Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association Brief for the Production of an HLF Interpretation Plan Introduction The Trustees of the Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association (HSFA) are seeking to appoint an experienced and suitably qualified contractor to develop an Interpretation Plan in support of a Stage 2 Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Heritage Grant application. The contractor will be required to work closely with the Project Director and Trustees to research and write a detailed Interpretation Plan, in line with HLF guidance, to support our application to fund a Holocaust Heritage and Learning Centre at the University of Huddersfield. The Holocaust Heritage and Learning Centre The HSFA plans to create a world class Holocaust Heritage and Learning Centre located within the Heritage Quay at the University of Huddersfield. The project aims to: • Create a permanent, sustainable Holocaust exhibition and learning centre to preserve and communicate the legacy of Holocaust survivors in Yorkshire • Create innovative formal and informal learning programmes to enable the community to learn about and from the Holocaust • Develop and expand our volunteering programme • Preserve and make accessible archive material relating to the Holocaust • Develop local and regional partnerships to achieve our objectives. We are seeking funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support this project. We intend to submit a Stage 2 application to the HLF in December 2015. Services Required We require an Interpretation Plan that will fulfil the requirements of the Heritage Lottery Fund in support of our Stage 2 Heritage Grant application. The successful contractor will be required to work closely with the Project Director, steering group and other project contractors to: • Review existing plans for the Holocaust Learning Centre exhibition in consultation with the University of Huddersfield estates department and work with them to identify any changes necessary to ensure an appropriate design solution for the building • Research best practice in the display and interpretation of Holocaust related subject matter, both within the UK and internationally, and provide advice and recommendations to the Project Director and steering group on how HSFA can lead best practice in the UK. Consideration must be given to sensitivity in the interpretation of the Holocaust in regard to all groups impacted on by the Holocaust and how to provide an experience which is fitting and leads to reflection. 1

Review the HSFA’s existing collections, archive, images and film assets and identify appropriate stories and collections for use with key target audiences Define key learning objectives for Holocaust Heritage and Learning Centre exhibitions and associated interpretive activities Work with the project team to define themes, storylines and guiding principles for the Holocaust Heritage and Learning Centre’s interpretive development, covering the use of 3D and archive objects, digital collections, personal testimony, volunteer speakers and volunteer guides Use the research and development described above to create an Interpretation Plan for the Holocaust Heritage and Learning Centre in line with HLF guidelines, outlining how the Centre will engage key target audiences with the exhibition content in an appropriate and accessible way Contribute to consultation with key target audiences to ensure the interpretation plans communicate our messages effectively in a way that meets their needs and taking full account of the needs of people with disabilities Ensure the Interpretation Plan meets HLF guidance, particularly its guidance on digital technology in heritage projects and good practice guidance on interpretation Liaise closely with contractors working on the Activity Plan, Exhibition Plan and Business Plan to ensure synergy between different strands of work. Outputs We will require an electronic copy of the Interpretation Plan together with any supporting documents and summaries of research undertaken in preparing the work. Timescale The work will begin on appointment of the successful contractor and will need to be completed by 31 August 2015. Budget The budget available for this work is £10,000 including VAT and expenses.
