“Restaurant Row” is the blocklong street in the center of Peekskill,
which runs from the iconic Gazebo on
Park Street to Route 6 Main Street.
Every weekend, the tree-lined street is
closed to traffic, Saturdays from 3:00 –
11pm and Sundays from 1:00 –9pm,
with live Music performances beginning at 6pm. All six restaurants on the
street have outdoor dining, with additional audience seating by the stage.
The pedestrian walkway and weekly
music fest is one-of-a-kind in Northern
Westchester. Dining al fresco on a
beautiful summer evening – as the
moon rises above the street and live
music fills the air – is something truly
special.
North Division Street is home to 12
Grapes Restaurant, Division Street
Grill, La Viletta II Pizzeria, Rubens
Mexican, G&H Caribbean café and The
Quiet Man Public House. Various artisans have tables on the street, and
shops such as the Susan Obrant Gallery, Speakeasy Tattoo and the newly

do at the Block Party. The music has
been varied and interesting, including
classic and contemporary Rock, Jazz,
Acoustic, R&B, Broadway, Cabaret, and
even Rap.

the downtown Business Improvement
District (BID), S-Cort Realty, Central
Media Systems and other local businesses. EMBARK|Peekskill has assisted

Armonk Outdoor Art Show
will continue its long tradition
of showcasing a fresh and
diverse array of art. Over 185
juried artists will be featured;
52 new to this year’s show; displaying their creations in a
broad spectrum of media: oils/
acrylics, watercolors, mixed
media, printmaking/drawing/
pastels, sculpture, photography/digital art, wearable art,
and fine crafts.
This year’s show will also
feature free guided tours,
emerging artists, and funfilled, kid-friendly activities.
We will once again offer personal shoppers, who will be
available to help visitors find
and select art that best suits
their taste and decor. There is
ample free parking on site, as
well as a diverse food court.
On Friday, September 19th
at 7 p.m., the North Castle
Public Library will show a free
art-themed film with commentary by LIU professor Valerie
Franco. On Saturday, September 20th at 8 pm in the
library’s Whippoorwill Hall,
jazz legend, Charlie Lagond &
Friends, will bring exciting
new interpretations of contemporary and jazz favorites,
all infused with infectious
Latin rhythms.
The Art Show will kick off
the weekend before, at 9:45
a.m. on Sunday, September
14th, with Jamie’s 5K “Run for
Love.” Jamie Love was a member of the Byram Hills cross
country and track & field
teams, with a notable work
history at Hickory & Tweed,
one of the race’s sponsors.
There will be both adult and
children’s races for all who
would like to participate.

Cheap Trick vocalist Robin Zander
loves to sing so much that he is also touring with his new solo band. The Robin Zander Band has been together since 2012 and
Robin boasts about the musical skills of his
new band mates which include drummer
Steve Luongo, guitarist Mark Hitt and bassist Larry Hobbs.
Luongo, Hitt and Hobbs, known collectively as TorQue, have been performing
together for almost a decade. Luongo and
Hitt have also performed with Zander on
and off for the past 10 years. The real story
of longevity is between Steve Luongo and
Mark Hitt.
These two influential musicians began
their musical journey together when Mark
joined Rat Race Choir in 1974. Drummer
Steve Luongo, one of the founders of the
band, says the addition of Mark Hitt on
guitar completed the RRC sound. They performed together in Rat Race Choir for
almost a quarter of a century until their
careers took them each in different directions. Though both of them have gone on
to successful careers they maintain a working relationship to this day.
In the 40 years that followed that first
show with Rat Race Choir, this highly
respected duo has recorded or performed
with John Entwistle (The Who), Brian Johnson & Cliff Williams (AC/DC), Jack Bruce
(Cream), Leslie West (Mountain), Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), Buck Dharma
(Blue Oyster Cult), Keith Emerson, Rick
Derringer, Dave Mason, Eddie Money,
Carol King and actor Bruce Willis... the list
goes on.
In 2002, they formed TorQue and
recorded an album of new original material dubbed TorQue 103103, released on
Halloween in 2003.
TorQue recorded a live performance
for DVD at BB Kings NYC. The show was
also broadcast live in Hi-DEF on HD.net.
Luongo & Hitt were featured twice on the
album Songs from the Material World, a
tribute to George Harrison released by
Koch Records. They recorded “Old Brown
Shoe” with Leslie West as well as the Beatles classic “Here Comes the Sun” with John
Entwistle.
In addition to their unique blend of
progressive rock Steve and Mark have written songs for several artists in a variety of
genres from rock & roll to country and
pop. They have composed music in mul-
tiple styles for films, televisions and documentaries which they continue to do as
the primary composers for the “Double O”
network.
Steve Luongo and Mark Hitt are once
again playing together in The Robin Zander Band along with their bassist Larry
Hobbs. This past July, Steve and Mark celebrated 40 years of musical collaboration
which is a rare occurrence by any standard.
They continue to perform together in concert and create new material in the studio.
One last noteworthy stat, is that they
remain friends which is another rarity in
the music industry.
The Robin Zander Band performs
music from their collective history such as
The Who, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Rat Race
Choir and of course Cheap Trick along with
new original material. Robin Zander (The
Man of 1000 Voices) is considered one of
the greatest vocalists in rock history.

