A RESURRECTION PEOPLE
We are an Easter people! We say “He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!” and
we mean it. We say it on Easter Sunday. We say it each Sunday as we
gather on the first day of the week to worship God and the LIVING
JESUS. We say it each and every day. The knowledge of resurrection is at
the center of who we are as Jesus’ people. We are an Easter people.
This fact of resurrection shapes each and every day and infuses our lives with joy. Unlike the earliest
disciples, we approach Easter with the joy of the living Jesus. With each sunrise, we start the new day in
joyful anticipation of where we will meet the risen Jesus. We are wonderfully surprised as we bump into
Jesus at the table, in the press of work, at family events, and especially in the stranger. Each evening we
rest in Jesus with the knowledge that God gets the first and last word not only of the day but of our very
lives.
All of this makes us people of joy. The rest of the world is puzzled by our joy. Our congregations are
marked by the joy of living in the resurrection. We sometimes struggle to remain in this joy but always and
everywhere the resurrection is the foundation of our lives.
My fervent prayer and desire is that the congregations of the Maryville District are centers of this
resurrection joy which we offer to our surrounding communities.
He Is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!
Grace, peace, AND JOY!

Up-Coming Events
April
Visit WaytoGiveHolston.org to
find bulletin inserts and video resources
that are intended for use in your local
church beginning in February. These
very special pieces provide a challenge
from Bishop Dindy Taylor to commit our
time and our 2015 Annual Conference
Mission Offering to Children and Poverty
in the Holston Conference.
We are providing Bishop Taylor's
video message in the form of a Resource
Guide from the Director of Missions,
which is being sent directly to clergy,
treasurers, finance chairpersons, lay leaders, and lay members to Annual Conference. Please use the print and video resources to issue the invitation to "bring it
home" as we give of ourselves to the
most vulnerable in our communities.
Thank you message resources
from last year are still available at
WaytoGiveHolston.org. They have been
re-purposed for use all year round, to assist you in saying thank you to your congregations for the ministries shared in
2014. Please use these resources in your
congregation.
Thank you, Holston. Let's see
how many lives we can change this
year! Way to go! Way to give!

Hallelujah ! Christ arose! We will be celebrating Easter in a few days and what a glorious day it will be.
Easter brings back fond memories to me. As a child, Mother would dress us (I have two sisters) in our new Easter
outfits, and we would be off to church for sunrise service at six thirty and then morning worship service at ten.
This year many of us will experience a similar routine on Easter morning. I look forward to Easter and the Holy
week that leads up to the celebration of the resurrection of Christ.
The snow and ice seemed to last a long time and I have been excited to see the green leaves springing
forth from the ground that will give us the pretty spring flowers. Finally, the leaves have appeared and the little
yellow and purple flowers are present. It is a joyous time to witness the blooming of flowers and feel the excitement that spring brings. Although we may experience a few more cold days, we know that spring is here.
The Holston Conference Sisters in Service Event was March 13th & 14th in Sevierville. There were 135
(25 from Maryville) young and young at heart women worshiping and praising God. It was a spirit filled and enriching two days. Every year someone says this one was the best. I can hardly wait for next year.
Another Conference Event is Spiritual Enrichment Experience (SEE) on April 25 th & 26th at Lake Junaluska, NC. This will provide a great opportunity for women from all Districts to come together. We catch up
with friends we haven’t seen for a while and make new friends. This truly is United Methodist Women in action.
The District Day Apart is May 2nd at Mountain View UMC. Rev. Gaye King will lead us in a workshop,
“A Bead and a Prayer” based on a book written by Kristen E. Vincent. The author is married to a United Methodist Minister and lives in Georgia. If you are interested in a more meaningful and focused prayer life, you will not
want to miss this. Each person will make her own set of prayer beads and there will be a variety of beads from
which to choose. The workshop starts at 1:00 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. Cost is $8.00.
Join Our Team!
The search for future officers for Maryville District United Methodist Women never ends. We
are always looking for “a few good women”. Step out in faith and let one of our nomination committee
members know that you want to make a difference and share your talents with other. Whatever the
position, there is a whole team to back you up!

Marriage Ministries
This year Holston Conference begins the second decade of offering weekend marriage enrichment retreats
for couple in professional ministry in our churches. These retreats are designed to provide quality time for married
couples during a weekend away from work and family responsibilities. All the cost for housing, meals, and leadership are covered by the Holston Conference.
Two changes have taken place in this ministry.
First, because the Retreat Center at Buffalo Mountain is no longer available, the retreats will be held at the
Carson Springs Baptist Conference Center near Newport, Tennessee. We are fortunate to have the use of this facility
that is in a beautiful setting with comfortable accommodations at a convenient location.
Second, because Partners In Crisis is providing additional funding, we are able for the first time to schedule
two retreats. April 10-12 and May 15-17, 2015. Couples may select the date that is most convenient for them.
Someone who participated in a previous retreat wrote: “This is such a wonderful weekend! I feel rested and
renewed and ready for what comes next.”
Information about the retreat and a registration form are included in a brochure that is available from Pete
and Ginny Rowlett (865-966-9776 or [email protected]) or from the district office. Also, a Leadership Training Workshop will be held at Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Knoxville on June 26-30, 2015. Open to both
laity and clergy, this event prepares couples to lead marriage education and enrichment programs that empower couples to build stronger marriages. Contact the Rowletts for more information.
