Doodle 4 Google Art and Design lesson plans (Years 7 - 8) Lesson length: 2 x 1 hour (approx.) Note: This lesson plan is a guide only. Teachers planning to submit student work for the Doodle 4 Google competition can adjust these plans as they wish. Aim • To develop students’ ability to represent ideas through drawing • To develop a design brief in response to the given theme. Lesson outcomes • All students will be able to create a complete design based on the theme of ‘My Australia’. • Most students will be able to make considered choices in their handling of materials, style and form. • Some students will be able to produce work that is visually balanced and unified, and expresses an original and personal vision of the theme. Materials and equipment recommended • Paper • Pencils, coloured pencils, pens, acrylic or water-based paints • Images of cities, people and landscapes from other parts of the world. • Images of ‘Australian things’, e.g. the Opera House, kangaroos and koalas, the beach etc. • Images of example logos and Google Doodles. • Outlines of Google lettering. Two copies for each student will be required (draft and final copy). Lesson 1 Introduction • Introduce the topic and show students Google logo examples. • Discuss collected examples of pictures of cities, people and landscapes from other parts of the world (students might be asked in advance of the lesson to make a collection of such pictures cut from magazines or travel brochures to bring to the lesson with them). • Discuss what clues there are in the pictures as to where in the world it is located. • What do our national symbols say about us? How do they compare with the images/landmarks from other countries? • Involve the whole class in a discussion about what makes life in Australia different from anywhere else in the world and how they might use their ideas as part of the logo. What makes Australia recognisable? Discuss the responses with the class. • Show the class the examples of past Google Doodles. Activity - draft doodle • Give students the outline Google letters and ask them how they might use their ideas about Australia as part of the logo. • Explain that this is their first draft and that they will have the opportunity to complete a good copy for submission. Conclusion - sharing their work • Bring the class back together. Encourage students to comment on their own and each other’s ideas, methods and approaches. • Students should explain how they might adapt and improve their work and describe how they might develop it further. Time (mins) 20 30 10 Suggested extension activity • Able students may wish to develop their ideas for the logo into a larger painting or other piece of work. • Teachers may offer the opportunity for students to use different materials or forms of communication (i.e. mixed media, collage etc) to further explore the theme of ‘My Australia’. Lesson 2 Introduction • Remind students of what they achieved in the previous lesson. • Ask students to remember some of the ideas they discussed about Australia. • Remind students that their final doodles will be completed today and that the best submissions will be entered into a competition. Activity 1 - final draft of doodles • Give students the outline Google letters and ask them to complete their final copy showing their view of Australia. Activity 2- supporting statement • Ask students to give their design a title (maximum of 5 words). • Ask students to write a short supporting statement (maximum of 100 words) describing their doodle and how it represents ideas about Australia. Conclusion- sharing their work • Bring the class back together. Encourage students to comment on their own and each other’s designs. • Comment on their own and each other’s ideas, methods and approaches and compare with those of other artists. Suggested extension activity • Some students may wish to continue working on their design, or perhaps create another version of it. 5 30 15 10