There have been many headlines this year regarding New
York State’s plans to phase out
Sheltered Workshops. A Sheltered
Workshop is a vocational program
for people with disabilities. Those
attending Sheltered Workshops
are able to earn a paycheck while
further developing their vocational skills in hopes of finding a
job. The story hit home last
month when the Journal News
published a cover story on July 29
outlining how this would affect
people living in our area who are
now attending the Keon workshop in Peekskill.
So what will become of the estimated 8,020 people currently
attending New York’s 113 Sheltered Workshops? For many, the
best alternative will be to find an
integrated, community based
work setting. In short, that means
a company who hires people of
all abilities to work side by side,
earning the same pay and receiving the same benefits. Enter Vicki
Sylvester, Ph.D.
Vicki Sylvester has spent more
than 30 years providing support
to the developmentally disabled.
For the past 15 years she has been
CEO of Community Based Services, a North Salem based notfor-profit organization that specializes in residential opportunities and community programming
for people with autism and developmental disabilities. Vicki has
seen the writing on the wall and
in 2014 she launched a second
not-for-profit company named
Good Reasons, a dog treat company on a mission. They create
delicious dog treats while providing opportunity and employment
for people of all abilities.
“When the State of New York
asked its network of providers to
help create jobs for people with
disabilities, I saw a great opportunity to take this initiative to a
new level,” says Sylvester. “Knowing that by doing so, we would
also be able to offer the opportunity for people to experience
social fulfillment in the workplace
as they produce these treats, it
felt as good a reason as any. That
is where the brand’s name derives
and we are thrilled to share it.”

many treat flavors are available.

The highly entertaining “little orchestra”
known as Pink Martini has been described as a
rollicking around-the-world musical adventure featuring a dozen musicians and vocalists
who perform a multilingual repertoire on
concert stages and with symphony orchestras
throughout the world. The band is fresh off
their eighth studio album, Dream A Little
Dream, featuring the powerful voices of colead singers China Forbes and Storm Large.
They will bring their dynamic stage show to
The Ridgefield Playhouse on Thursday, September 25, at 8 p.m. No. 109 Cheese & Wine

Drawing inspiration from music from all
over the world and crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop, Thomas Lauderdale founded Pink Martini in 1994. Their
first song “Sympathique” became an overnight sensation in France, was nominated for
“Song of the Year” at France’s Victoires de la
Musique Awards, and to this day remains a
mantra (“Je ne veux pas travailler” or “I don’t
want to work”) for striking French
workers. Says Lauderdale, “We’re very much
an American band, but we spend a lot of time
abroad and therefore have the incredible diplomatic opportunity to represent a broader,
more inclusive America… the America which
remains the most heterogeneously populated
country in the world… composed of people of
every country, every language, every
religion.”
Pink Martini has collaborated and performed with numerous artists, including
Jimmy Scott, Carol Channing, Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Henri Salvador,
Georges Moustaki, Michael Feinstein, Japanese legend Hiroshi Wada, Italian actress and
songwriter Alba Clemente, and the list goes

Lewis Black, Grammy Award-winning stand-up comedian, is one of the
most prolific and popular performers
working today. Black came into
national prominence with his appearances on The Daily Show in 1996.
Those exhibitions on The Daily Show
led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In
2001, Black won Best Male Stand-Up at
the American Comedy Awards. Black

