“The wine is of a pale straw color with beautiful green hues. Its nose is marked
by aromas of fresh fruits, specifically tropical fruits. After some aeration,
the wine reveals its terroir and very elegant toasted notes are perceived. The
attack on the palate is crisp. The power of this wine is evident. Finally, its

“The NV Brut Premier is a gorgeous wine that stands head and shoulders
above the vast majority of wines in its price range. Apparently, it is quite
possible to make great Champagne that doesn’t cost a small fortune. Ripe
pears, smoke, spices, dried flowers and herbs are some of the many nuances
that emerge from the glass. The Brut Premier shows lovely mid-palate depth
and fabulous overall balance. Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon has done
it again. This is a fabulous Brut Premier.” (92 points) -Robert Parker

1 - bottle Numanthia Termanthia 2010
estimated value: $175
104
“The palate is full-bodied and robust with good weight. This is perhaps the
most powerful Termanthia that I have encountered with waves of ripe dark
cherries, cassis and blueberry washing over the palate, fanning out towards a
dense, peppermint-tinged finish. This is a lovely wine, although to be frank, I
actually find more soul in the Numanthia.” (93 points) -The Wine Advocate

109
1 - bottle Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Les Galichets 2006
2 - bottles Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Clos Sénéchal 2006
Awarding the 2006 Les Galichets 90 points, John Gilman describes the wine
as “…a blend of dark berries, tree bark, herbs, damp earth, woodsmoke and bell
pepper. On the palate the wine is medium-full, round and complex, with fine
focus and depth, moderate tannins, sound acids and good length and grip on
the finish…the 2006 Les Galichets is a classic young Bourgueil in the making,
which should blossom beautifully with a few years bottle age.” The 2006 Clos
Sénéchal received 94+ points from Gilman who notes “…in my book it is the Clos
Sénéchal that is the number one terroir in the appellation. The bouquet on the
2006 Clos Sénéchal is stunning, as it soars from the glass in a complex mélange
of black cherries, dark berries, menthol, tobacco, espresso, woodsmoke and stony
soil. On the palate the wine full-bodied, deep, pure and backward, with brilliant
transparency, exceptional balance and focus and stunning length and grip on the
profound, young finish. I would give this wine close to a decade to apogee, and
then drink it with wild abandon over the ensuing two or three decades.”

1 - bottle Pax Syrah Nellessen Vineyard Russian River Valley 2006
1 - bottle Pax Syrah Griffin’s Lair Sonoma Coast 2006
1 - bottle Pax Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard Russian River Valley 2007
1 - bottle Pax Syrah Cuvée Moriah 2004
Pax and Pam Mahle moved to wine country in 1997 to pursue careers in wine.
After a few years of tasting and sourcing wine from all over California for Dean
& Deluca, Pax decided to start his own brand from a vineyard he felt a kismet
connection. That vineyard was Alder Springs Vineyard, and after finding an
investor to help realize the dream, Pax Wine Cellars was launched in 2000. The
Mahles decided to make a bold choice by favoring the “untapped potential” of
the Syrah grape. The entire lineup of wines came from cool climate vineyards in
Sonoma County and Mendocino. The wines were big, rich expressions of Syrah
that went on to be highly sought after and quickly established Pax as one of
California’s premier producers of Syrah.

1 - bottle Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 2005
estimated value: $140
111
The 2005 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta was awarded the number one spot
on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 in 2008. “Owner Alexandra MarnierLapostolle and her team created a blend of Chile’s distinctive Carmenère
variety, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the estate’s oldest vines
in Colchagua’s Apalta sub-valley, then kept refining: fermenting in smaller
lots, hand-destemming berries and constructing a gravity-flow winery. All this
came to fruition in the long, warm, dry 2005 vintage, easily Chile’s modern
best. Marnier and new winemaker Jacques Begarie blended in 4 percent Petit
Verdot for the first time, adding aroma and color. Rich and velvety, the 2005
Clos Apalta should reward cellaring.” (96 points) -Wine Spectator

Larger than life vigneron, Roman Bratasiuk redefined Australia’s fine wine
landscape when he established Clarendon Hills in 1990. Knocking on the
door of a local grape grower, a warm friendship grew from a handshake and
harvest season saw him in the vineyard. Gathering the grapes by hand, the
pragmatic vigneron taught himself the art of winemaking and pushed his wines
a little further each year. International critics now consider Clarendon Hills
one of the world’s greatest wine estates. The 2002 Hickinbotham received
92 points from Robert Parker, with “Notes of smoke and earth emerge from
this big, tightly-knit Grenache.” Both the 2001 Liandra and 2002 Liandra
received 93 points from Parker. “The 2001 Syrah Liandra Vineyard offers
up fragrant aromas of acacia flowers intermixed with blackberries, currants,
licorice, and vanilla. Powerful and intense yet surprisingly restrained and
measured, it builds incrementally in the mouth. The beautiful 2002 Syrah
Liandra Vineyard exhibits aromas of pepper, black fruits, acacia flowers, and
subtle new oak. Full-bodied with an expansive mid-palate in addition to a
gorgeously long finish, it is an elegant yet well-endowed Syrah...”

