Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
On Saturday night the Year 6 Confirmation candidates will be presented to the community. This is our parish/school Mass for the term and all families are invited to attend. The
mass is at 6 o’clock on Saturday night. I hope to see many families supporting our students.
On Tuesday, 2 June, 7pm – 8pm we are holding another Literacy evening which will
demonstrate how technology is used in the teaching of literacy. It will be open to all parents and babysitting will be provided. A flyer went home this week outlining the night.
Pope Francis in an address on the feast of Our lady of Fatima told the gathering that
manners are the fabric of our society. Pope Francis' main talk focussed on the three
phrases he often recommends families use frequently: May I? Thank you. Forgive me.
The words are simple, he said, and hearing the Pope advise their frequent use could
make someone smile at first. "But when we forget them, it's no laughing matter, right?"
The three phrases, he said, "open the path to living well in a family, living in peace." Without them, he said, the family's foundation develops "cracks that can even make it collapse." "Sometimes it seems that we are becoming a civilisation of bad manners and dirty
words as if they were a sign of emancipation. We hear them so often, even publicly," he
said. "Kindness and an ability to say 'thank you' are almost seen as a sign of weakness."
Families must work hard to counter that tendency, he said. When we email quickly or demand things go our way then we often forget our manners. We have had several
instances recently where parents who are working for our community have been spoken to, or emailed, or sent
texts which are lacking in any civility and manners. No helper has malice in their intent and should always be treated with respect, so please next time things aren’t going the way you exactly want think before you send an email,
text or phone and have some manners.
Thank you again Peta Kay and her band of volunteers in organising our annual Walkathon. It was a great success
and now it is time for all families to contribute through their sponsorship form to help reach our target. We are hoping to finalise donations in the coming weeks to award class and individual prizes.

Reminders

School Photos are in Week 7, Tuesday after the long weekend. Children are to wear full winter uniform
which includes maroon jumpers and black school shoes.

On Friday afternoon, After School Care will be using the black top area outside the kitchen garden. They
have a duty of care to the children in their program and so if you are with your child/ren around that area
could you please ensure that they don’t include themselves in After School Care games.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability - Our school is participating in
the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). This Data Collection is taking
place in Catholic, government and Independent schools across Australia, and will provide valuable information about
supports required for a broad group of students. This will enable Australian and State governments to better target support and resources in schools. This in turn will help schools like ours give students the support they need.
The NCCD is not limited to students with diagnosed disabilities. It uses a very broad definition of disability, taken from
the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, which includes a range of
health issues and learning difficulties where schools implement strategies to support students in participating effectively in their learning.
The Data Collection will take place at the end of Term 2. No personal or identifying information about any student will
be included, however, if you decide you do not wish information about your child to be included in the NCCD, you are
asked to contact Judy Spence. If you are still concerned you can contact Judy and request an information page for
parents/carers. If you are still concerned you should complete the opt-out section of the information page and return to
the principal. The opt-out letter will need to be completed, signed and returned to the principal.

WANTED Again! - Telstra Code Club funding. “Our mission is to give every child in Australia the chance to learn to
code. Our challenge for 2015 is a big one. We aim to start 500 new Code Clubs across Australia.
So we’re looking for people to join the Code Club crusade. Help us inspire kids to be more confident and more capable: Start a Code Club or become a volunteer today”.
We can apply for a grant to establish a Code club in our school. We need some parent volunteers to help support this
application. The club would run after school for one hour each week, 3.30-4.30pm, with day to be decided by volunteers.
Code Club is designed to be inclusive of kids who face barriers to thriving in STEM education. STEM is a curriculum
based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.
The program is free and can be set up with just a little guidance from a Code Club volunteer.

PARISH/SCHOOL MASS - THIS SATURDAY, 30 MAY - Parish/School Mass is on this Saturday, 30 May. Please join
us in Mass to celebrate our faith as a whole community and living a full life inspired by this faith.
A reminder too that all candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation are required to be presented to the parish at a
Mass over this coming weekend.

