Proto Labs
Advanced Manufacturing: Accelerating the
Product Development Process & Reducing
Risk
Robert is currently Vice President and General Manager,
Americas at Proto Labs, a leading online and
technology-enabled quick-turn manufacturer of custom
parts for prototyping and low- to mid-volume
production. At Proto Labs, Robert has also held roles as
Chief Technology Officer and Director of Business
Development. Prior to joining Proto Labs, Robert held
leadership roles at Honeywell and McKinsey & Company.
Robert holds BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering
and Computer Science.
3D CAD software has enabled a fast and agile part design
process. But what happens when the part moves into
manufacturing? Traditionally, the manufacturing process to
produce production-ready parts is manual and as a result,
lengthy. Advanced manufacturing processes, which include
3D printing as well as rapid injection molding and CNC
machining, have changed that. Instead of waiting 4-12
weeks for parts, the wait time is drastically reduced to 1-15
days. Speed to market is a critical factor to success, and
advanced manufacturing allows for rapid progression
through the cycle of prototyping, testing and revising
products.
