Importance of Looking Good in the Service Industry
The service provider has a responsibility to look good, not only to oneself but also to the customers.
Therefore by looking good, they are not only saying that they respect themselves but they are also
communicating that they respect and care for their customers
As airline staff, you will be playing the role of a service provider. By looking good, Air Costa benefits
because you help to create a positive image of the airline. Most importantly, you as an individual also
benefit; when passengers appreciate you as a professional, you feel good about yourself and
therefore gain more confidence when interacting with your passengers.
Image of Air Costa
People normally identify an airline by two things: the colors of the aircraft (the livery) and the uniform
their staff wear as they are the most recognizable members of an airline’s staff. Therefore, your
presentation in uniform is crucial in creating a good impression to the public we serve.
We expect you to project the Corporate Image of Professional, Immaculate and Consistent and to take
pride when you wear the Air Costa uniform. It is important that you are able to maintain the highest
standards of conduct and appearance when identifiable as an Air Costa employee.
The Grooming Module

Costa’s grooming standards for your Induction Training. It will also give you an overview of the

The Total Image
You know by now that as a ground staff you are the most visible part of the airline and the one who
spends the most time with the passengers. Air Costa sets high standards of conduct and deportment
for you, as you carry the corporate image in many other ways and people will identify the airline
through you and often expect you to be well mannered, polite and gracious.
Apart from looking good, you must also behave appropriately. When someone looks at you, it is not
your personality that they see right away, instead they observe the way you smile, speak, behave and
act. Good manners simply involve treating those around you thoughtfully and respectfully. It is
important that the expectations of the public are met to help us achieve the Air Costa Commitment
and total quality service.
The people to whom you will be visible are not limited to your passengers. You will also be very visible
to other airline passengers and visitors, people on the street. Being sensitive and respectful of the
culture and people of the various countries you will be meeting is just as important.
23 | P a g e
Conduct in uniform
When you are in uniform it becomes very important that you project yourself well. People notice and
watch you. Your conduct and behavior projects an image of not only yourself but also of all staff and
the company. Just as you and your colleagues would like that image to be positive, Air Costa expects
that image to be a good one too. Remember once you leave your home in uniform everything you do
will be noticed; it is important to be aware of your actions.
Conduct out of uniform
You probably have heard that working as an airline staff is not only a job but also a lifestyle. People
can easily identify you as Air Costa staff. It is important that when you are identifiable as Air Costa
staff, even when you are in civilian clothes that you still project a positive image. There are specific
situations when you are easily identifiable as Air Costa staff even when you are not in uniform:
Visiting Air Costa premises
While travelling as a passenger on Air Costa flight
In these situations, the company expects you to conduct yourself appropriately. It is expected that
you will be polite, well-mannered and appropriately groomed.
Being well dressed and well-mannered also commands respect from other people. When visiting LB
premises it is important that you are properly groomed. Check the Dress Code and Uniform policy find
out the guidelines.
When you travel as a passenger on Air Costa flights using rebated staff tickets you are expected to
dress and behave properly. On the flight, you will probably encounter many of your friends and
colleagues also as passengers or operating as crew members. Do not spend too much time talking to
your friends who are working; other passengers will notice. Of course, as airline staff you would know
the inflight procedures quite well. Do not make it so obvious that you know what is going on, like
going into the galley and helping yourself to the items in the compartments. As a general guideline
when travelling as a passenger, one must be discreet and maintain a low profile. You should be
sensitive and considerate and be aware that you are surrounded by full fare passengers.
24 | P a g e
Deportment
Deportment is defined as the way you move, that is, the way you walk, sit and stand, your general
bearing and posture. As an airline staff, it is expected that you have a good posture and look elegant.
No matter how well groomed you are, if you slouch all the time, your effort in choosing the right
clothes and make-up is wasted. Benefits of having good posture include:
Makes uniform look and fit better on you
Healthier as you breathe better
Makes you look younger
Looks taller and feels more confident
Reduces fatigue and tension
A good way to improve your deportment is to be aware of how you move and how you can improve.
Ask your friends to give you feedback and do make a conscious effort to improve. To help you get
started, read the guidelines below:
Posture when standing
Correct posture makes you look taller and feel more confident and less tired at the end of the day. To
find the correct posture, stand against a wall and make sure that your head, shoulders, and your
buttocks are against the wall. Hold your shoulders up and back, tucking your stomach in while keeping
your back straight. Walk away and maintain that posture.
Walking
For the ladies, when walking take note of which part of your foot lands first. The balls of your feet
should land first, not the heels or the toes. An attractive way to walk is to put the foot slightly in front
of the other, that is, imagine walking on a straight line.
Sitting
For the ladies, sitting properly is very important. Keep your knees and your ankles together. When
crossing your legs, keep your ankles together for a more elegant look. Also, keep your upper body
upright.
Bending
Always bend your knees and not your back. Your job will require you to do a lot of bending and
carrying, so it is very important that you do not use your back, but rather your knees and legs. This is
not only true for back care but also for deportment.
25 | P a g e
See the diagram
Bend your knees and not your back!
Other Guidelines
Do not fold your arms in front as it gives a negative, closed message.
Twiddling of thumbs, twirling of hair, picking or scratching of ear and nose does not look good.
Pointing with a finger is very rude. Instead use an open palm and point with all fingers of the hand.
Using your lips to point, by pouting towards something or someone is not appropriate.
Try not to run. You can still look good when walking quickly.
When serving or talking to a passenger make sure that you are facing them. It is impolite to talk over
your shoulder.
Body and Health Care
To look even better, you also need to feel physically and mentally good. Your most important
preparation is to stay healthy in body and mind. Good health will provide you with the strength to
meet the challenges ahead.
Maintaining height-weight ratio: Body Mass Index
An important part of looking good is maintaining height-weight ratio. Healthy eating habits and
exercise help you maintain your weight. To give you an idea of the basic guidelines of the acceptable
height-weight ratio, look at the chart below for your ideal weight.

Attitude
Attitude cannot be shaped by rules and regulations, but by a healthy balance between body, mind and soul.
Every day may not be good, but there's something good in every day.
There is an awakening in the corporate world of the importance of a positive mental attitude.
Most times for employees stress levels increase, feeling or urge to report sick, under-performance,
low productivity
– all this occurs due to a negative mental attitude/mindset.
Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. Employees has to adjust compromise and try to
make the best out of the available limited resources.
Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of
effort put is the same.
If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it. If we
are not happy about the functioning of a specific task then he/she should interact/discuss with his/her
seniors or colleagues and bring about a positive change.
There is nothing that is easy but it becomes difficult when you do it reluctantly.
We often find it difficult to adjust to the different working styles of the Managers / officers and vice
versa. In such situation, the staff and the Manager must discuss the procedures in order to avoid
conflicts .The Senior should ensure that his/her staff is comfortable working with him.
If you don’t like a specific person then you must try to know him/her better in order to make a
pleasant work environment.
Could we change our attitude, we should not only see life differently, but life itself would come to be
different. As someone said – Attitude shapes our Altitude!
We cannot direct the wind but we can adjust the sails.