School Wide Focus: Being a communicator and making good
choices in the classroom
At the moment all teachers are busy writing Semester 1 reports. While a lot of work, the teachers value the opportunity to reflect on each student and to identify areas of strength and to suggest ways to improve. How the students
communicate in class discussions and with their peers is a common area of comment. We want all students to feel
confident in sharing their ideas and thoughts, particularly in order to develop their understanding. It is no longer
simply about having the ‘right’ answer; every classroom is a learning environment where comments and questions
are valued. Please encourage your child to speak up and contribute to their own learning.
BYOi

and to pose any comments.
In relation to the school’s capability to successfully implement a 1:1 BYOi program in the coming years, Holy Trinity
is required to work closely with Catholic Education ICT staff, learning technology support specialists and network
specialists. This is officially planned out through the Technology 4 Classrooms (T4C) process. It encompasses the
TPACK framework presented below. Through this process, the school is able to plan for the structure of the program
to ensure the technical capability is more than sufficient, the teaching and learning is pedagogically sound and that
teachers are adequately equipped and trained to implement the initiative. This process has already been gone
through when we set up the existing 1:1 iPad program in Year 5/6. Yet, we are currently revisiting this planning
framework to focus on the new challenges that arise from BYOi. We will continue this process over the coming
months as we move forward with our planning. At this point we are awaiting an upgrade to our wireless network
hardware and the development of a student-friendly login for the school wireless network. I will continue to update
the community as we make progress with our planning.

SAFE CYCLE AND BIKE PROGRAM LAUNCH - Last Friday Emma Tattam from the Physical Activity Foundation
came to the school to officially hand over the 15 brand new mountain and BMX bikes as part of the Safe Cycle
program. The students were excited to see the bikes on the stage and to hear about the planned activities as part
of the program. Teacher training and familiarity with the approved program will happen in the coming weeks, to be
run in Years 5/6 starting next term. Until then, Mr Bugden and I are keen to get the bikes out and being used. Stay
tuned for more details.

Who is in our community at Holy Trinity?
School Board members, parent leaders, in our community
Father Tony Frey
Father Tony has been the Parish Priest of Holy Trinity for 15 years. He was ordained in
September 1973 and celebrated 40 years in 2013. He has overseen all our sacramental
programs and parish/school masses. Fr Tony is a strong supporter of both our schools in
the Parish of the Transfiguration. He works tirelessly for all in our community. His dedication and support of staff and families is always appreciated.
One of Fr Tony’s interests is travel and this year will see him travel extensively in Europe. These times away from the Parish assist him in rejuvenating and continuing his
important work within our Parish.
Aine Barker
My family started at Holy Trinity in 2012 when Jack, Edmund and Catriona started in Years 2,4 and 5. The boys have moved on to high school with strong values
and confidence fostered at Holy Trinity. Attending the high school parent/
teacher interviews teachers frequently ask which school the boys came from as
they comment on their creative thinking and diverse interests which I attribute
to the PYP and Holy Trinity. Catriona (Year 5) is fortunate to spend the most
years at Holy Trinity and loves school and her wonderful teachers.
Coming from an education background it is very rewarding to be part of a
strong governance team and to contribute to important decision making for our
children and the community. My role on the board is to liaise with Fr. Tony and
report on parish activity. We have lovely cups of tea and talk about the sacraments and all parish related activities. I cannot think of a better way to be engaged with our fantastic school.

Walk-a-thon – What a great day! The weather was just right for a walk and picnic. Thank you to all the

school readiness skills. Tea, coffee and biscuits provided.
Parish Mass – This Saturday, 30 May in the Church 6pm. Families are encouraged to come to this
school community activity. There will be a supper provided after the Mass.

Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC WEEK
Sorry Day was remembered at Holy Trinity on Tuesday. On Sorry Day, we come together to remember the
Stolen Generations – the Indigenous Australians who were taken from their families. It is a day when we
express our regret for laws and policies that made our Indigenous brothers and sisters suffer over so many
years. Each class participated in their own special prayer liturgy on the day. Many classes also spent time
reading Aboriginal literature and considering deeply the significance of the day. I know that Year 5/6 have
been deeply touched by Anthony Hill’s picture book, The Burnt Stick.
Sorry Day marks the beginning of Reconciliation Week, which runs from May 27 to June 3. The theme for this
year’s Reconciliation Week is: it’s time to change it up! The dates commemorate two significant milestones
in the reconciliation journey—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court
Mabo decision. The week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and
achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort.
Richie Allan, our Aboriginal Education Assistant will be here on Monday. He will discuss and demonstrate
with each year level the symbols used in Aboriginal Art as well as the colours and techniques that are used.
Many students in Year 3 – 6 are already participating in composition and artistic activities leading up to
NAIDOC week, which will be celebrated in Week 10. It will begin with a prayer assembly led by our Year 5
students. To help our school celebrate, Adrian Fabila Tjupurrula— aka Tjupurru—will be performing for us on
Thursday, July 2. Inspired by the music of Gondwanaland, Tjupurru is a very skilled and gifted musician and
has toured extensively throughout Australia for performances and school workshops. He has also toured all
over the globe including performing at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals. We can’t wait to
meet him!
