BOLTON is a large town, perfectly situated for access to the beautiful countryside
of the West Pennine Moors, yet just 10 miles from the city of Manchester.
Part of the county of Greater Manchester, the borough
is made up of smaller towns, including Farnworth,
Horwich and Westhoughton.
Trafford centre shopping mall 20 minutes’ drive and
major towns like Bury, Preston, Blackburn, Warrington
and Blackpool are all within easy reach.
The town was at the heart of the industial revolution
at the end of the 18th century – and home to Samuel
Crompton, inventor of the Spinning Mule. It because
a vital mill town at the forefront of the world-leading
cotton industry.
Bolton is also a hotbed of famous names. Comedians
Peter Kay, Dave Spikey and Paddy McGuinness still
live in the borough and world famous actor Sir Ian
McKellen studied at Bolton School, one of the top
independent schools in the region. Radio 1 DJ Sara
Cox and TV presenter Vernon Kay also hail from the
town, along with Danny Jones, the lead singer of
pop group McFly and two members of the band The
Wanted.
Bolton has a Championship League football team,
Bolton Wanderers, based at the Macron Stadium at
Horwich, fantastic shopping at the Market Place in the
town centre and at Middlebook Retail Park in Horwich
and prime entertainment venues in the nationally
famous Octagon Theatre and the Albert Halls.
Thanks to excellent motorway links – the M61 , M60,
M62 and M65 – a host of towns are within minutes’
drive. Manchester Airport is just 30 minutes away, the
Sports stars include the late England footballer Alan
Ball, Wanderers and England soccer legend Nat
Lofthouse and young boxing sensation Amir Khan.