MARSHALL TUCKER BAND AT TARRYTOWN MUSIC HALL
In the early fall of 1973 Marshall Tucker
Band was still a young and hungry group
out to prove themselves every time they hit
the stage. Their debut album had already
spawned numerous hits. Way Out West!Live from San Francisco 1973, their latest CD
is a time capsule from that period. “We
were a bunch of young guys who didn’t
know any boundaries” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug
Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of the Marshall Tucker Band took them
very far indeed. More than three decades
later this galvanizing San Francisco performance reminds us how it all began.
Still led today by founding member
and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a
time and place in music that will never be
duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the
band’s current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of the Marshall Tucker Band sound. Current members
include slide guitarist Stuart Swanlund who
joined the band in 1989, the highly
respected drummer B.B. Borden, a former
member of both Mother’s Finest and The
Outlaws, multi-instrumentalist Marcus
Henderson of Macon, Georgia, plays flute,
saxophone and keyboards in addition to
lead and background vocals, Pat Elwood on
bass guitar, and Rick Willis on lead guitar
and vocals, both of Spartanburg SC, are disciples of the Caldwell Brothers. Together
they present a powerful stage presence as
they continue to tour the country and continue to be powerful force in the world of
music.
The Marshall Tucker Band got its start
in Spartanburg, S.C. when Gray teamed up
with Tommy Caldwell and Toy Caldwell,
Paul T. Riddle, George McCorkle and Jerry
Eubanks, borrowing the name “Marshall
Tucker” from a piano tuner whose name
was found on a key ring in their old
rehearsal space. In 1972, they signed with
Capricorn Records, the same label that
guided The Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie, and others to national fame. The MTB
opened shows for The Allman Brothers in
1973, and the following year, they began to
headline their own shows across America
due to the platinum-plus sales of their
debut album. They toured constantly playing sheds, stadiums, theaters, fairs, and festivals.
In years to come, The Marshall Tucker
Band would wow critics and influence
major country acts like Alabama, The Kentucky Headhunters, Confederate Railroad,
and Travis Tritt with its definitive blend of
rock, rhythm & blues, jazz, country, and
gospel. Now, thanks to the expanding
scope of today’s music, a new generation of
fans is learning what the rest of their fans
have known for so long- that good music
knows no boundaries. Along the way, the
band has recorded twenty two studio
albums, three DVDs, three live albums and
many compilations.
In 1980, Tommy Caldwell died as a
result of injuries from an auto accident. In
1984, Toy Caldwell, George McCorkle, and
Paul Riddle decided to retire. Doug Gray
and Jerry Eubanks with the blessings of the
other three continued to record and perform as the Marshall Tucker Band. 1n 1993,
Toy Caldwell, who wrote the majority of
their songs, passed away, as did George
McCorkle in 2007. Jerry Eubanks retired in
1996 and Doug Gray continues to lead the
current band of fine musicians winning new
young fans as well as satisfying the loyal
fans of several generations.
Years of rigorous tour schedules earned
the band the respect of critics and countless
dedicated fans. With hit singles like “Heard
It In a Love Song”, “Fire On The Mountain”,
“Can’t You See,” and “Take The Highway,”
the Marshall Tucker Band earned seven
gold and three platinum albums while they
were on the Capricorn Records label. During the ‘90s, the MTB scored four hit singles
on Billboard’s country chart and one on Billboard’s gospel chart. Their music has also
been featured on the soundtracks of movies such as Smokey and the Bandit, The Pur-
La Famiglia
suit of D.B. Cooper, Shipwrecked, Crank 2,
Don’t Mess with Zohan, Stop Loss, Swing
Vote, Taking Chance and many others as
well as many TV Shows.
“The buying public never really cared
whether we were country or rock and roll”
says Gray. “They called us a Southern rock
band, but we have always played everything from country, jazz, blues, Rock &
Roll and all things in-between. As we’ve
become older,” Gray grins, eyes twinkling,
“our Southern heritage seems to come out
even more. But no matter how old we get,
we can still rock your socks off.” Gray also
notes that people have gotten “married
and buried” to classic MTB songs like
“Desert Skies” and “Can’t You See.” After
41 years, The Marshall Tucker Band continues to be played on classic rock and country
radio, and they have never stopped touring.
Today the band records on its own
Ramblin’ Records Label which is distributed
by Sony by way of a joint venture with
Shout! Factory and continues to record new
material and continues to regularly tour the
country to the delight of their fans, old and
new.

