Gareth Churcher is an active musician with a love
for all music making and composition. His primary
instruments are Trombone and Piano and his
compositional works have been used on an
international level. Gareth's passion for Music
Education has seen him undertake peripatetic
teaching since 1999 and he has had the privilege
of holding the post of Brass Team Leader for Music
Cornwall and now the Head of Service role for the
newly formed Cornwall Music Service Trust. A
passion for conducting has given Gareth the
opportunity to work with many diverse ensembles
further broadening his horizons into different
disciplines of music making
“Chris has worked across the formal and non-formal
music sectors for 40 years. He trained as a clarinettist
at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall
School of Music & Drama. Subsequently became
Head of Woodwind and then Head of Instrumental
Services with the Inner London Education Authority,
Director of Instrumental Teacher Training at the
Guildhall and Adviser for Instrumental Teacher &
Curriculum Development with Cornwall LA. Since 1996
he has been Co-Director of MADE (formerly Music &
Dance Education) in Cornwall – working across early
years, schools & extended services, youth &
community and healthcare sectors – and developing
partnerships with a wide range of arts and non-arts
organisations. In 2013 he also took up the post of
Lecturer in (Formal & Non-Formal) Music Education in
AMATA at Falmouth University.
As a conductor and animateur he has worked with a
range of youth and professional ensembles and
orchestras across Europe and this has enabled him to
work closely with leading composers, such as Tippett,
Bedford and Lutoslawski, and conductors, such as
Groves, Glover, Mackerras and Rattle.
He completed his Doctorate in 1999 and used a life
history approach to examine instrumental music
teaching and learning. He has regularly worked with
numerous LA’s and Agencies providing advice,
support and INSET courses for instrumental teachers; a
Course Leader for the Associated Board Professional
Development Course and a Grade Examiner with the
Guildhall School of Music & Drama and now Trinity
College. He was principal author of ‘Instrumental
Teaching and Learning in Context’ and a variety of
teaching repertoire for wind and brass instruments. In
addition to publications with Trinity College, Chester
Music and IMP he recently completed the 52-book
Woodwind & Brass Method series for Boosey &
Hawkes.”
