Senior Head-Start
College application is just around the corner for rising seniors. Although the admissions process
and pre-admission preparation requires individual effort and investment, a great chunk of it has
to do with guidance. The HSA College Guidance Team is arranging a college bound program for
the parents of rising seniors.
The agenda of the program is as follows:
1. Summer Opportunities
2. College search & college application tools
3. Test and essay prep
4. Senior International Trip
This interactive parent counselor gathering aims to help would be seniors to be better prepared
and smoothly go through the college admission process. The event will be on Wednesday, May
13, 2015, between 6:00-8:00 pm. Free dinner will be served at 6:00 -6:30 pm. Parents are kindly
requested to RSVP by signing an invitation letter that needs to be submitted in room 417 by
Monday, May 11th, 2015.
AP Examinations
Testing window for all AP exams is May 4th - May 15th. Please check the following table to
find out the exact date that each exam will be administered.
STAAR EOC tests will be administered on the following dates:
 US History and Algebra I : Tuesday, May 5th
 Biology: Wednesday, May 6th
 Make up for all three EOC tests: Thursday, May 7th and Friday, May 8th.
UT Dallas Camp
The due date is approaching very fast. HSAdv is offering great Residential Camp Experience at
UT Dallas. Anyone who is interested to join can get an application form from front office and
pay the required fee which is $250 for first 20 students. For more information contact Mr. Onel

CBE Registration Deadlines
July CBE registration deadline is May 15th. Counselor approval is the first step. Then the
registration should be submitted to CBE coordinator Mrs. Aydin, via email or in-person. Last
step is payment which has to be done through front desk. CBE windows might be found in
course selection guide under Counseling Department tab on the website as well. For more
information please contact Mrs. Aydin at [email protected] or go to room #415.
SIMS DATABASE
We are pleased to announce a new app for parent/guardians to keep track of their student's
progress. This new app is called SIMS DATABASE.
Please note: We are no longer promoting the formerly known app PARENT MOBILE.
The SIMS DATABASE app is available on both Android and iPhone.
Lunch Accounts
Ms. Irma started collecting all lunch balances. All students should have a zero balance by the end
of school year. If you are negative in your lunch account you will not be able to get school
breakfast or lunch until the end of the year! Please note that you are responsible for paying off
your lunch balance.
Pick up Policy
We would like to remind you that our school hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:25 p.m. Our
classes start at 8:05 a.m. and finish at 3:30 p.m. Students who do not ride the bus, are not in
tutorials, and are not in after school activities, must be picked up between 3:30 p.m. to 3:50
p.m. Students in after school activities must be picked up between 4:25 – 4:45 pm. If a student
is not picked up after 5:00 p.m., such incidences will be reported to the authorities and on the
4th occasion to Child Protective Services (CPS). Important: Harmony School of Advancement
has a right to call Child Protective Services, Houston Police Department/Harris County
Constable, or related authorities for the students who are on campus after 5:00 pm
Elections for the 2015-2016 PTO Board were held on Tuesday, April 23. We were able to
fill most positions but we are still looking for applicants the following board positions:
Assistant Treasurer- Perform financial duties in absence of the Treasurer. Be the second signer
on all disbursements. Research and lead the effort to gain and maintain 501(3)c status for the
PTO. (Effort: Hours required attaining 501(3)c status, then 4-6 hours per month)
Parliamentarian- Act as a consultant to assure that meetings and processes are conducted in
accordance with bylaws; advise on parliamentary procedures using Robert’s Rules of Order;
bring current copy of By-Laws and procedures to all meetings. Lead the nominating committee
and implement the election of board members. Parliamentarian is responsible for publicity and
keeping the official history of the PTO. (Effort: Several hours at election time, then 4-6 hours per
month).
Campus Support Liaison - Act as a liaison between the PTO and the faculty and staff at the
school. Identify opportunities for the PTO to assist the faculty and staff and bring these
opportunities to the board for discussion. (Effort: 2 hours per week at school).
A Practice Base Model of STEM Teaching STEM on stage
Dr. Sahin, of Harmony's research department has announced a new book focused on Harmony's
approach to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, is now
available for purchase. The book is titled STEM Students on the Stage (SOS).
The STEM S.O.S. model is a rigorous interdisciplinary STEM teaching approach that is teacher
facilitated, student-centered and directed through sequenced set of student projects. In contrast to
the other PBL models in the market, this model is standards-focused and substantial part of PBL
completion takes place out of classroom in a digital environment. The book provides insight into
Harmony's practices. It also shares data with the education community on how this approach has
impacted students

Bio FORCE is a hands-on STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) summer program of the National Center
for Therapeutics Manufacturing that allows high school students to learn about cutting-edge
research, medical discoveries, and bio manufacturing. Bio FORCE prepares students for college
programs in engineering and science, and ultimately, to pursue a career in the biotech or
pharmaceutical industries. Through grant funding, Bio FORCE is able to provide scholarships to
Texas 9th, 10th and 11th grade students so they can participate in one of three, 5-day, 4-night
residential summer academies.

