SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
10th May, 2015
Reflection:
On this beautiful day dedicated to motherhood, we
contemplate the reality that God is love. It is most appropriate
that the gospel talks to us about Jesus’ command to ‘LOVE ONE
ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU’. We see this lived out by many
mothers in our community who provide apostolic activity, emotional
support, friendships and spiritual guidance.
Mothers epitomize God’s love in everything they do for their
families, friends, community and those in need. Mothers come to see that loving defines who they
are and that they are truly themselves when they choose to love God and others. Mothers
acknowledge that true love is hard and demanding. It requires virtue and brings out the best in all
involved in the love relationship.
So we ask God to bless all mothers, so that their love may be deep and tender, and that they may
lead their children to know and do what is good, living not for themselves alone, but for God and
for others.

Appeal for People in Nepal
This weekend there will be a 2nd collection
in all three communities for Caritas Nepal Appeal.
This earthquake has devastated a wonderful gentle people. The Nepalese
communities have always been an attractive place of beauty and hospitality to
all its visitors, spectators and climbers. Our hearts and prayers go out to them
and in a small way I ask you to respond to this special collection this week.
Loving God, we thank you for our mothers:
who cared for us when we were helpless,
who comforted us when we were hurt,
whose love and care is unconditional .
We pray for: those who are grieving
the loss of their mother,
those who never knew their biological mother,
and now yearn for her,
those who have experienced the wonder of an adopted mother's love.
Lord, give them special blessings.
Keep us united with you and with our mothers,
Amen.
so that we can be and become all that we are meant to be.
We support the endeavours of the Royal Commission to bring healing to the victims of abuse.

‘As the Father has love me, so I
have loved you’
The boundlessness of God’s love is seen in
the fact that God loved us even before we
were deserving of God’s love. In fact, it was
God’s love that made us able both to
receive and to give love in return. Love is of
God; love is God. Divine love is constant
and trustworthy. How easily we can think this thought or speak these
words, yet how difficult, even impossible, it is to comprehend what it
means. We can only really recognise love in its many concrete
manifestations. Love is patient, kind and forbearing; it believes, it
hopes, it endures. The love of God breaks down the barriers between
Gentile and Jew, between slave and free, between the poor and the
prosperous, between women and men, between the healthy and the
ailing, between young and old.
Embraced by such love we are gradually transformed. We begin to
recognise God’s love in places we never suspected it would be found.
We discover that what we once judged unclean may merely be an
unfamiliar openness to God’s truth. We discover that our own
insistence on legitimate religious practice may really be spiritual
elitism. Our eyes are opened to ways we have tried to confine God’s
love to the conventional boundaries we ourselves have set. As we are
drawn into God’s love, we eagerly embrace the commandments that
help us to live righteous lives. To the extent that we love as universally
as God does, we will know that we live in God and that God lives in us.

While we celebrate Mother’s Day…
spare a thought for mother in Australian-funded Immigration Detention Centres.
As at the end of March 2015, there were 124 children and their parents in mainland
detention centres. More concerning, there were 103 children and 126 women on Nauru.
Recent reports have again confirmed the terrible psychological and physical effects of longterm detention on asylum seekers, especially children. These reports have also uncovered
incidents of sexual and physical abuse of women and children in detention on Nauru.
Last December, the Government promised to get all children out of detention on Christmas
Island. They sent them to detention in Darwin for months before releasing them into the
community on bridging visas. However, this commitment did not extend to babies born in
Australia since 5 December 2014. These babies and their mothers are scheduled to be sent to
Nauru.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
GOSPEL:
John 15: 9-17
Jesus said to his disciples:
‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you.
Remain in my love.
If you keep my commandments you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love.
I have told you this so that my own joy may be in you and your joy be complete.
This is my commandment:
love one another, as I have loved you.
A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends.
You are my friends, if you do what I command you, I shall not call you servants any
more,
because a servant does not know his master’s business;
I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my
Father.
You did not choose me, no, I chose you; and I commissioned you to go out and to bear fruit,
fruit that will last; and then the Father will give you anything you ask him in my name.
What I command you is to love one another.’
Did you know?………
