We had our final flea market of the season. Thank you to Evelyn Anderson, Willie Croskrey, Marlene Flannery,
Geri Gibson, Kim Huelsing, Julie, Terri Lesniak, Debbie Ritchie, Carol Rogers, Rosine Rothwell, Bill Sims, and

The vendors enjoyed themselves as well. It was a win-win for everyone involved. Thank you Terri Ritchie for
chairing this event!
A reminder: We have many new people joining the center. As we welcome them into the fold, let us remember
be patient. Please give them time to learn about how our various activities run and to allow them time to adjust.
The first set of ID cards have arrived and we will be distributing them soon. We have set a makeup date at
Jesse Gabriel’s Photography Studio for Nov 21st and THANK YOU to Rosanna Wright. She is busy working on

FOCUS ON THE INSTRUCTOR ~ STAN MEIDINGER
Submitted by Margaret Schraft
We have a new ukulele instructor at the SVSC, Stan Meidinger. Not only does he have a personal
background in music, but he also operates a company that performs Hawaiian and luau
entertainment at various venues. Stan was born in Santa Cruz 64 years ago and has spent most of
his life in this area. He now lives in the Live Oak area. Music has been an integral part of his life since
childhood. His mother was a vocalist, and Stan grew up singing in church and playing the accordion.
He now plays the ukulele, the bass, and the guitar as well as performing vocals.
Employed as a machinist, Stan worked throughout the county fabricating various metal products for
companies. His career allowed him the income to support and develop his hobby in Hawaiian music
and luau performances. He retired as a machinist, having last worked last at the cement plant in
Davenport.
During this past decade, Stan established and operated a company called Island Breeze
Entertainment. His production company recently performed at a Presidential fundraiser event in
Atherton. You can go online and learn about www.theislandbreezeband.com . View some of his
group’s performances at www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkxuhFIdiRA.
Locally, Stan teaches a ukulele building class at two schools, Bay View Elementary and Happy Valley
Elementary. The students build a ukulele. Then they are also taught how to play it. The Santa Cruz
Sunrise Rotary and Young Performers Showcase organizations help to fund this elective class.
The Scotts Valley Senior Center offers Stan’s ukulele class on Thursdays from 12 noon to 1 pm. He
specializes in teaching beginning to intermediate level students, and the class generally runs for six
weeks. It costs SVSC members $7.00 per class. Most students have their own ukuleles, but Stan has
a couple ukuleles that he can loan out to you until you can get one of your own

Technical and Other Important Senior Information
Passwords paSwoRdS pAswoRDsRgood– Are yours Safe?
I guess that you have figured out that I am about to lecture you on your “Passwords” and the
protection of them. I read an article recently about a huge batch of passwords from a Game Company
that were stolen. This theft was of about 32 million passwords. The amazing thing is that 300,000 of
those passwords were “123456”. Another large number of them was “abc123”. All Right, all of you out
there using these passwords, hold up your hand.
Today most companies, especially financial institutions require you to use combinations of letters,
numbers, and special characters. That stops you from using these type of passwords. Another
warning is to NOT use your name, family names, pet names, address, phone number or anything
else that people may know about you. If you have trouble remembering completely random
passwords, try this little trick. You have a daughter named Ruth and a son named George. These
would be BAD passwords, but how about trying this “ruTh-georGe2”. This is a combination of Upper
Case, lower Case, numbers, and special characters.
Experts will tell you to have a different password for everything you log in to. We seniors have enough
problems remembering other things so I recommend having 2 or 3 passwords. One would be for
financial things, one for shopping, and one for things like e-mail. As far as remembering your
passwords, you may have to write them down for reference, but be sure to keep your list in a Very
Safe place. Many years ago I went to a class on computer security and the teachers favorite story
was about a job he had. It was for a Secure military facility with locked doors, armed guards, and a
security check to even get into the building. After passing all of these security measures he was led to
the terminal that he was to use to do his work. He asked where to get the password for the system he
was about to work on was located. The person told him, “It is on that Post-It note stuck to the
Screen”. All that work and the secrets were protected by a Post-It Note.
Stay Safe and Secure. Ferd Bergholz