LIVINGSTON TAYLOR COMES TO YORKTOWN STAGE
Yorktown Stage will be transformed into a teaching stage and
later a concert hall on Saturday, September 20th as The Justin Veatch
Fund hosts Livingston Taylor as headliner for its end-of-summer benefit
concert.
Taylor– a singer/songwriter/musician who has written and recorded
more than a dozen albums, including
hit songs for his brother, James, and
travels around the country performing--is also a full professor at Berklee
College of Music in Boston.
On the afternoon of the show,
Mr. Taylor will teach a two-hour condensed version of his class on stage
performance which is among the
most popular at Berklee. We are hoping area performers, both young and
old, will sign up, says Jeffrey Veatch,
President of The Justin Veatch Fund.
Signing up for the class also includes
general admission to the evening concert, where those attending will see
that Livingston doesn’t only talk the
talk but also walks the walk when it
comes to thrilling an audience. Those

On stage, Livingston Taylor brings
together the pure joy of performance
with professionalism gained from 40
years experience. From top-forty hits,
“I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll
Come Running,” to “I Can Dream of
You” and “Boatman” both recorded
by his brother James, Livingstons creative output has continued unabated.
His musical knowledge has inspired a
varied repertoire, and he is equally at
home with a range of musical genres-
folk, pop, gospel, jazz and from
upbeat storytelling to touching ballads.
One fan recently wrote, “When
you go to see Livingston Taylor perform on stage, he transforms love, joy
and spirituality into something so tangible that you can carry it home with

New York charity which presents
annual music scholarships to graduating high school seniors and co-spon-
sors monthly open mic nights with
the Yorktown Teen Center.

THEATRE: THE Wizard of Oz

Watching The Wizard of Oz at WBT
made me feel like a kid again. You know
what? It felt good, even if I am not in Kansas
anymore (or ever). Devon Perry, with her
lovely voice and winning personality was
smashing as Dorothy. Tim Dolan was funny
and rubbery as the Scarecrow. Chris Kind
was excellent as the Tinman, but that Jayson
Elliott, he stole the show as the Cowardly
Lion. I knew the lion jokes since I was ten
but he still he made me laugh like a child (da
noive). Michelle Dawson was my childhood
dream of a woman as Glinda and Nicole Tori
my childhood fear as the Wicked Witch. She
was, by the way, frightfully good (I’ll get you
and your little dog too). A spirited ensemble
under the capable direction of Richard Stafford gave an eye-popping good show for the
child in all of us to love. Jonathan Stahl’s
choreography was superb. We loved the
dancing crows during the scarecrow scene
and the excellent use of the performers in
the “Merry Old Land of Oz.” The lighting,
noise and f/x were also quite effective in
making the Wizard into a fearsome creature
before he was revealed as the kindly Ken
Jennings (pay no attention to the man
behind the curtain!). Comfort characters, a
beautiful production, those lyrics and tunes
you cannot forget and an amazing, loveable
dog in peril with a sweet child. It’s good to
be a kid again.
The Wizard of Oz runs from July 31,
2014 - September 21, 2014 and South Pacific
follows from September 25, 2014 - November
30, 2014. In addition, WBT is showcasing