1970 Vintage Port – A Classic Vintage
estimated value: $215
121
1 - bottle Cockburn Vintage Port 1970
1 - bottle Martinez Vintage Port 1970
1970 had ideal growing conditions and produced what is a classic, outstanding
vintage. The port-wines have great balance, good structure, and will age
superbly for decades to come. Declared by all the major port houses, 1970
is one of the finest Port vintages for the last 50 years. The 1970 Cockburn is
only just coming into full maturity. It is typical of the house: full-bodied, rich,
alcoholic and spirited. The wine is meaty, chocolaty, spicy, full-bodied, big and
powerful. The Martinez shows spicy fruit on the nose, but quite faint. Good
texture, with soft and orangey flavors hidden amongst lots of sweet strawberry.
Tannins still showing gently with lively spiciness. Modest complexity, quite
light bodied and acidic. Big aftertaste; long, lively and spicy finish.

12 - bottles of Brian Carter Cellar Trentenaire 2010
131
estimated value: $480
“Petit Verdot, while it has always been a classic Bordeaux grape, is either
avoided entirely or used in very moderate amounts in most Bordeaux blends
of today. When grown in the right site, Petit Verdot has found a great home
in Washington. With its floral aromatic qualities, combined with its inky
hue and powerful structure, this limited production wine is truly special.
Now in its sixth release, it continues my celebration of over three decades
as a Washington Winemaker. I think the unique character of Trentenaire
captures the spirit of my winemaking career: “Make a difference, do it better,
do it well.” The wine is intensely dark in color with aromas of violets, black
raspberries, cedar and roasted meat arising generously from the glass. Well
integrated tannins and food friendly acidity make this an excellent wine to
cellar. Aerating the wine by decanting helps bring out the layers of fruit and
spice on the nose and palate.” -Notes from Brian Carter Cellars

Handmade Pairing Knife from Orchard Steel
estimated value: $250
138
Put this one-of-a-kind Orchard Steel pairing knife to use in your kitchen;
handmade by owner Moriah Cowles and finished with a black walnut handle.
“It all started with a blacksmithing class in college out in Colorado. I fell in
love. That seed of intrigue for the craft followed me home to Vermont, brought
me to the hills of North Carolina, and found me again in Mexico. It led me to
a metalworking school in Maine and eventually, of all places, to Brooklyn New
York, working and learning for two years from my dear friend and mentor Joel
Bukiewicz at Cut Brooklyn. I now have my own metal shop in Sunset Park
where I make my own kitchen knives from start to finish, all in house. I forge,
heat treat, grind, sharpen, make and fit and sculpt the handle pieces and finish
the knives all in the shop.” -Moriah Cowles

2004 Howell Mountain Times Two
estimated value: $145
139
1 - bottle Duckhorn Vineyards Howell Mountain 2004
1 - bottle Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 2004
The 2004 Duckhorn received 95 points from the Wine Enthusiast, “Almost
entirely Merlot, with a few drops of other Bordeaux varieties, this Howell
Mountain red screams for time in the cellar. The tannins bite and dog the
mouth through the long astringent finish. But chew on it for a while and you
hit a deep core of blackberries and currants, and the more the wine warms up
in the glass, the more impressive it gets. Cellar until 2010, and it should reward
for years after.” The 2004 Ladera received 91 points from the Wine Spectator:
“A rustic yet smooth and harmonious style, with dusty berry, mineral, sage and
herb scents that form a complex core of flavors. There’s good intensity, and
the tannins are in check. Ends with a minerally aftertaste, making this a wine
that’s very true to its appellation.” Both are ready to enjoy right now!

