Athletics Carnival
Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
We have had a very positive and busy start to the term; our 100th Anzac ceremony led by our
Year 5/6 students highlighted the significance of this special commemoration, our Year 5/6
went off to camp and our school X country. The calendar looks very full with many whole
school events and activities during the term. Please make sure that you upload the Skoolbag
app to your phone, read all notes that are sent home (GET IT BACK GREEN – all GREEN
notes need to be signed and returned), read the newsletter and check the school website. We
have information in many areas to ensure that all information is accessible.
On Monday ‘Enrolment’ period opens. If you have a child eligible for school or preschool in
2016: ELC, turning 4 before 30 April 2016 or School, turning 5 before 30 April 2016, please
collect an enrolment pack from the ELC or school in the coming 3 weeks. Enrolment time
ends 22 May. As is the usual practice I ask all families to help promote and support our school.
Sustained enrolments are vital to the growth of our school, open access to resources and
ensures that we have a viable future. Each family will be sent 4 postcards on Monday to
distribute to family and friends. We appreciate the support of all families at this time, talking
about and supporting our school.
This year Catholic Education, in conjunction with our regional schools is promoting the benefits
of co-education for primary children in their local area. “Boys and Girls, Preschool to Year 6,
growing and learning together”. As I have already discussed boys are an essential part of
our dream and vision for Holy Trinity and we plan that they will complete their primary school
years with us. We have no history or records of boys or girls missing out on getting into the
high school of their choice. Our Year 6 students have gone, or are going to, eight different
High Schools. The choice is wonderful. Not all boys leave in Year 4 and we, parents, teachers
and CE, are working proactively to encourage more boys to stay at their local primary school to
grow, learn, take on leadership and extra responsibilities in preparation for High School.
Our campers Year 5/6, Petra, Jane and Cameron left bright and early on Tuesday morning.
This year they are making a change and going to Jindabyne Sport and Recreation camp. They
arrived safely and are enjoying glorious weather. Yesterday, Simon and I joined them. Camp
provides many learning experiences and challenges for all.
Next Wednesday night, 6 May, 7pm we are holding a meeting to outline our IT plans for the future. Technology is
developing rapidly and early adoption and implementation is vital to prepare our children for the future. The Australian
Curriculum now includes: a general capability for ICT; which weaves through all curriculum areas and Digital Technologies as a subject area. All parents are invited as this will impact all students into the future.
Finally, our P&F and dads have a special surprise for mums; movie night on Friday, 8 May at 6pm. It is an event for
dads/grandparents and children to give mum a special early gift; time to relax.

Reminders
YMCA BEFORE SCHOOL CARE - available at Holy Trinity Primary School from 7.30 am. All services are
Child Care Benefit (CCB) Approved. Enrolments are accepted on a permanent and casual basis for Before School
Care. All Before School Care services operate Monday to Friday during school terms from their designated opening time until school starts. A light breakfast is provided for all children attending and this is included in the fees.

The Tuckshop needs you! A flyer was sent home last term outlining the benefits of working in the tuckshop. We
need more volunteers to keep it operating. Please consider donating 3 hours of your time once a term to help. Contact Tanya Elliott or Kirsty Brogan.
WINTER UNIFORM - There will be two weeks changeover time for all students to be in winter uniform. Please ensure that children wear the correct jumper; maroon for regular uniform and green with sports uniform. Black school
shoes are the regular uniform.
FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT FRIDAY, 8 MAY - A movie night will be held at Holy Trinity on Friday, 8 May at 6pm. For
further information see attached flyer or collect one from the Front Office.
MOTHER’S DAY - Thank you to those of you who have already brought in your gifts for the stall. Just a reminder,
volunteers are still needed to assist on the day. If you can spare half an hour or so that would be appreciated.

