WHAT IS A EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE?
• A cultural event of a large, international scale
• Awarded to one city in two EU Member States every year
- in 2017 Aarhus and Pafos (Cyprus)
• Exhibitions, performances and festive gatherings that take
over cities or regions for an entire year.

HOW IT ALL STARTED…
• In 1985, the European Union Ministers were the minds behind
the project that today is known as the European Capital of
Culture.
• The European Capital of Culture was created to highlight,
promulgate and strengthen the cultural diversity that exists in
Europe.
• The programme builds ties between Europe’s different
communities through an increased understanding of cultural
differences and similarities.
• Athens was appointed the first European City of Culture in
1985. In 1999 however, the programmed was renamed to
European Capital of Culture.
• Today, the two EU selected host countries have at least 6 years
to appoint a city that will hold the title of ’European Capital of
Culture.’

THE PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
THE AARHUS 2017 CULTURAL PROGRAMME IS CREATED ON A
DRAMATURGY BASED ON THE FOUR SEASONS OF THE YEAR
Winter: The season of darkness, where people come together,
light candles and make wishes. This is the time of the grand
opening and closing events, which will frame 2017 as a year of
transition, where Aarhus and the region will transform from one
status to another.
Spring: We focus on our history and ask: ‘Who are we and where
do we come from?’
Summer: We look for new answers to common European
challenges and invite the world in.
Autumn: With history in mind, we look towards the future.
