SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
“This is my commandment: love one another as I love

This week, I spent my limited free
time working on some home improvement
projects between the numerous parish and
Diocesan commitments. Last weekend,
two of the parishioners and I removed a lot
of kitchen wallpaper. Then, on my day off
on Tuesday, I assisted with some carpentry work in the
rectory in the morning and spent the afternoon scraping the
ceiling of the dining room with a putty knife of the “cottage
cheese” look. I am waking up many mornings stiff and sore,
but I remember coming home from the seminary and also
waking up stiff and sore having spent a lot of time behind a
school desk. My Mother would say, “You are sore because
you are not used to working!” No doubt, she was right!
I say these things not for sympathy, but for spiritual
reasons. For, as I am vacuuming up debris and washing
floors at 11:30 P.M. on Tuesday night, my Mother comes
into my mind. How often when we are young and as
teenagers, we perhaps saw so clearly the shortcomings in
our parents. Many of us made an unfair vow in our youth
that we would “not be like our Mom or Dad” when we
grew up.
Then we grow up, and late on a Tuesday night on our
hands and knees we realize once again that we have become
our Mother or our Father. It is a good thing to know that we
have matured and that we have taken on the good physical
and spiritual ethos of our parents and those who assisted the
Lord in bringing us into the light of day and into the light of
our faith life.
On this Mother’s Day (and equally as we celebrate
Father’s Day on June 21st), it is important for us to recall the
parental efforts of these special people, regardless if they are
still living or deceased. For the older I become, the more
humbled I become at all that my parents did for me while I
was growing up and well beyond into my adult years.
The gospel from St. John conforms beautifully to this
weekend, in which we nationally honor those women we
affectionately call “Mother” or “Mom” or “Mama”; for
there is truly no greater love than to lay down one’s life for
another. No doubt, so many of our mothers and fathers
have sacrificed, in spades, for us, their children.
Recently, you may have seen on the local Twin Cities
news about a family of eight children who had been largely
adopted and living in a house that had even been inspected
by government health-care workers. The point of the story
was the incompetency of the government agency as the
house was not fit to live in either for humans or animals.

What struck me as I watched that report of rooms filled
with garbage, black mold, dead cats, stench, un-working
bathrooms and the list goes on; I could only feel gratitude.
Gratitude that I had a Mother who even ironed our shirts that
we wore out to the field. A Mother who always had a nice
meal on the table. A Mother who always had chores for us
to do even if we claimed we had a lot of homework and had
no time. A Mother who worked 14 hour days painting,
gardening, washing, mowing, cleaning, but on Sunday came
down the sidewalk for Mass and looked as though she had
stepped out of the pages of Vogue.
Prayers and blessings go out to my Mother and all
mothers (both living and deceased) who have given their
life-blood for their family. May today be but a small
opportunity for us the children of God to say “thank you”
with physical gifts for the living and the spiritual gifts
of prayer for the deceased for all that our parents have done
for us children.

STEWARDSHIP
We made budget again this week, (and actually passed
it), when normally collections in many parishes already
start taking a gentle down-turn. Thank you for making our
job in the parish office and as pastor so much easier.
This week we paid off (several weeks early), in the
spirit of “Mother’s Day weekend”, all of the remaining
monies that are owed to the “Mother Church”, the Diocese
of New Ulm, before the close of the fiscal year on June
30th. This amount came to $14,235.22. So, we now owe a
little more than $65,000.00 to Loyola between now and
June 30th. Hopefully, we will have great support for our
auction that will be held this Wednesday evening!
I also want to give to you an interesting little
stewardship statistic. This week my bookkeeper informed
me that in the previous two fiscal years, the total offerings
from our children was slightly higher than a $1,000.00 or
at $1,130.00 and $1,220.00 respectively. This past fiscal
year, we are already standing at nearly $2,500.00 for the
junior offering. With modest offerings between now and
the end of June, we anticipate that our youth will have
given this year THREE TIMES the previous year’s
offerings! Our hats go off to our young people and most
especially to our Mothers and our Fathers who are taking
our young people to church every week! God bless you!

The Greater Mankato Catholic Youth Ministry Board is
seeking a full-time Joint Youth Minister to direct the
planning, implementation and evaluation of a Youth
Ministry program with 2 Catholic parishes in Mankato for
youth in grades 6-12.

ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE BIKES –
SATURDAY JUNE 30TH!
When we have arrived in May we have
not only arrived in the spring of the year,
but it is also a time to spring on top of your
bike. With two moves in two years, I have not had much of
a chance to ride my bike but I hope to change that pattern of
behavior as the spring and summer progress! Following the
5:00 P.M. Mass, June 30th, I will offer a prayer and bless all
the bikes of young and old around 6:00 P.M.
More than 700 people are killed annually in bicycle
accidents in the United States alone. This averages to about
two Americans dying every day from bicycle accidents! We
need to have a blessing (and to wear our helmet) to insure
that we will be able to ride our bike for many years to come.
(My Mother drove a two wheel bicycle until she was 88!) I
hope to break her record!
Please plan to park your bikes on the north lawn of the
church. Treats will be provided for all who participate! We
hope to see you there!!!
CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN
Next week, our parish will take up the Collection for the
Catholic Communication Campaign. This collection
communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media
activities and enriches our faith through podcasts,
television, radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds
remain in our diocese and support local needs, so please be
generous in this collection.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
The month of May is action packed to say the least.
From 4th graders attending the Children’s Theater and Art
Institute in Minneapolis, to the 5th graders conducting their
space shuttle missions, the 7th graders exploring the outdoors
on Lake Jefferson, the 8th graders seeing if their rockets
really do fly, and the students in Grades K – 5 celebrating
Literacy Week. We will also celebrate our seniors at their
Baccalaureate Mass on Wednesday, May 13th, 7:00 P.M. in
the Blessed Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger Chapel on the
Good Counsel Campus. We invite you to this beautiful
Mass. Graduation for our high school seniors will be on
Sunday, May 17th, at 7:00 P.M. in the gym on the Good
Counsel Campus.
The May concert for Grades 5-8 band and Grades 7-8
choir will be held on Tuesday, May 19th, at 7:00 P.M. in the
theater on the Fitzgerald Campus. Feel free to join us for this
final concert of the school year.

SPRING COMMUNAL ANOINTING
Holy Rosary Church is planning two spring communal
anointing services for our seniors and those that are in a
health situation that would benefit from the healing holy oil
of the Sacrament of the Sick. The first communal anointing
will be held on Thursday, June 4th during the Mass at
10:15 A.M. at Pathstone care facility (the address of
Pathstone is 718 Mound Ave, Mankato, MN 56001.) The
second communal anointing will be held on Monday, June
8th during Mass at 4:00 P.M. and followed by a potluck
supper in the church basement at 5:00 P.M. Please plan to
attend. The next communal anointing will be later this year
in the late fall or early winter!

Because of your generosity, we had the
stewardship means to pay off the remaining amount of
stewardship that we owed to the Diocese of New Ulm
in the amount of $14,235.22. Now, we have only one
area to go, which is our Loyola subsidy!
I pray, with a rental reimbursement that we submitted
to Loyola as well as the money that we will take in the
auction this week, that next week I can report that we are
well below $50,000.00 that we owe in remaining subsidy!
Since we gave such a sizable amount of monies to the
Diocese of New Ulm, we did not give any monies to
Loyola this week. Again this week we have received a
good number of items for our auction. Keep them coming
until next Tuesday! Every donation is another dollar from
the auction as well as the garage sale. Make sure you come
out on Wednesday for something to eat! We hope to see
you all there and support Catholic education and our
parish of Holy Rosary!
FR. ED ARDOLF ENDOWMENT FUND
This fund is now at $131,652.00. 85% of the earnings of
this fund go to pay tuition at Loyola Catholic School for
Holy Rosary families. Contributions to this fund may be
dropped off at the parish office or sent to Amy at Loyola.
RETIREMENT RECOGNITION
The date for the retirement recognition has been
changed (due to the honoree’s schedules) to Sunday, June
14th, following the 10:00 A.M. We will honor those that are
retiring and stepping down from their positions that include
Maggie Bennett, Sue Cashman, Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer
and our two part-time youth ministers Kevin Mettler

OPEN HEARTS OPEN DOORS
RECOGNITION BRUNCH
A 7.8‐magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in the late
morning of April 25th, toppling buildings and homes,
causing widespread panic, and claiming thousands of lives.
We all mourn the terrible suffering of our brothers and
sisters affected by this powerful earthquake. Please join with
the Catholic community across the United States in
responding to our suffering brothers and sisters through a
special collection for the work of Catholic Relief Services in
Nepal.
Bishop LeVoir has requested that all parishes in the
Diocese of New Ulm take up a second collection for our
affected brothers and sisters as soon as possible. This will be
a diocesan collection that will be taken here at Holy Rosary
on the weekend of May 23rd and 24th. Please remit the funds
to the diocese and one check will be forwarded to Catholic
Relief Services. These funds will be used to support the
efforts of CRS (our official international humanitarian
agency) as we respond to immediate emergency needs for
such necessities as water, food, shelter and medical care as
well as the long-term needs to rebuild the communities in
the regions affected by widespread destruction.
Each spring Open Door Health Center holds a brunch
fundraiser to support service delivery. This year, the brunch
is being held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Kato Ballroom,
200 Chestnut Street (rear entrance), in Mankato, starting at
10:00 am (doors open at 9:00 am). Tickets are $40 each. If

REBOOT! LIVE!
SAVE THE DATE: Holy Rosary has, in conjunction
with the other Parishes in the Mankato area, secured a
world-class event: Reboot! Live!, for September 30th, 2015
from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm. Reboot! Live! will be held at the
Fitzgerald Campus in Mankato and will feature Chris
Stefanick. The evening will center around a practical
exploration and understanding of our faith, and all the
ways it’s meant to impact our lives, including: prayer
and spirituality, work, dating, marriage, parenting, health
and more.
