoing
and we remain hopeful that realistic
dates for the transfer will be
confirmed shortly.
Council Vacancy

Annual Citizens and
Organizations of the Year
Nomination packs are available from
the Town Clerk’s office for the
Citizens and Organization of the
Year Awards. The Council is also
seeking nominations for Hayle Young
Person of the Year and Hayle Youth
Organization of the Year. The
deadline for all nominations will be
Friday 17 April 2015.
The Council has recently advertised
the vacancy for co-option. The
deadline for applicants wanting to be
considered is 1st April 2015 and all
interested candidates will be invited
to attend an interview on the evening
of 9th April 2015.

TWINNING
ASSOCIATION
We are once again preparing to
welcome our friends from our
twinned town of PORDIC in Brittany.
2015 will be the 18th year that
these exchanges have successfully
happened. This year, our visitors
arrive in Hayle on Wednesday 13th
May. Throughout the year, we fundraise so that we can take them to
see some of the delights of Cornwall
and arrange a meal and some
entertainment for them.
Later this year, on Friday August
21st, we will be leaving HAYLE for
our trip to PORDIC where we will be
taken around to see some of the
beauty of Brittany and also be
entertained with a group meal and
music.
If you feel that you would like to
join in and enjoy a visit to PORDIC
with us, then call Sonia on 01736
754531. All that is required is that
you are willing to host someone for a
couple of days and to help with our
fund-raising. Then you have your
chance to cross the Channel with us.
Our membership is £7.50 single,
£10.00 per couple and £12.50 per
family. We meet on the first Monday
of the month.

Millpond
Update
“Spring, Spring, Spring!”
Oh, where is the year going again?
We are now officially classified as
spring, even though winter hasn’t
strictly finished with us yet and, if we
find it confusing, the wildlife are also
having their own problems. Some of
the ducks have already moved up to
Copperhouse, and our two
reprobates are already preparing
their nest. That means that all our
other residents will have to suffer,
Odin being a total pain in the rear
while Freya is nesting, and, this year,
they appear to be earlier than usual.
We have a number of unusual
trees along Millpond Avenue which
are part of the historic fabric of the
Inner Pond. Recently, one of our
Strawberry Trees was severely
damaged and had to be partially
removed. Happily, in spite of what
happened, we have noticed that it is
regenerating from the base and, in

time, will recover. We think it is
about 100 years old, and it was
originally planted as part of the
ornamental enhancement of the
Inner Pool.
The Harveys followed the Victorian
custom of planting trees to
commemorate special family events,
such as births, marriages and
deaths. The magnificent Copper
Beech, in the grounds of the
“Laurels” was planted on the
occasion of the marriage of John
Harvey Trevithick.
All our trees are covered by
Protection Orders, and great care
must be taken not to damage them,
as has unfortunately happened to
the Lime Tree in front of Duckhouse
Island. We hope that no further
damage will be done and we can
continue to enjoy the beauty of our
woodland through the coming
seasons. To that end, Olivia, our
gardener, and Tony, her assistant,
have planted a number of new
saplings along the Rope Walk as
part of the “Bee Aware” and “Butterfly
Projects”.
Our Gadwell ducks have just made
their return visit to the Inner Pool on
their way back to Iceland to breed.

We will see them again in the
autumn when they return to
overwinter on Tresco. Our BlackHeaded Gulls are also starting to
leave for their breeding grounds in
Wales: summer visitors which nest
on site and hope that we manage to
attract the odd rarity.

Focus on Foundry Shopping Village.
There have been some major changes at the Shopping Village, (formerly
known as Pratt’s Market).
The whole ambience is friendly with very helpful shop owners offering a
wide range of gods, mostly in the antique and gift area.
Starting outside, at the entrance you are greeted by Melrose Bags,
selling bags and satchels.
On the left hand side is Discoveries ,
Malcolm Donnithorne, has just started out
selling vintage collectables .
Walking into the building you will find Lucy
Kemp Jewellery, expanded into a double
unit where she will also be holding one day
workshops.
Centre front is Hobby Crafts of Cornwall,
selling Julia Richards items that are mostly
handmade in Cornwall, motto “special things
for special people”
On the right you will find Sue’s Fabric and
Wool Shop, having everything you need for knitting and sewing.