1 - bottle Château L’Angelus 1982
estimated value: $275
140
“L’Angelus and its quality-oriented proprietor, Hubert de Bouard de la Forest,
did not begin to turn things around until the mid-eighties. Good wines in
1985 and 1986 were followed by brilliant efforts in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993,
and 1994. L’Angelus can now be counted on to produce one of the top four
or five wines of the St.-Emilion appellation. That being said, readers should
remember that in 1982 there was no selection process and a completely
different wine-making style and philosophy were in place. The 1982, soft and
ripe after bottling, has deteriorated quickly. It reveals considerable amber,
orange, and rust colors… and while it still exhibits some sweet, jammy fruit,
the wine exhibits an old, mushroomy, earthy note. It is in decline and should
be drunk immediately.” (96+ points) -Robert Parker

1 - Magnum Saxum Heart Stone Vineyard 2006
200
estimated value: $200
He may be literally a garagiste, but Saxum’s Justin Smith has 38 Wine Advocate
scores of 95 points or more. Some people work hard to be cool. Saxum’s owner
Justin Smith doesn’t need to try – he just is. He’s a guru for the emerging Paso
Robles fine wine scene but you only know that by talking to people who learned
from him. He made Wine Spectator’s 2010 Wine of the Year and here is your
chance to own a bottle today. The 2006 Heart Stone earned 93 points from
Robert Parker: “A blend of 38% Syrah, 36% Grenache, and 26% Mourvedre...
Justin Smith uses a lot of whole clusters in his fermentation, which seems to give
his wines structure as well as nuance. This is the most French-like of Saxum’s
2006s, and it comes across like a restrained, northern Rhone-like effort that is
only hinting at its ultimate potential.”

3 - Magnums Beaux Frères Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir 2007
202
estimated value: $525
In 1987 Michael Etzel and brother-in-law, Robert Parker, purchased a
run-down pig farm on Ribbon Ridge in Willamette Valley and established
The Beaux Frères Vineyard. Since the first vintage in 1990, the philosophy
remains the same – to produce world class Pinot noir that represents the
essence of the vineyard. The 2007 received 92 points from Stephen Tanzer’s
International Wine Cellar, “Vivid red. Bright red berry and cherry aromas
are complicated by dried rose and brown spices. Tangy, sharply focused red
fruits on the palate, with slow-mounting spiciness and building power. Silky
tannins add grip to the very long, seamless finish. This gained weight with air
but maintained admirable vivacity and clarity.”

Eighteen Seventy-Three Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Jack’s Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Bergfeld Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Craig’s Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Kathryn and Craig Hall are creating an unrivalled destination in the Napa Valley—
where winemaking excellence meets contemporary design to celebrate life and inspire
the senses. Here is a lovely sampling of their Cabernets from 2011.
“Eighteen Seventy-Three” exhibits a dense ruby/purple color. Made from a blend
of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot, the first aromas out of the glass are
like fresh-picked blackberries, transitioning to earthy tones of autumn leaves, smoky
barrel, fresh brewed coffee, and juniper.
Jack’s Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with 4% Petit Verdot and boasts
a dark ruby/purple color. The high-tone, vibrant aromas awaken the memory of very
ripe raspberries warmed by the summer sun, with a floral element of violets, balanced
by sweet, well-integrated French oak. The overall effect is subtle and deep. The palate
is intense and full-bodied with flavors of dark ripe cherry, plentiful satiny tannins and
rich toasted oak on the long finish.
“Bergfeld” Cabernet is a classically Bordeaux blend of 86% Cabernet, 7% Merlot, 6%
Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, all from the Hall Estate vineyard in St Helena. Grown
in the soils of an ancient valley floor riverbed, this fruit yields a restrained, round,
full-bodied wine with particular uniform focus.
“Stags Leap” Cabernet Sauvignon is remarkable for its unbridled immediacy of vivid,
concentrated fruit. Dense ruby/garnet in color, rich and lush on the pallet, with flashy
notes of dark red fruit, cedar and a long, luscious cherry liquor finish.
Kathryn Hall bottling is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fruit selected from a spectrum
of vineyards — from St Helena to Howell Mountain to the Sacrashe estate in
Rutherford. It received 93 points from the Wine Spectator: Beautifully orchestrated,
rich and juicy offering an opulent array of deliciously ripe and layered red and black
fruits, with blackberry, currant and raspberry flavors, shaded by mocha and toastycedary oak nuances. Drink now through 2025.”
“Craig’s Cuvée” is a distinctive, layered blend containing 90% Cabernet Sauvignon,
8% Merlot and 2% Malbec.

2005 vintage, du Tertre remains under most consumer’s radar…It is a
beautifully pure, medium to full-bodied wine with abundant but sweet
tannin, fine opulence, a multilayered texture, and a long finish that is neither
aggressive nor astringent.” while awarding the 2005 Giscours 91 points, “This
forward-styled 2005 possesses a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a big,
sweet bouquet of roasted herbs, fudge, espresso, figs, and cherry jam. Opulent,
even decadent, with low acidity, but high glycerin and fruit extract as well
as a flamboyant fleshiness, this is a stunningly impressive, hedonistic, savory
Margaux...”

