The enthralling Passion Narrative is not simply a drama about the death of Jesus. It invites us to find our place in the story. We have the opportunity to choose how we will follow Jesus, whether courage or cowardice will mark our own discipleship. THIS WEEKEND PALM SUNDAY BOOK & BAKE FAIR Our Parish School will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair and Bake Sale in the Wortman Center after all masses. The Last Supper narrative shows us the heroic selfoffering of Jesus as he stands between tales of betrayal and denial. Before the Meal begins, an unnamed woman pours away nearly a year’s wages with the perfumed oil she uses to anoint Jesus. She reaps no personal reward for this action, but for her courage and self-sacrifice, Jesus declares that her memory will become part of his gospel for all time. Quite an astonishing recognition! Purchase religious/secular books for Easter gifts. ∗ Bring your camera for pictures with the Easter Bunny. ∗ Enjoy baked goods, coffee and buy some holiday treats for family & friends. ∗ Festive Easter Basket Raffle. Come Out & Support our Parish School! Cash, check, credit accepted. Compare her response to Jesus on that night with how Judas responds. Judas, who shares the indignation of others present at this “display” and “waste,” leaves to make a devil’s bargain with the chief priests over the life of his teacher. Which disciple will we be: the anonymous woman of wise action or the follower who does his evil under cover of darkness? Please remember in your prayers this week our RCIA candidates and their sponsors. At the Easter Vigil our catechumens and candidates will become full members of our parish family. On the far side of the Last Supper is Peter’s denial. While Judas’ betrayal simply hastened the arrest of Jesus that was already in the works, Peter’s disavowal of Jesus was personal and pivotal. Barely an hour earlier Peter had sworn that his faith in Jesus could not be shaken. Yet he slept through Jesus’ agony in the garden and did not awaken to the superficiality of his loyalty until it was three times too late. Mark inserts another nameless character here to underscore Peter’s plight—and ours—in the young man wrapped in a linen cloth who runs away naked from the dangerous hour. The cloth suggests the attire of the baptized. It is swept away by a grasping hand revealing that outward signs of faith mean nothing if they are not also deeply internalized. Those who leave the side of Jesus in the critical hour are truly naked and vulnerable. Mark asks us to contrast all of these images with that of Jesus, sitting at supper, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” Take it, and never forsake it. Stewardship Thought Good stewards strive to conform their lives to that of Christ - emptying themselves of all pride and putting themselves at the service of others. Our March 22nd offerings amounted to $19,791.65 Our Rice Bowl offerings amounted to $3,569.63 Sincere thanks for your spirit of stewardship! ∗ ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT On Good Friday, there will not be adoration. Adoration will be on Holy Thursday after the 7PM mass until 11PM. PLEASE BE INFORMED… • IN PREPARATION OF EASTER, please remove all Christmas decorations or old/unwanted items from the graves of your loved ones . Graves should be cleaned off as soon as possible. Flowers on the Shrines are In Honor of The Living and Deceased Members Of The Holy Family Sick & Relief Society This weekend we extend a warm welcome to the men of the Holy Family Sick & Relief Society to the 9AM Mass As a tradition, the men process from the Club to church and attend mass as a body. Mass is followed by an annual Palm Sunday Communion Breakfast. Although the Sick & Relief Society is not a parish organization, we have always had warm and cooperative ties with them. The Sick & Relief Society annually sponsor a band at our parish festival and host the Holy Family Breakfast with Family & Friends. We thank them for their continued generosity and commitment to our parish! The Holy Family Club began on June 15, 1915 and has been an active part of the Nazareth community ever since. The founding members of the club had specific purposes for the Club’s formation. First and foremost the “Club” was founded with the intent of assisting its active members when in time of need. The primary function of the “Club” is to maintain a funeral fund and to render aid in case of sickness or disability to its active members. The second primary purpose for the formation of the “Club” is for the promotion of Christian life in the spirit of the Roman Catholic Church. The founders also envisioned a place they could gather for socialization. Today the Holy Family Sick and Relief Society of Nazareth, now referred to as “The Club” has an active membership of over 300 and a social membership of well over 2,000. The social facility at the “Club” downstairs offers a full service bar, The Holy Grill, billiard table, dartboards, and bowling lanes with automatic scoring. Local bowling leagues make the “Club” their home throughout the year. The Club also serves as an excellent place for weddings, banquets, anniversaries, etc. From small affairs, which would utilize the cocktail room, to the luxurious dining room for large affairs. For more info. on joining the Club or booking an event, please call (610) 759-7887.
