BAPTISM: Baptisms are scheduled once a month
on Sunday afternoons except during Lent.
Expectant parents are asked to contact the rectory
to schedule an appointment at least three months
before the desired date of Baptism. Parents must
attend a special catechetical session prior to the
Baptism.
MARRIAGE: Couples should contact the rectory
one year in advance of the proposed wedding date
in order to allow for the proper pre-marital
preparation. At least one person must be a
registered parishioner of Holy Family.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK: This is a
sacrament not only for those who are at the
point of death. As soon as anyone begins to be
in danger of death from sickness or old age,
we encourage you to call for a priest in the
rectory.
MINISTRY OF THE SICK: The Eucharist
will be brought to the homebound. Please
contact the Rectory with the names and
addresses of parishioners who are ill or
homebound.
VOCATION: Women and men who feel
called to the religious life, and men called to
Holy Orders, should contact the Vocations
Office at 973-497-4365.
EMERGENCY CALLS: In case of an
accident or sudden illness, call the rectory at
any hour or reach us on the emergency phone,
973-715-3108. The priest on duty will return
your call.

6th Sunday in Easter B-2015
My brothers and sisters in the Lord,
In the first reading today, we hear one of the most important teachings we will ever learn and one that
St. Peter needed to learn. Putting it plainly, God does not have any favorites. Everyone who does what is right
is acceptable to God. There are no barriers, no dividing lines that separate us from one another. No race, no
color, no creed. In Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord tells us that not even enemies are to
be treated differently. He tells us, “Love your enemies and do good to those who treat you badly.” This
teaching can be seen in practice on every page of the Gospels, where Jesus is confronted regularly by His
opponents. He treats them all with fairness, openness and honestly. This fair dealing with difficult people is
love in action. It comes to its high point on Calvary, when the dying Jesus asks the Father to forgive those who
crucified Him with the words: They know not what they do.”
At the Last Supper Jesus gives us the commandment to, “love one another, as I have loved you.” Love is not just a feeling.
It is a response to God’s loving us first, and a grace of Christ to love others. The love of God inspires us to love others and to make
no exceptions. The simple words we must always remember, “Those who honor me I will honor.” We honor the Lord by the simple
and faithful observance of His commandment, “Love one another.”
Today we celebrate and honor the special gift of our mothers, both living and deceased. It is a day
to give thanks to God for this precious gift. Each one of our mothers has given us the gift of life. Each one
of our mothers has given us their own special legacy of love. Each mother created by our heavenly Father
so unique, so different, each with her own special talents. Let us pray for them that the Lord gives them
good health and that we may always respect and honor them. And for those who have gone home to the
Lord, may they be at peace and rewarded for the life and love they have given us.
A reminder to keep in your prayers the men who will be Ordained as Deacons next Sunday, May 17, at 12:00 noon in the
Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Among those being ordained is one of our own parishioners, Vincent D’Agostino. Please
pray for Vincent and his classmates as they make this step toward the priesthood.
The following Saturday, May 23, is Priesthood Ordination. We pray for the men being ordained to the Priesthood of our
Lord Jesus. Among those being ordained is Deacon Antonio who has been with us his year. He will have his Mass of Thanksgiving,
Saturday 30, at 5:30 PM. Please return the response form found in this bulletin for the reception following mass. Please continue to
pray for all vocations and especially for an increase to the priesthood as well as the Religious Life.
A Blessed and happy day to all the women of our parish, may our Blessed Mother, Mother of all, intercede for us and bring
our prayers to the throne of our heavenly Father.

A Child’s Angel
Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born.
One day he asked God:
“They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow,
but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?”
“Among the many Angels, I chose one for you;
she will be waiting for you and will take care of you.”
“But tell me, here in Heaven, I don’t do anything else but sing
and smile, that’s enough for me to be happy.”
“Your Angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every
day.
And you will feel your Angel’s love and be very happy.”
“And how am I going to be able to understand when people
talk to me if I don’t know the language that men talk?”
“Your Angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words
you will ever hear and with much patience and care, your
Angel will teach you how to speak.”
“And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?”
“Your Angel will place your hands together and teach you how
to pray.”
“I’ve heard that on earth there are bad men. Who will protect
me?”
“Your Angel will defend you, even if it means risking her life!”
“But I will always be sad because I won’t see you anymore.”
“Your Angel will always talk to you about me and will teach
you the way for you to come back to me, even though I will
always be next to you.”
At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices
from earth could already be heard and the child in a hurry asked
softly, “Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my
Angel’s name.”
“Your Angel’s name is of no importance - - you will call your
Angel ‘Mommy’.”

The Great Mission
Dear Parishioners,
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has encouraged
Christians to announce the love of Christ to
everyone and the good news that death has
been vanquished and the gates of Heaven are
now open! Catholics throughout the world
responded this Easter Season by embarking on
a Great Mission to announce the Gospel to the
world in the streets and public spaces. In
Nutley, join us as we proclaim, “Christ Risen!”
this Sunday afternoon and next week, May
17th, at 4:00, near the Clock Tower Courtyard on Franklin
Avenue between Centre and William Streets. Brothers and
sisters, there is no greater privilege than to announce the love
of God, Jesus Christ’s victory over death, and eternal life being
offered freely to all. Everyone is invited to attend and I
encourage you to pray that this mission produces much spiritual
fruit.

MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA
The Miraculous Medal Novena is every Monday
at 7:00 PM, in the Mother Cabrini Chapel.
Novena consists of devotional prayers to the
Miraculous Medal and St. Jude, and the
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. On
national holidays, Novena prayers are offered at
8:45 AM, just prior to the 9:00 AM Mass.

Seminary’s 35th Annual
Cornerstone Golf Outing and
Dinner will be held on Thursday,
June 18, 2015, at Essex Fells Country Club. Golfer registration
at 11:00 AM. Honorees are Monsignor Robert F. Coleman,
J.C.D., and Monsignor Thomas P. Nydegger, V.G., Ed. D.
Single golfers are $450; foursomes are $1,800. Following the
round of golf, there will be a reception, dinner, a prize raffle
and a cash raffle. Non-golfers are invited to cocktails & dinner
at 5:30 PM for $200. Proceeds support the men preparing for

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
With June not far off, attention in the parish turns to the celebration of weddings. Perhaps no other area of parish life
is more shaped or challenged by the expectations of our culture. An old Irish proverb, “Marry in Lent and you’re soon to
repent,” is amplified by another warning: “Marry in May and rue the day!” Memories of old pagan parties in May
endured, and the Irish felt wedding receptions in May would be a stress on community morals. Queen Victoria did not
approve of May weddings either, and her influence is still felt on family calendars, as is her daughter’s introduction of
the white wedding gown. Sometimes we mistake customs and curiosities for tradition. Tradition with a capital “T” has to
do with Christ’s miraculous rescue of the wedding feast at Cana, his affirmation of a man and woman pledging lifelong
fidelity at the heart of a community’s feast. The Church cherished that memory over time, but it took a millennium for
us to think of marriage as a sacrament. Much of the rest of what we associate with weddings has to do with culture,
customs, and family practices. A wise rabbi once said that “tradition is not wearing your father’s hat; tradition is having
a child.” Don’t let Queen Victoria reign over your wedding plans!