The Rhone Valley is a key wine-producing region in southeast France. It
follows the north–south course of the Rhone river for almost 150 miles from
Lyon to the Rhone Delta, near the Mediterranean coast. The region’s wineproducing areas cover such a distance that there is a widely accepted division
between its northern and southern parts. The smaller northern section
focuses almost entirely on Syrah for red wines and Viognier, Marsanne and
Roussanne for whites, while the larger and more prolific south employs a
much longer list of varieties. The most notable of these are the red varieties
Grenache and Mourvedre, which are combined with Syrah to produce the
‘GSM’ blend so characteristic of the southern Rhone. One unifying constant
between the two areas is the regional Cotes du Rhone appellation, which can
be claimed by red, rosé and white wines from all over the valley.

12 - bottles Epicurea de Château Martinat 2009
estimated value: $200
232
“The finest example of this wine I have ever tasted, the 2009 Epicurea de
Château Martinat (80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) was cropped
at 25 hectoliters per hectare. Aromas of flowers, licorice, smoke, red and black
fruits, and subtle wood are followed by a broadly flavored, savory, opulentlytextured wine displaying terrific fruit intensity, purity, and length. It is well
above its humble pedigree, and should drink nicely for a decade or more.” (91

Cabernet Sauvignon has been referred to as the king of red wine grapes.
Cabernet Sauvignons and blends where the variety predominates are some
of the most prized wines produced in California. Cabernet Sauvignons are
dry, full flavored and made to be long lived for many labels. Fans of Cabernet
Sauvignon are familiar with the wine’s common descriptors: berry, currant
and cassis or herbaceous, bell pepper and toasty oak aromas and flavors. Here
is a lovely variety of California Cabernets - all ready to drink!

1 - bottle Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2001
1 - bottle Beaulieu Vineyard BV Tapestry Reserve 2004
1 - bottle Beaulieu Vineyard BV Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Mr. Mondavi believed that wines should reflect their origins, that they are the
product of the soil, the climate, and the careful stewardship of those precious
resources. He also believed in combining the newest techniques and technology
with time-honored winemaking traditions. Robert Parker awarded the 2001
Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 94 points: “A brilliant effort from Mondavi,
the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon,
10% Cabernet Franc and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot) exhibits complex
aromatics of forest floor, sweet black cherry and black currant fruit, vanillin and
lead pencil shavings. Dense and powerful as well as elegant and concentrated,
the finish reveals moderate tannins, and the wine needs another 4-5 years of
cellaring, but it has at least 25 years of upside left.” In 1900, when Georges de
Latour’s wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their
original Rutherford vineyard, she named it “beau lieu,” or “beautiful place.”
Robert Parker notes that the 2004 Beaulieu Vineyard Tapestry Reserve
“possesses ethereal elegance and balance along with more red and blue fruit
flavors and less oak. Medium-bodied, pure and ripe, it can be drunk now or
cellared for another decade.”

3 - bottles Château Branaire-Ducru 2005
239
estimated value: $300
95 points from Robert Parker! “As usual, the 2005 Branaire-Ducru is one of
the more distinctive wines of Saint-Julien. Proprietor Patrick Maroteaux has
turned out another classic…the 2005 is a big, structured, intensely rich effort
with raspberry, blueberry, and spring flower garden characteristics, stunning
purity, full-bodied power, and good underlying acidity as well as harmony.
The hard tannins suggest 8-9 years of cellaring will be beneficial; it should
last for three decades.”

A Heart’s Delight veteran and our favorite one-man-show we are so glad that
George Levkoff is able to join us again. George Levkoff crafts Pinot Noir
the “old-school” Burgundian way, and savvy sommeliers around the country
keep spreading his gospel. And nowhere more so than Las Vegas, where, at last
count, George Pinot Noirs grace the wine lists of nearly 100 top restaurants
( Joel Robuchon, Guy Savoy, Spago and Picasso to name a few). New York
comes close to this number, including iconic spots such as Craft, Jean-Georges,
Marea, and The 21 Club. Closer to home, you’ll find George on just about
every top restaurant in the state such as The French Laundry, Cut, Gordon
Ramsay and ink. The eye-widening list is a testament to the power of these
beautiful wines. Sonoma Coma is a blend of five vineyards, all of which fall
within a one-mile radius in the heart of the Russian River Valley. The Buena
Tierra Vineyard is on Eastside Road across from Rochioli, steps from the river.