Westchester Broadway Theatre awards
2014 Bob Fitzsimmons Arts Scholarship to
Stepinac Graduate. This year’s recipient, of
the Bob Fitzsimmons Scholarship is Christopher Guzman, a 2014 graduate of Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains,
NY.
His love for the theater began at the
tender age of 7 when he attended theater
summer camp at the Westchester Music Conservatory and later at the White Plains Performing Arts Center. However, it was at
Stepinac where he blossomed as an actor and
realized he wanted to pursue acting as a
career. Chris participated in all 8 Stepinac
productions during his 4 years of high school
with roles in A View from the Bridge (Rodolpho), Beauty and the Beast (Monsieur
D’Arque), Twentieth Century (George Smith),
The Phantom of the Opera (Raoul), for which
he earned the Metropolitan High School
Theater Award for Best Supporting Actor, A
Christmas Carol (Scrooge), Evita (Che) for
which he won the Metropolitan High School
Award for Best Leading Actor, making him
the first student to have won a coveted acting
Metro back to back in the 15 year history of
the Awards. His last two productions
included An Enemy of the People (Dr. Stockman) and lastly, the regional premiere of
Mary Poppins (Mr. George Banks), this last
role also earned him a nomination as Best
Leading Actor. His dedication has not only
been reflected on stage but in the classroom,
where he also excelled graduating at the top
5% of his class with a GPA of 95.2, which
earned him numerous merit awards including
the prestigious Order of the Crusaders medal
for his dedication and to the school. Chris will
be attending NYU Tisch School of the Arts this
fall and is ready to embrace with passion all
the challenges the future brings.
The Scholarship is given annually to a
college-bound senior who has excelled in the
theatre arts programs while attending
Stepinac High School. The prestigious Arts
Scholarship is named after Bob Fitzsimmons, a
graduate of Stepinac High School, who died
suddenly at the age of 37 in March of 1992.
He was the Public Relations Director of the
Westchester Broadway Theatre, as well as a
gifted actor, producer, writer and a director
of shows at WBT and at numerous theatres
throughout the County. The scholarship was
established in his name by the owners of
Westchester Broadway Theatre, Bill Stutler
and Bob Funking, the entire employee staff
of WBT, and the many friends and relatives of
Bob Fitzsimmons. Under the auspices of WBT,
Allan Gruet, (former WBT Public Relations
Director, who replaced Bobby Fitzsimmons)
and George Puello spearheaded two fundraisers. The first & most successful fundraiser was
held at WBT, the second was held at Stepinac
High School. Mr. Puello was responsible for
directing & producing the entertainment portion of the events, while Mr. Gruet handled
the ticketing for the fundraisers & the continuing administration of the self-sustaining
scholarship. Over the years, along with the
assistance of producer Bob Funking, Allan has
continued to manage the scholarship, making
it possible to present the award consistently
each year. In recent years, Frank Portanova,
Vice Principal of Stepinac High School, has
been extremely helpful and cooperative, making some financial donations to the fund to
help ensure the life of the scholarship. He also
is responsible for selecting the student winner
for this highly competitive award. Since its
inception, $22,000.00 in scholarships have
been awarded. The annual scholarship in
Bob’s name is our collective way of keeping
alive the memory of our dear friend, Bobby
Fitzsimmons.

Gardner and Fanny Church are preparing
to move out of their Beacon Hill house to
their summer cottage on Cape Cod. Gardner,
once a famous poet, now is retired. He slips in
and out of senility as his wife Fanny valiantly
tries to keep them both afloat. They have
asked their daughter, Mags, to come home
and help them move. Mags agrees, but she
really hopes to finally paint their portrait. She
is now on the verge of artistic celebrity her-
self and hopes, by painting her parents, to
come to terms with them and they with her.

will play the Churches and Kacey Morabito
Grean will portray their artist-daughter, Mags

decision that cuts deeply into the heart of
their disparate social views. Letting Go is a
bittersweet tale of a relationship gone awry,
as a young man’s ex-lover comes to visit and,
while exploring a photo album of their past
together, attempts to explain why she left
him. With veteran director, Robin Joseph and
M&M favorites Carly and Peter Lillo playing
the two sets of lovers.

TheatreWorks New Milford is proud to
premiere the hit musical comedy, Avenue Q,

Summer may be ending, but Town Players keeps the mood light and fun with its
production The Artificial Jungle Charles Ludlam, opening September 5. A zany, comedic
spoof of film noir classics such as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity, The Artificial Jungle focuses on bored,
beautiful housewife Roxanne Nurdiger
(Olivia Carr), who is tired of tending to nontalking parrots and piranhas in the pet shop
she runs with her greedy husband Chester
(Timothy Huebenthal). Enter the dubious
Zachary Slade (Brian DeToma), who upon
responding to the “help wanted” sign in the
window, manages to insinuate himself into
the family and into Roxanne’s heart. The
two of them decide to bump off Chester
and cash in on the insurance. Unfortunately
for them, Chester proves difficult to dispose
of, and with his cop pal Frankie Spinelli (Ron
Malyszka constantly nosing around and
Mother Nurdiger’s (Laurel Lettieri) antics,
things don’t go quite the way they planned.
Directed by Gene Golaszewski of
Brookfield, The Artificial Jungle also features the talents of Rosemary Howard. The
production crew includes producers Lynn
Alexander and Tracy Nashel, stage manager
Georgie Kobylanski, set builder Timothy
Huebenthal, and light and sound designer