Next to her is Pretty Useful run by Kirsten, who sells ceramics by Emma
Bridgewater, gifts and hand-sewn crafts.
In the centre is The Sleepy Hollow, selling gothic and alternative items.
At the rear is Lindsay’s Beautiful U Beauty Salon, offering everything from
manicure, pedicures, facial massage- in short all you need to make you feel
really good.
Next to Lindsay is the animal rescue centre Brother Wolf, selling donated
goods.
Opposite Brother Wolf there is Angel Travel, where you can buy or hire
disability scooters.
Upstairs you will find the beginnings of
an Antique Emporium,
with Paul Dyer at the rear, selling

One Stop Shop
Come into Hayle Library where we
stock a wide selection of books and
DVDs for people of all ages to enjoy.
We provide computer access for
members and visitors. You can pay
your council tax, order recycling
bags and apply for a Blue Badge, to
name just a few. The Tourist
Information Centre is also based in
the library building.
Kindly note that we no longer
photocopy benefit evidence for our
customers; this also includes the
handling of new claim forms. They
need to do it themselves, but we do
have a photocopier they can use and
a post box in the building that we
will empty each day and send off
through our internal mail system.
Also, we are no longer able to offer
our phone for customers to use to
contact housing benefit or council
tax.
The ‘Bounce and Rhyme’ session
for babies and toddlers is on
Wednesday mornings at 10.30am,
and ‘Storytime and Fun’ for the
slightly older children has moved to a
Friday afternoon at 3.45pm.
We also provide a home library
service for any customers that are
housebound.
Hayle Chapter & Verse meet in the
library on the 1st Wednesday of the

successful start to the New Year
with several new members joining
We have a person from Stonham

The first engagement was in
February when we sang at the
Godolphin Arms in Marazion on
the occasion of the centenary
celebrations of the W.I. We sang
to a large and appreciative
audience including several
dignitaries.
The choir welcomes new
members of all voices, there are
no auditions and you don’t need
to be able to read music.
Singing in a choir, as well as
being a very sociable activity is
also thought to have health
benefits, so if you enjoy singing
do come along and see how
pleasurable it can be. You will find
a very friendly and supportive
group of ladies, you will also have
a mentor to help you along should
you feel the need, and a very
varied choice of music, folk,
popular, music from the shows,
sacred music and madrigals,
something for everyone in fact.

fund raising for Cancer Researck

kitchen as did all the volunteerswho
made everything go smoothly.
Amongst them were several
youngsters Louis Firth, Lowenna
Hurr and Ben pictured below, who
acted as waiters and ensured the
tables were ready for the next lot of
customers.

I am in the process of putting
together an A5 sized 48 page book
exploring some of our lesser known
archaeology sites. In total 30 are
detailed, the final one being the little
known Hayle menhir.
The book takes an anticlockwise
tour around West Penwith and is fully
illustrated in colour with my own
photographs and artwork. It is not
intended as a heavily scholastic
work, but will I hope be entertaining
and informative.

are already in the process of
compiling the first pages.
I am looking to finance the project
with Kickstarter, the online crowdfunding method, where supporters
can pledge differing amounts of
money for a variety of rewards; in
this case promotional merchandise,
original artwork, sets of postcards
featuring my work, copies of the
book and so on. It is a very
successful method of funding which
has seen all manner of enterprises
come to fruition; from new inventions
to media projects, charity moneyraisers to business ideas.

aim is to get the remainder of the
book compiled by the end of
April/early May at the latest, and the

unturned' which is written under my
pseudonym 'artferret'. I will get a
larger number of copies printed if
funds allow, but that's up to you.
The plan is to sell it through my

various independent establishments
such as small bookshops, cafés,
local museums, galleries and so on,

this service is designed to help
alleviate.
The service is staffed by
volunteers, and they make regular
weekly telephone calls offering
‘talking support’ to clients. The
clients will have asked to be part of
the service or been referred to
Cornwall Blind Association by
another agency, friends or family.
Our volunteers come from all walks
of life and may be blind, visuallyimpaired or sighted. Most
importantly, they will need to be
perfectly at ease on the telephone
and able to relate comfortably with
people using that medium.
We currently have 24 volunteers
and a service user list of over 60
people.

designed to reach out to blind and
visually-impaired people living in
isolation in Cornwall.
In Cornwall, with our large rural
areas and lack of adequate public
transport, many blind, visuallyimpaired people or those coming to

go days and weeks without personal
contact. Erosion of confidence and
plummeting of self-esteem as well as
feelings of being a ‘nuisance’ are
some of the knock-on effects of this
lack of personal contact. The
resulting isolation and loneliness