Pinot Noir is a difficult grape to grow, this native of the Burgundy region achieves
greatness in only a handful of places worldwide, and the Russian River Valley is one
of those places. The Pinot-perfect climate combined with an amazing complexity
of soil types, results in wines that reflect their individual sites but share a common
thread. Aromas tend to be bright, focused fruit, ranging from wild strawberries and
raspberries to red and black cherries. Notes of cola and baking spices are common. In
the mouth they are rich and velvety, with their high degree of ripeness, kept in check
by bright acidity. This Russian River Valley Pinot Noir variety pack is a great way to
experience the beauty of the grape and the region!

1 - bottle Fonseca Vintage Porto 2009
253
estimated value: $100
“The 2009 Fonseca shows consistent notes to its release. It was a small
production of 6,300 cases compared to the average of 11,000. It has a
quintessential, primal Fonseca bouquet with voluptuous sloes, blackcurrants,
kirsch and sweet fig all suffused with glycerin. The palate is succulent on the
entry, but the copious nascent black fruit belies the structure underneath.
(Indeed, this vintage has the highest anthocyanin count.) This should evolve
into a magnificent port. Drink 2035-2050.” (94 points) -The Wine Advocate

In the heart of the appellation Gigondas, the Château de Saint Cosme is an
exceptional estate with very geologically diverse terrioir due to an exceptional

Andre Lurton Château de Barbe Blanche as having “Fresh blackberry and
raspberry, with a twist of ginger. Medium – to full bodied, with a balance of
currant and berry character.” The Wine Spectator notes that the 2010 Croix

mulled blackberry and bittersweet ganache notes all seamlessly layered and
carrying through the charcoal-tinged finish.”

Receiving 92 points from the Wine Advocate, “…the 2010 Pinot Noir
Bearwallow Vineyard stands apart from all of the other wines in the Rhys
lineup. It possesses precise, brilliant aromatics and finely sculpted fruit.
Overall, the Bearwallow is a subtle, refined Pinot built on finesse, with
gorgeous underlying minerality and tons of class. The 2011 Bearwallow,
receiving 93 points from Stephen Tanzer, is described as: “Vivid red. Strong
raspberry and cherry-cola aromas, with suave floral and Asian spices adding
complexity. Silky and very fresh, with impressively focused red fruit flavors
and a building note of rose pastille. The persistent, gently tannic finish
emphatically repeats the red berry and floral notes and lingers with bright,

1 - bottle Merus Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
257
estimated value: $200
“As for their own wines, all of which come from southern Napa sites in Oak
Knoll and Coombsville, the 2005 is certainly one of the finest wines they
have yet made. A 1,000-case blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest
Petit Verdot and Malbec, the wine is dense purple-colored to the rim, with
an exquisite nose of charcoal, graphite, and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied,
with great power, richness, and sensational length, this wine will benefit from
4-5 years of bottle-age and last three decades. The husband and wife team
of Mark Herold and his graphic designer wife, Erika Gottl, continue to play
an increasingly important role in the production of high quality Cabernet
Sauvignons from Napa, not only with their home wine, called Merus, but
also with their consultancy work for wineries such as Kobalt, Kamen, Hestan,

estimated value: $250
260
“I find that with the wines I admire the most, I seem to have the least to
say about. Unfortunately, saying a wine is “just right” doesn’t communicate
much. This wine has the typical and correct medium color of Pinot. The
aroma has an intense blackberry note with a bit of forest floor and herbal
tones under. The palate is soft and full. If anything it delivers more than
the nose promises. In spite of its plushness, there is a tension between the
tannin and acidity that promises happy marriages with cuisine.” -Tasting

“The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois is also a beauty
– full-bodied, not as tannic as most young vintages of this cuvee tend to be,
with an inky ruby/purple color and a beautiful sweet nose of smoked meats,
creme de cassis, raspberries, licorice, graphite, and camphor. Full-bodied, ripe,
with moderately sweet tannin, this is a wine that uncharacteristically can be
drunk at a relatively early age for Mordoree...” (94 points) -Robert Parker

red, and black fruits, and a hint of damp earth as well as subtle herbs. Spicy,
round, complex, very lush, and at its plateau of maturity, this wine should
continue to drink well for another 10-15 years at minimum. This is Margaux

