The canoes of the past could reach a length
of 100 feet and carry up to 40 people and
supplies. These vessels, called walap, were not
fast. Open-sea voyages could last well over a
month. The tipnol was a smaller and speedier
canoe, used mainly for fishing inside the lagoons.
It could carry 10 or more and, if necessary, be
used for ocean voyaging. The korkor was a
small paddling outrigger, sometimes fitted with
sail, used for lagoon work. Sails were triangular

High school seniors one step closer to graduation

T
he class of 2013 took their final step towards graduation
with the Baccalaureate celebration on Sunday. The Blessed
Sacrament church was packed
with parents, teachers, Kwajalein
High School alumni and other community members all supporting the
2013 graduating seniors. The night
was filled with heartfelt speeches,
prayers and performances. The
Baccalaureate celebration is one of
the many ways that the Kwajalein
community honors the graduating
high school class before they are
sent off into the “real world.”
The night began as the seniors
processed down the aisle of the
church on a mat that read, “Follow
your dreams.” While they made their
way to front of the church, John
Sholar and Rachel DeLange read
their reminiscent personal introductions. Upon finding their seats,
the graduates were addressed by
Master of Ceremonies, Raymond
Drefus, and the community was
welcomed to the Baccalaureate.
Mr. Jason Huwe was then invited
to bless the class with an opening prayer. “Lord we thank you so
much for the joy we have celebrating these graduates today. We
thank you for their parents, friends
and family for their time, effort and
love that has been poured over
them in anticipation for this day.”
Huwe set the thankful, celebratory
tone for the evening before introducing the first act of the night.
Kori Dowell sang as Eva Seeyle
accompanied her on guitar. The
two girls impressed the crowd with
their performance of “The Time of
My Life” by singer David Cook. The
song represented the cherishing of
memories and the anticipation for
times ahead. Dowell and Seelye
were the first of three student acts
on Sunday.
After the first performance of the
night, Tarah Yurovchak took the
stage as the class’s motivational
speaker. Yurovchak, a sixth grade
teacher at George Seitz Elementary,
taught many of the graduates when
they were in elementary school.
The speech took an unexpected
turn when Yurovchak pulled out a
“cat in the hat” pair of glasses and
hat. She read the class Dr. Seuss’
story, Oh the Places You’ll Go! The
book took listeners on a ridiculous
journey through the ins and outs of
life while portraying how unpredictable it can be at times. Yurovchak
ended her speech by saying, “Failures happen and they help us grow
stronger and become more humble.” She placed a large importance
on going out and conquering the
world, regardless of the obstacles

and setbacks that may lie ahead.
Following
the
motivational
speech, four graduates performed
the second act of the night. Mary
McPhatter, Natasha Tomas, Eva
Seelye, and Kori Dowell did a hula
dance to the song “Home in the Islands,” by Henry Kapono. The girls
captivated the audience with their
beautiful, fluid motions. Being able
to demonstrate such a unique,
island-style dance before leaving
Kwajalein is extremely special.
Masina McCollum took the podium next, as she was chosen to be
the night’s inspirational speaker.
McCollum was born and raised on
Kwajalein, so she has a firm understanding of what moving from
a place like Kwajalein means. McCollum placed a bag containing a
live hermit crab under each graduate’s chair. As they opened their
bags, there was a large range of
reactions; some were laughing,
some were excited, and some were
completely horrified! The hermit
crab was not used solely for shock
value, however. McCollum used the
hermit crab to symbolize persistence, resiliency and adaptation to
new environments. She described
characteristics of a hermit crab
such as their tendency to change
shells often, overcome rather difficult tasks in front of them, all
while maintaining a soft inside. As
McCollum wrapped up her speech,
she reminded all of the Kwaj-kids
to keep the hermit crab in their
minds as they left Kwajalein and to
“be strong, island strong!”
The inspirational speech was followed by the third and final perfor-
4
mance of the night. The Ri’katak
students, Edward Bobo, Hagar Kabua, Glothelia Mijena and Michael
Pedro sang a song called “Jino,” by
Li-Takeh Samson. The five graduates’ voices harmonized perfectly
behind the smooth chords of the
ukulele, played by Hagar Kabua.
Paula Fluhrer rounded out the
night’s speeches, covering the spiritual aspect. Fluhrer taught many
of the graduates earlier in their
high school years. She spoke about
her own personal experience, and
how she had some difficulties when
she first transitioned into college.
Fluhrer spoke about getting caught
up in life’s superficial entities, such
as academic performance, appearance, and popularity. She explained
that these aspects of life don’t often
bring true happiness. Fluhrer advised the class that “If you really
want to shine…you need a source
of light inside of you.” Her words
were especially impactful considering all of the new experiences, obstacles, and distractions that the
graduates will soon face.
Fr. Victor Langhans, Catholic
priest here on Kwajalein, closed the
program with a benediction. “Send
upon these graduates and fill them
with your wisdom and blessings,
that they remain humble in heart.”
With those words of faith, the class
of 2013 processed out of the church
to the tune of “Gone, Gone, Gone,”
by Phillip Phillips. The graduates
lined up outside of the church and
were greeted by friends, family,
and community members. It’s on
to graduation for this group of 17

Did you know?
Both pools on Kwajalein are salt water flow-through
pools using water directly from the ocean. Water is
pumped in from the intake pipe pump located by the
Ocean View Club. Once pumped in, the water splits in
the pipe and travels either to the Adult Pool or the Family
Pool, filling them through a series of small jets in the
shallow end. Water is constantly circulated through use
of the gutter systems and drains located in the pools.
This water drains through outtake pipes which pump out
directly onto the reef. Both pools receive a small amount
of chlorine daily, which is regulated by environmental
standards so as not to affect the reef, ocean or marine
life. No other chemicals such as pH regulator, rust and
calcium deposit remover or algaecide are used. As a
result, water temperature and clarity can be affected by
many natural factors such as sunlight, rain, tide tables,
algae bloom and salinity.
