WELCOME
“In a global economy where the most valuable skill you can sell is your
knowledge, a good education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity – it is
a pre-requisite.” –Barack Obama
Welcome to the fifteenth annual Honors Student Research Conference, and to the beautiful and inspiring
UC Irvine Campus. The Honors Transfer Council of California, in partnership with the University of
California, Irvine, is honored to be hosting nearly four hundred students from thirty-one California
community colleges today. The HTCC conference has continued to grow in size and in quality through
the years, and we are looking forward to the best conference yet! We are glad that you are here to take
advantage of the great opportunity this conference affords you for sharing your work to your peers at a
major research university.
Today you will hear about innovative research from a wide array of disciplines. The Conference Planning
Committee has attempted to organize presentation sessions around particular topics or disciplines, so it is
likely that you will be able to spend the whole day listening to talks on subjects that are near and dear to
your academic leanings. I encourage you, however, also to take the opportunity to attend a session on a
topic with which you are not particularly familiar and in so doing come away from this conference
enriched with knowledge that you might otherwise not have obtained. As you move on in your academic
career, you will have ample opportunity to attend conferences that are focused exclusively on your
research area of interest, but one of the things that makes this conference so unique is the diversity of
presentations.
I also encourage you to walk through the Pacific Ballroom and spend time looking at the record number
of poster presentations. The quality of the research for these posters is tremendous and illustrate how far
the scholarship for this conference has come over the past fifteen years. We hope over breakfast and
lunch that you will carry on conversations that have been sparked by the poster and oral presentations that
you have experienced. Remember to return to the Pacific Ballroom at the end of the day for the closing
remarks and the awarding of prizes for outstanding abstracts and posters. In the spirit of the conference,
please take time to introduce yourself to your fellow students. While those students may be from other
campuses now, you might very well find yourself to be classmates with some of them when you transfer
to a four-year college or university. We also hope you take time to introduce yourself to some of the UCI
representatives and thank them for making this event possible. You are highly encouraged to use part of
the day to explore the beautiful UC Irvine campus and to learn more about the opportunities UC Irvine
offers.
As honors students, you represent some of the best qualities of your respective colleges, reflecting not
only your own hard work and academic excellence, but also the teaching and mentoring of those who
have made a difference in your life. Embrace your role as an unofficial ambassador of your school and
use this day to represent your college and your community.
From all the members of the Honors Transfer Council of California, we wish you an educational and
enjoyable day.

CONFERENCE AWARDS
Presentation of all awards will be made during the closing ceremonies at the conference. Checks
will be sent after the conference to the Honors directors to be given to the winning student.
Poster Awards
The Honors Transfer Council of California will recognize the top research posters with an award
accompanied by a cash prize. Posters will be judged on visual presentation, creativity,
originality and reflection of sound scholarship. First-, second-, and third-place awards will be
given for research posters in the categories of Humanities/Social Sciences and Physical/Life
Sciences.
Outstanding Abstract Awards
These $500 awards are conferred by the HTCC to four or more students who have submitted toprated abstracts describing their conference presentation. The abstracts are judged on
organization, quality of writing, and originality and importance of the research.
HTCC Exceptional Achievement Scholarships
The Honors Transfer Council of California will give a number of $250 awards (two maximum
per college) to students graduating this year who show extraordinary improvement in
scholarship, especially related to performance in an honors program. Students must be nominated
by their honors director/coordinator. These students display exceptional perseverance in
overcoming obstacles to success in college or in an honors program. They have given
outstanding service to their college or community, or distinguished themselves as leaders in
cultural or athletic activities. Finally, their application essays reveal a high quality of thought and
expression.
Juan Lara Scholarship
Dr. Lara created this scholarship in order to give special honor to a student who has overcome
great financial, personal, cultural or other obstacles to achieve significant success as an honor
student. Candidates for this $800 award have been nominated by their Honors Directors for the
Exceptional Achievement Scholarship. In conferring this award, we also honor Juan Lara,
Assistant Vice Chancellor Emeritus of UC Irvine, a generous supporter of this conference and of
our efforts to serve community college honors students. As an energetic and inspirational
Director for the UCI Center for Educational Partnerships, Dr. Lara created opportunities for
countless non-traditional students, leading them to seek—and attain—the highest success in their
academic lives and career.
The HTCC DIRECTOR’S SCHOLARSHIP
The Honors Transfer Council of California awards its Director’s Scholarship annually to the
student who has submitted the finest presentation abstract and been judged as exemplifying the
qualities of an outstanding honors student. The Director’s Scholarship of $1,000 is the highest
honor HTCC bestows on a student. Presentation of this award will be made during the closing
ceremonies of the conference.