As Kistler’s lush, exuberant style was widely emulated, it became one of the
first modern California cult wineries, its wines available only in restaurants or
to long-term customers. It was a model for today’s mailing-list avatars of the
full-blown California chardonnay style, like Aubert. Awarded 96 points by
The Wine Advocate, “The 2010 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard brings together
all of the elements of the house style. Layers of fruit emerge effortlessly
from this textured, totally beautiful Chardonnay. Despite its richness, there is
more than enough underlying minerality to buffer the fruit. This is the most
nuanced and detailed of the 2010 Chardonnays from Aubert. Dried apricots,
flowers and mint are some of the many notes that linger on the finish...”
The Kistler also received 96 points: “…The Trenton Roadhouse is all about
textural power and depth. It will appeal most to readers who enjoy the richer
style of California Chardonnay. Layers of fruit build to an explosive finish
that won’t be denied, yet the wine turns intensely mineral, pointed and multidimensional with time in the glass. This is another great showing.”

blackberry, currant, black licorice, spice, cedary oak and mineral notes. Fullbodied, well-structured and focused, ending with a long, persistent finish.”
The 2005 received 93 points from the Wine Spectator, “Firm, rich and

Grower Champagnes are defined as those made by récoltants–manipulants
– about 2,000 growers who make their own wines as well as selling grapes
to the major Champagne houses. As Terry Theise explains, the récoltantmanipulants “handcraft their limited quantities of Champagne from
individual villages and parcels where the inherent qualities of the vineyards
imprint themselves into the wines. These winemakers are brave souls in an
industrialized age: growing, crafting and bottling their own Champagne,
offering it to the world as their life’s work.” This is a wonderful opportunity
to drink well and support those brave souls!

2005 Burgundy Tasting on May 12, 2015 in NYC
310
estimated value: $1,200
You will drink well with 2 tickets to an exclusive 2005 Burgundy tasting to
be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Café Tallulah (240 Columbus Avenue at
71st Street New York, NY ). Ten years in is the perfect time to evaluate this
legendary modern vintage. It is a great way to taste what the critics have said
about the 2005 vintage ten years later. “This is, pure and simple, the finest red
Burgundy vintage of my professional career (I began tasting red Burgundies
in depth with the 1978 vintage)… The classic 2005 is remarkably rich, deep
and full, with high levels of dry extract imbuing it with everything its site
can offer. It’s the whole package: remarkably clean aromas and flavors, full
and often downright silky mid-palate texture, substantial but harmonious
tannins, fresh acidity, and balance and structure for a long life in bottle.”

“Proprietor Berenice Lurton continues to turn out one of the utterly profound
wines from the Barsac Sauternes region. Medium gold, with a slightly more
advanced color than I am used to seeing in a young Climens, the wine
displays waxy honeyed pineapple and delicate marmalade and citrus notes
with a restrained use of new oak. The wine cuts a full-bodied swath across the
palate with terrific acidity, freshness, and moderate sweetness.” (94 points)

In 1995, to commemorate V. Sattui’s 110th anniversary, V. Sattui Winery
bottled a Reserve Stock Madeira. They chose wines from the twenty-four
best and oldest barrels from their solera and bottled this special lot in a
package resembling the original label and bottle shape. They stated then that
the solera was over 80 years old, which is true, but they have since discovered
that it was started far earlier that they had known. This Reserve is a rich,

1 - Magnum Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, signed
Tour & Tasting for 6 at Cardinale Winery
Cardinale, located in the heart of Napa Valley’s world-renowned Oakville
District, crafts a single Cabernet Sauvignon from each vintage. Every bottle
reveals the artistic sensibility of Winemaker Christopher Carpenter. In the
bottle, Cardinale is sophisticated, powerful, and a true expression of Napa.
“Chris Carpenter has done a fabulous job with the 2010 Cardinale. The wine
boasts a huge center of fruit backed up by equally firm, imposing tannins.
Layers of dark red fruit, mocha, cinnamon and new leather explode from the
glass. The 2010 is a huge Cardinale endowed with superb depth, power and
richness. At the same time, there is a mid-palate generosity and pliancy that
leads me to believe the 2010 will drink beautifully once the tannins soften
a touch. Hints of tar, graphite and iron add personality on the full-bodied,
intense finish.” (96 Points) -Wine Advocate

1 - Double Magnum Château Beychevelle 2010
324
estimated value: $750
“Showing better from bottle than it did from barrel, where it was also
impressive, but not quite at this level, the 2010 Beychevelle displays sweet
black currant, black cherry, foresty notes, medium to full-bodied texture with
impressive purity and moderately high tannins (although they’ve softened
considerably during the wine’s upbringing in barrel). Layered and rich for a
Beychevelle, this wine should easily withstand three decades of cellaring. I
would give it another 3-4 years of bottle age, but this is a fabulous effort from
the first Château one sees upon entering the appellation of Saint-Julien.” (94

