HHS FFA Does It Again!
Hughson FFA was able to take 19 students this year to the 87th annual State FFA Leadership
Conference held in Fresno on April 18th-21st. The conference is packed full of exciting leadership
opportunities for students to participate in. They are able to attend a Career Show, select from several
workshops presented by colleges, and listen to dynamic speakers over the four day event. Mark Borges
competed in the State FFA Job Interview Contest on Thursday, April 16th. Mark was fortunate to make it
out of the Preliminary Round and advanced to the Final Round that evening. However, it would be
Tuesday, April 21st before results were announced. It is with great pleasure that we announce Mark
Borges was awarded top honors as he was the State FFA Job Interview Contest winner and will now advance to the National
Competition held in October in Louisville, Kentucky.
Our Farm Power, Poultry Judging, Agronomy, and Milk Quality teams conference began Saturday, April 18th. All four teams
competed in their various contest areas. For Farm Power, this contest serves as their State Finals Round, and they did
extremely well, placing as the 3rd High Team in the State. Agronomy and Poultry Judging have their State Finals Round this
coming weekend at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, but they also did quite well with each team placing 6th in the State.
Sunday served as another exciting competition day for two students. Jeff Gaylord and Nicole Hobby were selected as finalists
for the State Proficiency Award in their respective categories. Jeff competed in the area of Agricultural Services and Nicole
competed in the area of Goat Production. Sunday morning consisted of an interview process with industry experts. Based on
their previously submitted written application and their interview scores, both Jeff and Nicole were announced as State
winners for their categories. Their applications are now being submitted to the National FFA for scoring to determine if they
meet the qualifications for National Finalist status.
It has been another great year for Hughson FFA. We have had numerous stories of success, and it can only be attributed to
the excellent quality of students we have come through our doors on a daily basis.
Library Books
Academics Alive!
All students must be
cleared in the library
before the last day of
school, or you will lose
a citizenship credit. This
means that books must be turned in,
fines paid, lost books paid for, etc. It
behooves you to turn in books each
day of finals week (or before if not
needed). Otherwise, you will be in a
long line. Those who decide to wait
until the last day to turn in ALL of their
books will go to the end of the
line. Priority will be given to those students who have brought in books each
day. Thanks for your help!
Seniors have been working diligently throughout the year
to complete and submit scholarship applications. Academics Alive! is the time when seniors are honored with
awards and scholarships. Students who will be recognized at Academics Alive! will receive a letter or phone
call prior to the awards ceremony, notifying families of
student recognition. Academics Alive! will be held on
Tuesday, May 19th from 7-9 p.m. in the HHS theater. As
a courtesy to presenters, seniors who are unable to attend
senior awards should notify Mrs. Moring prior to the
event. If a senior receives a scholarship from outside the school,
please notify Mrs. Moring as soon
as possible in order to be recognized at the event.
Summer School
Summer School sign-ups are in full swing! There are two options available to students. The first option
is offered at Hughson High School for credit recovery only. Students will
be allowed to take up to 10 credits in Summer School. Classes will run
from June 1st-26th. Students will work with a teacher daily from 8:00 am12:00 pm Monday-Friday. At HHS, students will have the opportunity to
register for the following courses:
 Math I (Second Semester)
 Geometry (Second Semester)
 English 9-12
 Geography, World History, U.S. History, and Government
 State Requirements
The second option is the county program, which will offer courses in math, science, English, electives,
and social science. The county program will be done in packets or online. Classes will be held from June
5th-July 17th. Students can take courses through the county program for credit recovery and/or
improvement. All A-G courses through the county program will be held at Valley Charter High School.
Please note that Valley Charter High School is NOT NCAA approved. If you are interested in Summer
School, please see a counselor or Learning Director for registration materials.

parents of current 9th
grade students, who
will be entering the
10th grade next year, are encouraged to contact the office to
schedule an appointment for tenth grade academic counseling.
This program is a supplementary guidance program intended
for students who will be sophomores during the 2015-16
school year.
Through this opportunity, students and their parents will have
the chance to meet with a Learning Director to create a course
of action based on students’ individual post high school goals.
Students and parents will work with the Learning Director to
review progress and develop an action plan for the next three
years, which will take into account the students’ college and
career preparation. During the meeting, students and parents
will review graduation and college entrance requirements.
Students will be encouraged to reevaluate their four-year plans
to best prepare them for college and career aspirations.

Time: 10:00pm – 5:00am
Students must arrive before 11:00pm on Friday night to be admitted
and must stay until 5am

The cost of a ticket is $40.00 which includes a t-shirt,
all the food you can eat, outstanding entertainment, music, dancing, games,
and fantastic door prizes.
A grand prize drawing of $1000 will be held at 4:30am.
Must be present to win!
All seniors who have purchased a ticket prior to the
Academics Alive ceremony will be eligible for a $100 cash drawing.
Bring: light jacket and a fun attitude!!!

STAFF APPRECIATION DAY RESOLUTION APPROVED
The Board adopted Resolution No. 14/15:12 declaring May 4, 2015, as HUSD Staff Appreciation Day. The
teachers, support staff and administrators of the Hughson Unified School District are a very talented and caring
group of professionals who are willing to do whatever it takes to help students be successful. HUSD students
receive an outstanding education thanks to our very high quality and conscientious staff.

HIGH SCHOOL TEXTBOOK ADOPTION ON DISPLAY AT DISTRICT OFFICE
The HUSD has begun the process of reviewing two high school textbooks with the goal of making a
recommendation for adoption at the May board meeting. Materials include the Gardener’s Art Through the Ages,
15th edition and Introduction to Veterinary Science 2nd edition. The new textbooks will be put into use in fall 2015.
These materials will be on display for one month at the HUSD district office.

Spring Sports Awards
On Wednesday, May 20, all athletes
participating in a spring sport will be honored at the Spring Sports Awards. The
banquet is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. in the theater.
After various athletes are recognized in the theater,
each sport will be dismissed to
designated rooms on campus to conduct individual
sports awards.