PRAYERS: Please pray for Father Tony and his family, his brother died on Saturday. The funeral is in Goulburn on Friday.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION - At the end of last term the registration form for the Sacrament of Confirmation were sent home. These are now due to the parish office.
The following dates are important to remember in regards to the Sacrament of Confirmation:
Parent Information Evening- Thursday, 14 May. 6.45pm for Leaders, 7 pm for all other parents. All parents are
expected to attend this information evening in the Parish Centre.
Presentation Masses- Weekend of 30 and 31 May- Confirmation candidates are asked to attend a mass
across this weekend.
Student Retreat Day- Wednesday, 24 June. – All Year 6 Holy Trinity students will be involved in this day.
Sacrament of Confirmation- Sunday, 28 June- Mass times 9am and 11am.
MOTHER’S DAY PRAYER ASSEMBLY AND MORNING TEA - All are invited to a prayer assembly to celebrate
Mother’s Day on Friday, 8 May at 9.30am. All Year 1 families are asked to provide a plate for all to share at the
morning tea.
PARISH/SCHOOL MASS - SAVE THE DATE: SATURDAY, 30 MAY
Parish/School Mass this term is on Saturday, 30 May. The candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation will be
presented to the parish at this mass. Please join us in celebrating our faith together, a time to reflect on our term
theme of ‘Living a full life inspired by faith’.

A School Wide Positive Behaviour Program
School Wide Focus: Being an inquirer and making contributions in class.
On Tuesday and Wednesday I had the pleasure of spending time with Yr 5/6 at camp. It is always enjoyable to
see the students away from the school environment and to see the wonderful friendships they have and to the
joy at spending time with each other. Most pleasing was the immediate feedback from the instructors regarding
the ‘quality’ of our students. We look forward to hearing all about their exploits on their return.

Students in Year 3 and 5 will complete the NAPLAN tests on Tuesday – Thursday Week 3. Practice samples can

CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL - Well done to all the students on their efforts Monday and Wednesday this
week. I have been told that there were some great races in the younger years. Congratulations to those students
who will be running at the South Weston Carnival next Tuesday. Thank you to Ms Jeffery and Mr Mac for organising the two events this week.
SOUTH WESTON CROSS COUNTRY - Those students who are competing at the carnival next Tuesday,
please return your permission forms this Friday.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered for the carnival on Friday 15 May.

Who is in our community at Holy Trinity?
This week we introduce the ELC Staff
Iva Plessnitzer
This will be my 5th year as Director of the ELC and it always amazes me to have younger siblings come through the ELC who I first saw as babies. I love working in the ELC and having
conversations with the pre-schoolers each day, they have the best perspective on everything. At home I have a husband and 4 daughters. The girls keep me busy and I enjoy chatting with them over cappuccinos and lattes on the weekends.
Liz Bulley
My husband Mark, and two children Brydie and Sean, were all students of Holy
Trinity. I started working at Holy Trinity Primary as a Learning Support Assistant
when Sean started kindy in 2008. I really enjoyed seeing the progress that kids
made when given some support and an opportunity to shine! I was offered the
position of part-time Office Manager during the construction of the ELC in 2010 - I
have a background in Accountancy and Project Management. There are many
things that I love about my job including the variety, the challenges, the fabulous
staff and that my day is punctuated by the antics and wisdom of our preschoolers. I can be neck deep in a bank reconciliation, when suddenly I’m questioned about the origins of a very squishy grub – there’s never a dull moment!
Jess Pincott
I began working at Holy Trinity ELC as a graduate teacher in 2012. I very much enjoy learning alongside the children and have a love and passion for all things messy, enjoying sensory and nature based play experiences and am happy to join my class in a frolic through a
mud puddle or roll down a hill. I recently bought a house and moved to Canberra after having travelled from Goulburn each day for work (yes, I really do love my job!) In my spare
time I enjoy visiting my parents and my two boisterous Labradors and often spend my time
making various pastes, relishes and chutneys using fresh fruit from their property. My other
hobbies include buying dresses and perusing Pinterest for new messy ideas!
Kellie Lambert
I am the terrifically awesome Teacher Assistant in the Ground Parrots Room. I have been in
the ELC for the past 3 years and have been enjoying getting to know all our wonderful families in the Holy Trinity community! I have a love of sport and being outdoors. This year I am
trying my luck at rugby although I have grown up playing soccer! I love enjoying all the
wonder our world has around us with the pre-schoolers!

