In late 2010 Alpine signed with Winterman & Goldstein Management (Empire Of The Sun, Lanie Lane, The Vines, Jet, The Sleepy Jackson). 2011 saw the release of their debut EP Zurich which featured the singles Villages (no. 2 most played on JJJ radio) and Heartlove (top 10 of most played on JJJ) and had fans and critics alike clamoring for more. ALPINE are back with their new single HANDS which is already on high rotation at Triple J, the first cut from their forthcoming debut album due out in early 2012. 2012 is set to be a BIG YEAR. There was much anticipation for his US debut LP, The Socialite. In 2010, Clockwise joined Strokes front man Julian Casablancas on his first solo tour. In support of The Socialite, Clockwise toured the east and west coasts, selling out famed music haunts such as The El Rey, Troubadour, NYC’s Piano’s, Brooklyn’s Union Hall; performed for his third consecutive year at SXSW; opened for INXS at The Pearl in Las Vegas; and played to 5000 people at the Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Concert Series with Missy Higgins. Andy’s brand new album War Stories was recorded in Australia over the summer. He’ll release the record with shows in LA in February, followed by a stint at Playground Weekender in Australia. Joanna chills at the kit, occasionally chiming in with some backing vocals, whilst lead singer Tom swaps between electric guitar and keys, in turn moulding the on-stage genres from grunge to pop to moody ballads. It’s this eclecticism that has allowed Big Scary to support bands from Midlake to Florence & The Machine and they’d be just as comfortable with Led Zepellin too. Releasing a compilation of four seasonallythemed EPs titled The Big Scary Four Seasons in late 2010 (with tracks Thinking About You featuring on Grey’s Anatomy and Autumn used for an AT&T advertising campaign), Big Scary have recently released their debut album Vacation in Aus/NZ. It was nominated for Triple J Australian Album of the Year and was voted the eighth Best Album of 2011 by Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill (one of only two Australian bands and certainly the only unsigned band to get on the list). 2012 is set to see them release their genre defying debut album Vacation worldwide. Formed by Steve, Ruth and Nicole in 2010, the band split their time between London and their hometown of Brisbane, Australia. The EP has received early kudos from Australian, Japanese, South African and British Radio. Hailing from the tight-knit disco and house music scene in Melbourne, Australia and taking elements from an acoustic past, Chet Faker has carved out a unique style that fuses personal stories of love and loss with an electronica soul that reaches far beyond his homeland. Chet quickly came to everyone’s attention when his cover of ‘No Diggity’ hit #1 on the worldwide indie music aggregator, Hype Machine. But far from rushing into the limelight, Chet built on the popularity of ‘No Diggity’ through a series of tracks released online, creating an insatiable hunger from fans for more from this part jazz, part soul and part electronic artist. Now Chet Faker is poised on the next phase of his development. He is supporting Toro y Moi and Washed Out in 2012, has already sold out shows in Melbourne and Sydney and is releasing his EP, Thinking in Textures in March. Their songs can be sparse, driving, heavy and wild, with an emotional energy that hangs ponderously and precariously in the balance between calm and terror. Imagine The Jesus Lizard with Crazy Horse playing soundtracks for the darker works for Cormac McCarthy through bleeding amps—a grunged-out blend of gothic folk and blues. They’re also not afraid to experiment and produce some of their most compelling work when they do. Whether it’s a well-placed splash of acid-fried guitar noise on one of their sonic canvases, or giving the avant-rock treatment to extended improvisational sound collages reminiscent of CAN or Sunburned Hand of the Man, Electric Jellyfish shift with ease between being rockers who know how to experiment and experimenters who know how to rock. Electric Jellyfish has toured both Australia and the US extensively since 2007 and the SXSW shows will be part of a tour featuring supports for Feedtime, Spectre Folk, Hank IV, Carlton Melton and more. Their electric live performances have earned them a dedicated following with sold out shows across Australia as well as appearances at Peats Ridge, Progfest and Menagerie. The band’s debut studio album …and so we destroyed everything was released through Bird’s Robe Records in 2011. The album’s lush production and heaving musicianship has resonated with listeners worldwide. It topped sales charts on Bandcamp, received album of the week honours on KOOP radio (Texas), nowlikephotographs and end of year nods from Sputnik Music, Drum Media, TheMusic.com.au and Metal Obsession. Now Sleepmakeswaves are in the midst of an extensive Australian tour. They’ll play their first international shows in the USA and Europe in 2012, including SXSW in Austin, Texas and co-headlining Dunk! Festival in Belgium alongside This Will Destroy You and 65daysofstatic. After several years spent performing in rock bands, making a racket and trailing her lipstick-smeared microphone cord across barroom tables, Jess got her hands on a couple of unloved drum machines and decided her true path lay in more subtle musical territory. Now armed with a 505 drum machine, keyboards and electric guitar, Jess weaves her haunting vocal melodies through pared-back rhythms, hypnotic guitar lines and layered vocal samples. Influenced by the metronomic drumming of The Scientists and the chameleon-pop powers of David Bowie, Teeth & Tongue is now forging her own dark route though a kaleidoscope of mixed genres. In June 2011 she released second album Tambourine via Remote Control to a stellar reception from Australian media. The Age gave it four stars, The Vine called it, “One of the best Australian releases this year,” and single Unfamiliar Skirts picked up an EG Song Of The Year Awards nomination. Teeth & Tongue has toured Europe, performed in Spain with Lydia Lunch and Dawn Landes, played the Falls and Laneway festivals and supported J Mascis of Dinosaur Jnr, EMA, The Mountain Goats, The Dodos, Juana Molina and Sons And Daughters. Their edgy, fast-paced, live