MISSION STATEMENT
Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we celebrate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by
Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as
we Continue Our Journey of Faith.
5th Sunday in Ordinary time B-2015
My brothers and sisters in the Lord!
It is so easy for us to be wrapped up in our lives, the daily routine, the demands that
simple existence makes upon us, and so we might lose sight of our true purpose and calling. Like Job, we can be left struggling with our existence and we fail to find meaning in
our lives. We can be consumed with sickness, mental illness, stress and anxiety, and with
all of this our lives feel like no more than, “pressed for service and hired drudgery.” But
that highly-charged, symbolic good deed of Jesus points a way forward for us. Simon’s
mother-in-law, who is totally incapacitated by her illness, is restored by Jesus’ touch, not
simply to health but to service, as we see how she immediately gets up and serves her
guests. She is “helped” by Jesus and she begins to “wait” on them. In other words, her encounter with Jesus
transforms her suffering into the freedom to serve. This Gospel message is a lesson the disciples struggle to
learn, that is, that true greatness lies in service, for Jesus Himself came not to be served but to serve.
The mission of Jesus was to heal but this healing was accomplished on the cross and was a healing of
the whole of humanity, as well as the whole of creation. Those of us, who, like Simon’s mother-in-law, are
touched by Jesus, are raised to serve like Him, to continue the mission of bringing healing and wholeness in
our world. So many people are weighed down by the burdens of suffering and trapped by external forces of
oppression and poverty, or enslaved by internal compulsions and addictions. The response of Jesus, as well as
Christians, is to do more than simply ask, “Why?” We are called to engage actively, by proclaiming the nearness of God’s kingdom through lives of loving service.
Peace,
Fr. Joe
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
“Last rites” is a persistent but pesky phrase in the Catholic lexicon, and not a
particularly useful phrase since it props open the door to misunderstanding. Many Catholics presume it refers to the anointing of the sick, yet there is nothing “last” about it.
Clearly, the Church desires anointing to be celebrated fairly early on in the crisis of illness, and not as a last measure. The Rites for the Dying stand apart in the Church’s plan,
and include two principal rites. The first is viaticum, Latin for “food for the journey,” the
reception of Holy Communion by a dying person. Even very active and aware Catholics
often do not realize that this “last rite” does not require a priest’s presence, but can be
conducted by a deacon or minister of Holy Communion.
The second “last rite” in the pastoral plan is a prayer called “Commendation of
the Dying.” Similarly, this does not require the presence of a priest, but can be led by any
minister or family member. Too often, we have focused on what only a priest can do, namely anoint, and have forgotten
the fullness of liturgical care that the Church desires for its dying faithful. The “last rites” are completely available to us
even when a priest is not.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
“Rising very early before dawn, he left and
went off to a deserted place, where he
prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on to the
nearby villages that I may preach there
also. For this purpose have I come.’” Mark 1:35, 38
In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect
example of stewardship. Jesus gives His
time to do all that God wishes - healing the
sick and preaching. Yet, Jesus also makes
time to be alone in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time
with God, that we find the strength to do what God wishes us
to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God.

GOOD SHEPHERD ACADEMY NEWS!
Good Shepherd Academy-Nutley Attends March for Life 2015
Students of GSA-Nutley participated in the annual pilgrimage for March for Life in
Washington, DC, on January 21-22, 2015. They were joined by their Principal, Sr. Jane Feltz,
MPF, and Middle School teacher, Ms. Alvina Babu, together with the Knights of Columbus and
Holy Family parishioners. They began their time in Washington with a Mass at the Basilica of the
National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, joining hundreds of seminarians, deacons and
priests, bishops and cardinals.
On Thursday morning, they attended mass and toured the St. John Paul II National Shrine.
At 1:00 pm, they joined thousands of people at the March for Life up Constitution Ave. Some
carried signs, some chanted various pro-life slogans, some prayed and others simply supported the
cause through their presence.
When the pilgrims reached the U.S. Supreme Court building, the conclusion of the March,
they gathered in prayer led by Father John Gordon.
Bryan Grullon, a 7th grader, said, “It’s a great life experience and it gave me an
opportunity to see and meet people who share the same beliefs and the same cause.”
For only $20 a ticket, you have 60 chances to win $75-$425 in cash prizes. Beginning March 2
through May 22, there will be weekly drawings with 5 winners, one for each day of that week.
After each drawing, winning tickets are put back in the pool for more chances to win!
If interested, please contact Mrs. Leo at 973-667-2049 Ext. 100.