Tess Muscat
I am new to Holy Trinity this year and am enjoying my journey so far. I have been teaching in Early Childhood centres for ten years, firstly as an assistant, then into the role of a
teacher and I also worked as a director before starting at Holy Trinity. I am the teacher in
the Rock wallabies class in the ELC, each day in the ELC is very exciting as I never know
where the children’s inquiry might go.
I moved from Sydney in January after marrying my husband who had relocated to Canberra two years ago. Apart from missing my family I am enjoying my new life in Canberra. In my spare time I like to keep fit and healthy by going to the gym or for long walks. I
especially love seeing my family and spending time with my five nieces and nephews. I
also completed a Diploma in Events Management before studying teaching which has
given me a passion for organising events for my family and friends.
Antonia Matthew
My name is Antonia Matthew. I am a teaching professional who has worked in a number of
Canberra Schools over the past 32 years. I am married with three grown up children and
my interests include, sport, music, gardening and cooking. I have a Diploma in Teaching
(Physical Education and Health) and worked for 27 years, in the Junior School, at Canberra
Girls’ Grammar School. I retired from my teaching position in 2011 and after a period of
time at home decided to return to work. I was lucky enough to be offered a position as
Teacher’s Assistant at Holy Trinity ELC. Since working at Holy Trinity I have undertaken
more study and completed a Certificate 3 and Diploma in Children’s Services.
I have a passion for working with children and as an Early Childhood educator I have a
responsibility to provide children with a positive safe and secure learning environment,
where children feel supported and where partnerships and active participation are central
to learning.
Claire Northfield
I have been part of the Holy Trinity community since June 2012. I am currently the After
School Care Coordinator in the ELC and I also work in the preschool during the afternoons. My favourite thing about working with children is that each day is completely
different and I never know what is going to be thrown my way. I am also a fulltime student, studying a Bachelor of Education degree through distance education. I enjoy
spending time outside with friends and family, going for walks and bike rides around the
lake. I also love travelling and hope to make use of my Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification in the future.

GISELLE ROBERTS (B.Ed, AMUSA, LMUSA) Certified Simply Music Teacher - Giselle teaches piano at
Holy Trinity and would like to advise that she has vacant positions for any students interested in learning piano.
Giselle has been teaching piano for over 25 years. She is a former student of Joan Chia and Susan Powell from
the Canberra School of Music, has her AMUSA, LMUSA as well as a Bachelor of Education in Music. She is currently studying for her FMUSA with Marcela Fiorillo and her interests lie very much in advanced piano technique
as well as composition and improvisation. Giselle teaches both the traditional and the Simply Music methods.

Don’t forget the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge – we want each child in the school to read and record
12 books over a 12 week period. If you need a new form we have a stash in the library.
Redgum Book Club was given out today! Have a look at the catalogue it’s full of wonderful books. All ordering and payments are done on-line not through the school.
Thanks to John Nikias in Year 1 for donating the book “Lennie the Legend“ to our library. John and his
mother loved this book so much that they decided to buy a copy for our library.
The library is now open Monday – Wednesday mornings from 8.30am. Bring your child in and swap your
books or read a book and have a look around. Mrs Schofield and myself would love to see you.
The Skerbic family were the first family to visit our library on Tuesday morning.

What will this year’s anthem be????
MOTHERS’ DAY STALL
Friday, 8 May
The Mothers’ Day stall will be held next Friday, 8 May. For those not familiar with the
stall the idea is that each child brings to school a small item (worth around $4 to $8)
wrapped in clear plastic or cellophane. These gifts can be picked up from the supermarket
as part of regular shopping. It is the spirit that is important and not the actual gift.
Children are then able to purchase a present, other than the one they have brought in, for
a nominal cost of $1 or $2.
Please send in your gifts Week 1 next term!!
We recommend a gi worth about $4 - $8. Some ideas... chocolates, mugs,
books, toiletries, key rings, magazines, gardening stuﬀ, DVD’s... The list goes on!
It doesn’t have to be expensive, just though*ul.
Please wrap your gift in cellophane or
clear plastic