shows caught the attention of Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) who produced their first album and invited them to tour Australia with Sonic Youth. Riding on an early wave of success, The Follow moved to America and released a self-titled EP, produced by Nick Launay of Nick Cave, Silverchair, INXS and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. They played SXSW plus 40 dates coast to coast across the US. Later that year after a second whirlwind US tour they recorded their first album in Texas with producer Frenchie Smith (Jet, Trail of Dead, The Dandy Warhols). The Art returned to Australia in 2009 to support Marilyn Manson, Them Crooked Vultures and perform at Big Day Out. They scored the Australian and NZ support slot for The Pixies, on the Dolittle 20 year Anniversary Tour. They also toured with 30 Seconds to Mars, The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and completed their first headline tour in Australia. The Art wasted no time signing a deal with Silverback Records and Insomnia Management to put the wheels in motion for the release of their latest album Here Comes The War, released in February 2011. The duo recently teamed up with Iconic Australian Jewelry designers MANIAMANIA for three musical visual collaborations. Their three films featuring international supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw were launched on the New York Times website. “Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride is sprawling, slow-burning psyche rock that paints creeping moods with layer upon layer of drony, blissed-out guitars and etheral vocals.... They were voted as unsigned band of the year on the Triple J radio Unearthed J Awards in 2008. Their debut album Tangalooma was produced by Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens and mixed by Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Fiery Furnaces). The album garnered huge support and was Triple J’s feature album. The single Overpass, came in at #52 in the Hottest 100 for 2010. The band has trekked the country with sell-out headline shows and supported some incredible bands on tour such as The Polyphonic Spree, The Morning Benders and The Dodos. Or rather, two boys meet girl to make kick-ass rock music. Guitarist Whakaio Taahi and his bass player, Cameron Adler, needed a frontman for a rock project or rather, frontwoman. As soon as 16 year old Jenna McDougall’s soaring contralto and sweet strains took the mic, something clicked. One jam later with Jake Hardy (rhythm axeman) and Matt Best (drummer), Tonight Alive were up and running, pedal to the metal. A year on, courted by labels and management secured, with two stellar EPs (All Shapes & Disguises and Consider This) under their belts, a demo of Tonight Alive’s new material landed on producer-extraordinaire Mark Trombino’s (Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, The Starting Line) desk. He rang the band immediately, wanting in. Recorded at LA’s infamous NRG Studios over two months, Trombino’s personal interest in the project played out in other fortuitous ways. What you’re listening to now is the inspired result of that auspicious partnership between a bunch of Aussie kids and an auteur with a canon of classic records already to his name. What Are You So Scared Of? is one more album to add to that list. 30 Twerps Pop Cheeky, charming and touchingly direct, Melbourne foursome Twerps are rising from humble beginnings to become international lo-fi pop champions. Their debut EP, released on Australia’s Chapter Music in late 2009, featured nine short, simple but incredibly infectious tracks recorded by Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring/Total Control). These tracks were also released by Iowa label Night People (Wet Hair, Peaking Lights). On the basis of this EP, Twerps were called, “the best new band in Australia” by UK magazine Uncut. More US labels came calling and Twerps released singles in early 2011 on Underwater Peoples (Mountain Man, Real Estate) and Group Tightener (Best Coast, Cloud Nothings). They also took off on their first US tour, a six week cross-country odyssey that saw them shine at SXSW, head through the midwest with Wet Hair and pack out a New York show with Big Troubles. Their self-titled debut album followed in late 2011, a Chapter Music/Underwater Peoples co-release. Pitchfork gave it a 7.9 review and awarded their album’s single Coast To Coast a Best New Track (only the third Aussie band ever to score a BNT, after Cut Copy and Tame Impala). The album was also streamed in full by Gorilla Vs Bear and Stereogum and picked up by hundreds of blogs around the world. Now the band is headed back to the US for SXSW, followed by a five week tour in April/May. Following the Parklife Festival the duo was swept into the festival circuit and received offers to support many high profile acts including Ladytron, Maximo Park, Midnight Juggernauts and Art vs Science and many more. The band’s latest single Animalia, released in late 2011, gained high rotation on Australian radio stations before being released in the US in November 2011 where it debuted at #36 on the USA college radio charts. The accompanying music video took out Gold at the Australian Cinematography Awards and was voted the 7th most popular video of the year by viewers of ABCTV’s Rage. The band has toured Australia extensively and in 2010 travelled to New York City for the CMJ Music Marathon. The band has received remixes from European disco producers Lifelike (France), Moullinex (Portugal/Germany) and JBAG (France/ UK) and their track D.I.L. was featured on French tastemaker label Kitsune’s 2010 Kitsune x Ponystep compilation. The band has enjoyed widespread international blog attention from the likes of Lost at E Minor, The Coolhunter and Nylon Magazine. The result is an album that encapsulates the best of classic song writing and modern ideas, executed in a phenomenal fashion. The record itself doesn’t ooze of a buzz band way ahead of itself but rather a gradually growing group of musicians doing what they do best. From the stomping album opener ‘Collossus’ to the poignant first single - ‘See You Hurry’, the band exudes confidence, style and prestige. The album takes many turns, as a journey is formed with tracks like ‘America’ and the ethnic tinged ‘John’.