Rated 92 points by Robert Parker, “The very fine 2006 Pinot Noir Reuling
Vineyard reveals more of a pomegranate character than previous vintages.
Its superb bouquet exhibits notes of forest floor, raspberries, cherries, and
a hint of allspice. Medium-bodied with good acidity, this brilliant Pinot
requires consumption over the next 4-5 years.” Parker awarded the 2007
Reuling Vineyard Pinot Noir 98 points, noting “The exquisite, dark ruby/

Original 1741 Copper Engraved Map of France by Homann Heirs
335
estimated value: $450
In the 18th century the German Johann Baptist Homann (1664--1724) and
his family would become one of the most prominent and recognized map
makers of the century. He was appointed Imperial Cartographer to Emperor
Charles VI in 1715. This map is also interesting from the standpoint that
the map was influenced (dressee) by Guillaume de L’Isle (1675-1726)
who was one of the most prominent French cartographers of the time and
cartographer to the King of France. The map is highly detailed. Note the
elaborate cartouche in the lower left but in particular the two young boys/
cherubs gathering grapes. Maps such as this would have been used throughout
the second half of the 18th century and might have been used as a reference
by Thomas Jefferson (an avid collector of maps) when he embarked on his
celebrated trip of France’s wine producing areas in 1787. Santé!!

roasted herbs, briny olives, saddle leather, and steak tartare. With a round, sweet
entry, medium to full body, a supple, fat mid-palate, and a diffuse but glycerindominated, thick, juicy finish...” Robert Parker awarded the 1982 Canon 93
points and describes it as “An outstanding, dark ruby/purple-hued effort with
little lightening at the edge, the 1982 Canon exhibits plenty of crushed rock, red
and black currant, and dusty, earthy, loamy notes. It is a full-bodied, powerful,
slightly austere Saint-Emilion with moderately high tannins.”

“The 2005 Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard, which is a cool Russian River site, tips

of the long, cool growing season at this site. Notes of bacon fat, violets, blackberry,

In just seven short years, the Kapcsandy Family wines have vaulted from
newbie to cult status among wine lovers nationwide.”The finest two wines of
this vintage include the 2011 Roberta’s Reserve, which is more reserved and
austere than usual. Nevertheless, it still reveals an attractive sweet chocolate
and black currant-scented nose with hints of espresso, spicy oak and fruit, and
a medium-bodied, supple mouthfeel. In 2011, 500 cases were produced.”(91

1 - bottle Château Lafite Rothschild 1999
estimated value: $725
342
“It is a quintessential offering from Lafite Rothschild. This prodigious wine
is both elegant and intensely flavored, and almost diaphanous in its layers
that unfold with no heaviness. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied
by a complex bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, cedar, creme de cassis, toast,
and vanilla. It is medium-bodied, with extravagant layers of richness yet
little weight, and a finish that is all sweetness, ripeness, and harmony. This
extraordinary Lafite increasingly appears to be a modern day clone of the
majestic 1953. A mere one-third of the crop made it into the grand vin!” (95
points) -Robert Parker

1 - Melchior Château Gracia 2001
estimated value: $1,500
343
This big boy is 18 liters and the equivalent of 24 bottles. “...Yields were 19
hectoliters per hectare for this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc
and Cabernet Sauvignon. This brilliant effort boasts a dark ruby/purple color
in addition to an explosive bouquet of raspberry liqueur, crushed stones, white
flowers, and other heavenly delights. The wine hits the palate with plenty of
fruit, body, and richness. Pure, dense, medium-bodied, with moderate tannin
in the finish, if it continues to fill out and live up to its astonishing aromatics,
this will be a blockbuster.” (91 points) -Robert Parker

1 - bottle Pax Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard 2003
4 - bottles Pax Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard 2005
2 - bottles Pax Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard 2006
Pax and Pam Mahle moved to wine country in 1997 to pursue careers in
wine. After a few years of tasting and sourcing wine from all over California
for Dean & Deluca, Pax decided to start his own brand from a vineyard he
felt a kismet connection. That vineyard was Alder Springs Vineyard, and
after finding an investor to help realize the dream, Pax Wine Cellars was
launched in 2000. The Mahles decided to make a bold choice by favoring
the “untapped potential” of the Syrah grape. The entire lineup of wines came
from cool climate vineyards in Sonoma County and Mendocino. The wines
were big, rich expressions of Syrah that went on to be highly sought after and
quickly established Pax as one of California’s premier producers of Syrah.