Westchester parents who want to introduce their children to the pleasures of live
classical music can now do so for free. Friends
of Music Concerts, Inc., a non-profit organization that has been bringing the best in
chamber music to Westchester County for 60
years, now offers free tickets for students
under the age of 18. Young artists are often
part of the Friends of Music lineup, a fact that
should be especially appealing to students.
Friends of Music will present three concerts in the fall and three in the spring of
2015. The fall schedule includes:
The Brentano String Quartet, making a
welcome return to the Friends of Music stage
on Saturday, September 27, 2014 with a program that includes Mozart’s Quintet for
Strings in B-flat Major; and Mendelssohn’s
Quintet for Strings in B-flat Major. In 2012,
the Quartet’s recording of Beethoven’s late
quartet, Op. 131, was the basis of the soundtrack for the movie The Late Quartet, starring
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, and Catherine Keener.
Violinist Ale ksey Semenenko performing
on Saturday, October 18. The young Ukranian
musician, a first prize winner of the 2012
Young Concert Artists International Auditions
in New York and recipient of Friends’ fifth
Performance Award, will perform with piano
collaborator Ina Firsoza. By the end of 2014,
Semenenko will have made debuts in New
York, Washington, and Boston. As a member
of the Stolyansky Quartet, which he founded,
he has performed in Russia, Ukraine, France,
Malta, and Switzerland.
On Saturday, November 1, 2014, French
pianist, Lise de la Salle performing works by
Brahms, Debussy, and Ravel. In just a few
years, through concerts and recordings, de la
Salle has established a reputation as one of
today’s most exciting young artists. Her 2005
Bach/Liszt recording was selected as Recording of the Month by Grammaphone Magazine; her 2008 recording of Liszt’s, Prokoviev’s
and Shostakovich’s final concertos was similarly honored.
All three performances will be held at
the Kusel Auditorium at Sleepy Hollow High
School, 210 North Broadway (Route 9) in
Sleepy Hollow beginning at 8pm. Parking is

Hornsby Ferril, who wrote lovingly of the
West; Normal Dello Joio captures the spirit of
his favourite poet, Walt Whitman, in a piece
titled Song of the Open Road and lastly, Hudson Chorale’s Music Director, Michael Conley,
will debut his tribute to the poetry of Emily
Dickinson entitled This Bequest of Wings.

The Small Town Theatre Company will
produce the musical I Do! I Do! at both the
Katonah Village Library in Katonah, NY and at
The Hergenhan Center in Armonk, NY. The
cast includes Jeanne McCabe and Dick Nagle
and the director is Tom Kramer. I Do! I Do!
Written by Harvey Schmidt with book and lyrics by Tom Jones, is a story of a marriage – an
intimate and nostalgic work by Harvey
Schmidt and Tom Jones (The Fantasticks). The
show begins with Michael and Agnes on their
wedding day. Their vows behind them, they
look forward to spending the rest of their lives
together. We watch as they go through their
wedding night jitters, raise a family, and negotiate mid-life crises. Michael eventually admits
to his infidelity, and although Agnes is
angered by his actions, she forgives him and
the couple reconciles. They re-discover how
much they really need each other. Then, after
50 years of marriage, the couple leaves their
house to the next pair of newlyweds. This
touching story of two soul mates navigating
the perils of life is set to the strains of a tuneful, charming score.

JANIS IAN COMING TO RIDGEFIELD PLAYHOUSE

Janis Ian will take the stage at
The Ridgefield Playhouse on
Sunday, September 21, at 8 p.m.
An acclaimed songwriter,
singer, musician, columnist and
author, Janis Ian won her first
Grammy in 1975 for her song
“At Seventeen,” and her second
in 2013 for the category of Best
Spoken Word album for her
autobiography, Society’s Child.

Janis Ian began her mostly
stellar, sometimes stormy, professional life at the age of 12
when she wrote her first song
and was published by Broadside
Magazine. That led to her first
“real” show, at New York’s venerable Village Gate, where she
shared a stage with Tom Paxton
(with whom she recently toured
the east coast of the U.S.), Lou
Gossett Jr., Judy Collins, Phil
Ochs, and a host of other
singer-songwriters.
“At Seventeen” became her trademark
song and, along with the album
on which it debuted, Between
the Lines, it earned five
Grammy nominations and two
wins including Best Pop Female
Performance and Best Engineered Recording. The song has
since joined “Society’s Child” as
inductees in the Grammy Hall of
Fame.

experiences and, as Janis’ life
has been full and colorful, so
have her songs as evidenced by

and prolific songwriting.
