Labor Liaison in the Community February 2015 “The miracle is this: the more we share, the more we have.” - Leonard Nimoy. KAKO’O I NA KEIKI: SLIPPER DRIVE SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 2015 The first keiki initiative of 2015 is about to kickoff next month and we need your kokua! The Slipper Drive is an essential need in our DOE Schools due to many keiki coming to school barefoot, wearing partially broken or inadequate footwear or breaking their slippers during school hours. This is where slipper donations from our community make a difference for keiki. Annually a school survey is distributed to the DOE Public Elementary Schools on Hawaii Island accessing the need of their academic community and slippers was a commonality as a top need amongst the schools. As a recognized top need we are continuing the slipper drive initiative to fundraise brand new pairs of slippers from our community as well as purchasing additional pairs of slippers to give back to our keiki. In 2014 100% of all DOE Public Elementary Schools on Hawaii Island received brand new pairs of slippers donated by our sponsors and community members. Schools received anywhere between 50 to 90 pairs of slippers based on population size and critical need. 1,000 pairs of brand new slippers were collected island-wide last year and we want to achieve beyond that number! But we can’t do it without your help! This year our goal is to raise 1,500 pairs of slippers from the community! This goal will allow us to increase the amount of slippers donated to the schools to help keiki-in-need. BELOW: The 2014 Slipper Drive Live Remote Collection with KAPA Radio at KTA Puainako.