1 - bottle Hanzell Vineyards Pinot Noir, Sonoma Valley 2006
As a general category, California Pinot Noir has been on fire since the movie
Sideways. In fact, California’s Pinot Noirs are increasingly divergent. The state
offers Pinots for virtually every taste, running the style gamut from pungent,
cool, minerally, and Burgundian to soft, superripe, and chocolaty-sweet. The
latter style of wine, often made from grapes harvested at very high sugar levels,
is popular among those who prefer extremely ripe, lush wines with strong fruit
character and little apparent acidity or tannin. Many of today’s new generation
of wine drinkers -- especially those who did not cut their teeth on European
wines -- gravitate toward this style. On the other hand, most veteran wine
drinkers, especially those whose model for Pinot Noir is red Burgundy, typically
find these new-style wines too roasted and high in alcohol, lacking subtlety
and refinement. But today even the drinker with the most extreme Old World
leanings can find California examples of Pinot Noir that will give pleasure.
Never before have consumers had so many good California Pinot Noirs to
choose from – here is your chance to try for yourself !

The New California Wine by Jon Bonné, signed
This lot was inspired by Jon Bonné’s book, The New California Wine which
is the untold story of the California wine industry: the young, innovative
producers who are rewriting the rules of contemporary winemaking; their
quest to express the uniqueness of California terroir; and the continuing battle
to move the state away from the overly-technocratic, reactionary practices of
its recent past. Jon Bonné writes from the front lines of the California wine
revolution, where he has access to the stories, philosophies, and techniques
of top producers. We will include a signed copy of the book and some of the

2 - bottles Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Brunello di Montalcino 2010
2 - bottles Fanti Brunello di Montalcino 2010
The 2010 La Colombina received 94 points from The Wine Advocate,
“Boasting a beautiful dark color and rich concentration…the grape’s delicate
nuances of dried berry, cassis, blackberry, red earth and pressed rose petal
come through loud and clear. Very pretty mineral tones form dusty accents
on the edges. The mouthfeel and tannic structure are firm and lively. The
Wine Advocate awarded the 2010 Ciacci Piccolimini 94+ points noting “The
bouquet is buoyant and bright with lingering tones of smoke, ash, balsam
herb, licorice and soy sauce. Dry mineral and brimstone also give the wine
a sense of focus, sharpness and cleanliness that is very appealing. The close
is long, fine and polished.” Thirdly, the 2010 Fanti Brunello di Montalcino
earned 92 points from The Wine Advocate. “It shows immediate fruit and
spice and delivers these characteristics in a very direct and matter-of-fact
manner. Sweet cherry and cinnamon make for cheerful end notes.”

The persistent, gently tannic finish
emphatically repeats the red berry and floral notes and lingers with bright,
spicy intensity.”

1 - bottle Château Le Dome 2000
estimated value: $220
356
The term ‘cult’ sits uneasily in Bordeaux - but then so does ‘garage’. Château
Le Dome was created and developed by Jonathan Maltus from different
parcels located close to Château Beau-Sejour Becot, Chateau Canon and
Chateau Angelus. Le Dome is the benchmark estate and wine of Jonathan
Maltus. Jonathan Maltus owns a myriad of other chateaux in Bordeaux, all
of which are located in the Right Bank. The first vintage of Le Dome was
produced in 1996. The wines of Le Dome are expensive, hard to find and have
a unique character, due to the high portion of Cabernet Franc in the blend.
No actual cellars or chateau for Le Dome exists, which is the only reason
the estate is not at a minimum a Grand Cru Classé. “Jonathan Malthus’ 72%
Cabernet Franc (the rest is Merlot) old vines, 1.64 vineyard near L’Angélus
and 32 hl/ha have produced great complexity with an irony nose and spicy,
almost strawberry, fruit. Ending on a mocha note. Superb finesse all through.”

Sauvignon. The vineyard, which sits on the valley floor in the nutrient-rich
flood zone of the Napa River, is comprised of 30-year-old vines and timetested cabernet clones that provide fruit-forward, but structured, wines year
after year. This wine is elegant and feminine, but bold. We have been growing
grapes in this vineyard since the early 1980s, and have been making wines
from these vines since 1999. 2012 proved to be a bountiful and luscious
vintage.”

“I bought this wine for myself because I thought it was a sleeper of the
vintage, and I couldn’t be happier. My score in two tastings was identical to
what it was seven years ago. Chocolatey espresso notes jump from the glass of
this dark ruby/purple-colored wine. Full-bodied, with a silky texture, loads of
concentration and density, this is a beautiful wine that is both hedonistically
and intellectually pleasing. The wine seems to have reached full maturity,
where it should stay for another 10-15 years.” (94 points) -Robert Parker
