MISSION STATEMENT
Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we celebrate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by
Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as
we Continue Our Journey of Faith.
5th Sunday in Lent B-2015
My brothers and sisters in the Lord!
Jeramiah’s passage begins with the words, “See the days are coming…” The second reading of
the letter to the Hebrews speaks of how Jesus is looking beyond His life on earth and, in the Gospel, Jesus
says, “the hour has come.” When you think about it, we still live in that hour; it is still unfolding in our
lives. Even though it is true that He has died and risen again already, to live in Christ is to live in His death as well as His rising to
new life. Our lives are full of small deaths and small resurrections. When we confess our sins, we join with Jesus in His Eucharist,
we make sacrifices and take risks for His sake, then something in us dies and something new is born again. We can live many years
without allowing this death and resurrection to take place in our lives. We may not choose to change but sometimes it is outside
circumstances which force a change on us. This can be the grace of God for us but only if we have faith and hope.
Each year we are called upon to live, in a special way, both Christ’s death and His resurrection, to prepare us for that
paschal moment that will happen in every life. The seed has to stop being a seed if it is going to be what a seed is meant to be. If we
live our lives in a perpetual winter and all living memory had forgotten the spring, how shocked we would be when a new spring
finally came. We would call it the death of winter, unable to imagine that this was not death but a newness of life. St. Paul tells us
that we are to walk in the newness of life. Jesus walked in the greatest darkness possible, the rejection of salvation itself, yet He
entered into that darkness and faced up to it with His human emotions, showing us that fear is to be overcome by hope and love.
The art of travel is knowing what to pack but the experienced traveler also knows what to pack. We will gain more from
Lent if we see it not just as a temporary giving up of things but, rather, training in letting go of everything that holds us up on the
journey to the kingdom. Jesus teaches us to travel lightly. The more demanding the journey, the steeper the road, the more we have
to unburden ourselves.
During the Lenten Season, we can learn about how demanding the journey to eternal happiness can be. It may not be the
material things of which we are called upon to let go, but we may need to let go of the attitudes, emotional binds, compulsions,
automatic responses to situations; in short, the false sense of self that hides the true self which is being created in Christ. It is now, in
these last two weeks of Lent, that we can consider the magnitude of the journey which Jesus has asked us to pursue. And yet it is not
a journey we make on our own; if we look ahead, He is there, and we follow.
Peace,
Fr. Joe

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
“I will be their God and they shall
be my people.” - Jeremiah 31:33
What does it mean to be God’s
people? It means we recognize
that everything we have and
everything we are belongs to God.
We aren’t “owners” of anything; we
are merely “stewards” of the gifts
God has given us. It means we are
willing to use our gifts and our lives to
care for our neighbors and the world, just as
God cares for us.

FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION
In 2012, we started a chain of prayers to Jesus in the
Blessed Sacrament from our home and place of
work. (see poster by the main entrance in the Church).
This year, 2015, the Knights of Columbus are
organizing a First Friday Adoration in the Chapel,
beginning on the First Friday at 7:00 PM to Saturday, 8:00
A.M. We do not want to limit the adoration to one of our
Knights every hour, but would like to invite all the people of
the parish to participate in this expression of love to Jesus in
the Blessed Sacrament. You can spend one hour with Jesus in
the Chapel or just a half hour, or ten, fifteen minutes. You can
do it along or as husband and wife, or parents and children. The
love and adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament will help
both our family and our parish to achieve extraordinary
spiritual growth. There will be at least one person for each hour
of day and night, but what a beautiful demonstration of love
would be if two or three, or even ten persons would come to
keep company to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament every hour.
After all, He is there day and night for our love. If you wish to
participate, please call Val Frattaroli at 973-759-4811 or Sal
Bongiovanni at 973-751-4366, to let them know the hour you
wish to choose. HOURS: Friday, 7-8-9-10-11 PM / Saturday,
12-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 AM
Bible Blitz! A collection of new and gently used
Bibles is underway. Help us to spread the Word of
The Lord to those who cannot afford a Bible. You
may leave the bibles in the Church vestibule on the
ledge below the TV screen or drop them off at the
rectory.

commitment and excellence in the areas of Business,
Education, Civic Affairs, Public Health and Safety and to one
Outstanding Individual between the ages of 21 and 40. Holy
Family parishioners, Michelle Fleitell has been awarded Civic

ANewUnderstandingofMourning
Each individual experiences grief in their own way.
The bereaved needs the witness and engagement of
others. They need to find meaning in their loss and
understand the impact of this significant death on
their lives. Mourning is a lifelong process and
often continues to be revisited at crucial periods and integrated
over a lifetime.
Certified Bereavement Facilitator Patricia Little, will host a
bereavement group on Wednesday evenings in the St. Anthony
Room of the Parish Center. Please call Patricia to register if
you plan to attend: 973-985-5303

WASHING OF THE FEET
Jesus came “not to be served but to
serve, and to give His life as a
ransom for many.” The humility
expressed by His act with towel and
basin foreshadowed His ultimate act
of humility and love on the cross.
Peter was profoundly uncomfortable
with the Lord washing his feet and
protested, “You shall never wash my
feet!” Then Jesus said something that
must have shocked Peter: “Unless I
wash you, you have no part with me” (John 13:8), prompting
Peter, whose love for the Savior was genuine, to request a
complete washing. When Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, He
told them (and us), “I have given you an example, that you
should do as I have done to you” (John 13:15).
As His followers, we are to emulate Him, serving one another in
lowliness of heart and mind, seeking to build one another up in
humility and love. We need 12 volunteers to have their feet
washed at the Holy Thursday 7:00 PM Mass. We hope to have
those who have never had their feet washed before come forth
and volunteer for this.
Please call Sr. Eileen at the rectory and she will make the
arrangements. Thank you!