The Director’s Scholarship, created to recognize and reward student excellence, also honors
each year a vital director who is a member of the Honors Transfer Council of California. This
person has made an outstanding contribution to the students in his or her honors program as well
as to the HTCC—and thus to all the students served by this organization.
This year, the HTCC dedicates the Director’s Scholarship to Carolyn Kuykendall. This is
perhaps the most fitting dedication we have ever done, because without Professor Kuykendall
there would be no award to award, no HTCC Building Bridges Conference at all.
While serving in her first of several terms as president of the HTCC, Professor Kuykendall
developed the idea of a university-sponsored community college research conference and made it
happen. Her vision, guidance, administration, and continual effort not only established this
conference but also helped it grow into a central part of the experience of honors education in
California.
This conference is something we can see, but Professor Kuykendall was responsible also for
many things HTCC honors students have that aren’t as visible. She negotiated numerous honors
transfer partnership agreements. Her work at the National Collegiate Honors Council, of which
she was created a Fellow in 2013, increased the participation of and respect given to community
college honors programs at the national level. Her advocacy for support of honors at both
Saddleback College and Mt. San Antonio College raised the bar for programs statewide, helping
many other honors programs increase resources. Most invisibly but perhaps most important, she
is one of the people to whom honors directors turn for advice, and her gracious sharing of her
great expertise has been an invaluable help to both new and seasoned directors nationwide.
Professor Kuykendall’s career as an honors director began with her having to revive a program
in crisis. It ended with her passing on to a successor a program that is thriving, widely respected,
and developing even further. Along the way, she taught innumerable honors courses, touching
students’ lives directly with her love of literature.
But our debt today is mostly to her monumental work outside the classroom. Without her, the
California community college honors experience would be much poorer. In fact, considering the
repeated budgetary crises the state has faced, it might not be here at all. Thanks to the activity
and leadership of people like Carolyn, it is assumed now that a comprehensive community
college must have an Honors Program. It is assumed that community college Honors students
should be especially welcomed to transfer institutions. Most pertinent for today, it is assumed
that community college Honors students should have research conferences focused around them.
It is most fitting that we honor Carolyn Kuykendall with the Director’s Award for these reasons.
FINAL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
“No one who achieves success does so without acknowledging the help of others. The wise and
confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.”-Alfred North Whitehead
We want to thank everyone who has helped make the fifteenth Honors Student Research
Conference possible. Particular gratitude is given to all the current past HTCC presidents, whose
conference organizing vision, expertise, and continuing advice helped to make everyone else’s
work so much easier. In particular, Erik Ozolins, Cristina Yamanaka, Linda Diaz and Derek
Milne have patiently offered their advice, tireless work ethic and institutional memory to help
make this conference stay true to the vision and tradition of excellence this conference is known
for.
The research conference would not be possible without the selfless contributions of the various
conference committee members. These are dedicated professionals who received no
compensation other than the pleasure of sharing our students’ experiences at the conference.
Special thanks needs to be given to Megan for his assistance with updating and managing the
website, to the tireless team of Christina Yamanaka and Erik Ozolins for organizing today’s
sessions and putting the program together. Erik you have been a wonderful colleague and friend.
This conference exists this year because of your hard work behind the scenes. I also want to
thank the magnificent Linda Diaz for her expertise and hard work in coordinating student
registrations and requests in addition to handling the conference registration table. Derek Milne
did a wonderful job keeping everyone in connected as communications chair. Thanks as well to
Alannah Rosenberg for providing vital support in organizing conference volunteers. We owe a
debt of gratitude to the members of the Scholarship Committee, chaired by John Oakes, and to
all his committee members, who gave long hours of their time and discernment in judging the
essays of the scholarship applicants. Much appreciation goes to Tim Adell, the editor of Building
Bridges, a compilation of abstracts from the Honors Student Research Conference, and to
Christine Abriam for preparing this conference program for us. Finally, thanks to all the
conference student volunteers and moderators for taking time from their Saturday to help make
the conference a success.
We encourage participants to meet our UCI partners in this project. For this year's conference,
we were provided with invaluable assistance from Dale Leaman, our UCI liaison, as well as
Darren Endo. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Brent Yunek, Vice
Chancellor of Enrollment Services and Mr. Said Shokair, Director of the Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Office. We recognize that our partnership with UC Irvine is one of the
most important aspects of our organization’s success, and it is difficult to find the words to
express our gratitude for years of exemplary hospitality and service to our organization.
To all of you who shared the brightness of your minds in our celebration of learning, not only by
moderating or presenting, but also by the vital contribution of attentive listening, we thank you.
Your involvement has been essential to the success of this conference. Finally, thanks to all the
family members and friends who spent their day at our conference. We hope you had an
inspiring and memorable experience today.