Bio FORCE III - "My Role in the Future of Medicine": The third and final academy for returning

Celebration of Success
The Texas Association of Student Councils, sponsored by the Texas Association of Secondary
School Principals, is please to recognize our Student Council members the Outstanding Student
Council Award & the Community Service Award.
Our HSA Odyssey of the Mind team won 1st place at Regionals Tournament last month and
then, again, won 1st place at the State Championship this past Saturday. The team, consisting of
Hyder A, Zain A., Matthew C. , Pooja D., Maya F. and Salvi K. has been working diligent and
arduously for the past 8 months creating elaborate costumes, backdrops and props from recycled
trash items. They also crafted a hilarious, cleverly written script and their skillful performance
ensured them the 1st place among Texas High school teams. Now, they are moving on to World
Finals which will take place next month at Michigan State University.
Sueda C. Won the 1st Place at Texas Science and Engineering Fair at State Level
Sueda C. from Harmony School of Advancement qualified to compete at Texas Science and
Engineering Fair (TXSEF) at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio on
March 28, 2015. In high school division, each division is further broken into 17 categories such
as Animal Sciences, Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Biochemistry. Several Harmony
students were recognized at the TXSEF. But Sueda C., a 9th grader at our school, received
1st place award in senior division mathematical sciences category. In addition, she qualified to
attend Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy in June 2015. Congrats!
Congratulations to our Science Olympiad team for the 3rd place in Science Olympiad Regional
competition at Lone Star College this past Saturday, 3/28/2015! Our school had overall 5 events
placed in the top three. Adam A. and Sae O. placed 1st in “Disease Detectives”, Muaaz A.,
Rohan B., and Isis R. placed 2nd in “Experimental design”, Nina O. and Anthony N. placed 2nd
in “Fermi Questions”, Adam L. and Muaaz A. placed 3rd in “Green Generation” and Sae O. and
Nikki N. placed 2nd in “Write it-Do it”. Our school is qualified to the State Science Olympiad
Competition at Texas A&M University on April 24 & 25. Great work Science Olympiad Team!
Texas French Symposium! Harmony School of Advancement sent 13 students to competition
against over 40 other schools and hundreds of students from across Texas and our team won 1st
place for Team T-shirt (see the picture below) and 1st place in the game of Pétanque. We also
won in the following individual categories: Emma R. won 5th place for her watercolor art, Feba
V. won 2nd place for her pencil/charcoal art, Maria B. won 6th place for her French III drama
solo, Maya F. won 6th place for French I Listening Comprehension and Maya F. also won 1st
place in French I poetry! Congratulations to the team and to Emma, Feba, Maria and Maya!
Congratulations to the Hawks very own Andrew J. who has advanced to Finalist standing in the
National Merit Scholarship Program of 2015 by demonstrating through distinguished
performance high potential for future academic accomplishment.
On behalf of President Barack Obama, the Presidents Volunteer Service Award goes to
Aishwarya R. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant
amount of their time to serve their communities and their country. HS Advancement is very

offers a one-of-a-kind experience for Texas high school

BlueStamp Engineering is a summer program for high school
students to build projects that they are truly passionate about.
It is a 6 week program that runs four hours per day and
operates in San Francisco, NYC, Houston, and Denver. BSE
also invites guest speakers from various engineering fields
and start-up entrepreneurs to provide inspiration for a career
in technology.
Dual Credit enables a high school student to earn credit
towards high school graduation while simultaneously earning
college credit towards an associate's degree or workforce
program certificate. Dual Credit is approved and regulated by
the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
The UMHB College of Nursing will be offering a summer
camp that will provide upper level high school students the
opportunity to experience nursing school and college life at
UMHB. The summer program will include four facets:
academics, spirit and traditions of UMHB, faith and learning,
and campus life.
UTSA Engineering is offering its Engineering Summer
Camp to entering freshmen through graduating seniors.
Students who attend have the opportunity to experience
engineering through hands-on workshops, engaging

The STEP Forward Camp is a one-week residential
engineering introduction program for rising 12th graders. The
program is limited to fifty students. Participants stay on the
University of Houston campus in a dormitory. UH
engineering students serve as camp mentors and counselors. •
The STEP Forward Camp curriculum includes: • An
introduction to the various disciplines of engineering ("What
do engineers do?") • Project-based learning (hands-on team

The Young Scholars Program invites high school students
from throughout the U.S. and the world to an exceptional pre-

opportunities, and earn three university credits.
The National Space Club Scholars Project is a summer intern
experience for up to 30 high school students to work with
space scientists and engineers. The purpose of this project is
to provide students with an opportunity to experience how
research and development organizations operate on a day-today basis in direct support of NASA's mission to inspire the
next generation of explorers. Participants are assigned to work
with a technical professional in a field related to the student's
stated interests and expertise.

Sea Camp is a week-long residential adventure exploring the
wonders of the marine and estuarine environments for
juniors and seniors. The Program at Texas Tech University
helps the Scholars to have a hands-on practical research
experience with outstanding and experienced faculty. The
Scholars will receive a $750 tax-free stipend and room and
board. The Program includes fun activities, weekly seminars
and field trips. This Program provides opportunities for
